Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES., Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan.
4 Creighton, Helen. Edited with an introduction by Michael Taft and Ronald Caplan. A FOLK TALE JOURNEY THROUGH THE MARITIMES.
Wreck Cove, Cape Breton Island Breton Books 1993 1895415284 / 9781895415285 Soft Cover Very Good
249 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "These are the folk tales from Dr. Helen Creighton's life journey through the Maritime Provinces, collecting songs and ghost stories and old cures - and folk tales. Helen serves as our guide, introducing us to storytellers, setting the scene of the telling - and then she lets the person tell it as they told it to her. The feel of the kitchen and the fish shed still cling to these stories. Some are long, really miraculous folk tales - miraculous in detail and in that they managed to survive. Others are the brief riddle or the tantalizing quick-telling that a folklorist can expect along the way. Helen kept it all. And read as a whole, the reality and intensity of those smaller pieces reveals their value in among the more finished, well-told tales. (This) is a Maritime treasure." Interior - crease at bottom corner of page leaf 89/90, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - slight bump at top of spine, minor rubbing, minor soft crease at top corner of rear cover.

Vancouver Raincoast 1998 1551921987 / 9781551921983 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Harold Barkley, photograpy.
118 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "The 1960s was a decade of major transition for the National Hockey League. Bitter rivalries were the order of the day, especially between Canada's two teams, as the Leafs and the Canadiens accounted for nine of the decade's Stanley Cup winners. The league doubled in size as new teams in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Minnesota, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Oakland brought hockey to new fans throughout North America. Aging superstars like Maurice 'Rocket' Richard passed the torch to the next generation of stellar players such as Bobby Orr. Hall of Famers like Johnny Bower, Dave Keon, Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Jean Beliveau, Terry Sawchuk and Glenn Hall were at their peak. Through it all, innovative action photographer Harold Barkley was rinkside, recording for posterity the greatest moments of hockey in the sixties. To his stunning colour photographs, accomplished hockey writer Mike Leonetti adds intriguing, fact-filled captions and comments. (A) treasure trove for dedicated hockey fans as well as newcomers to the game." Previous owner's place, Christmas date and signature on free front endpaper. 14 MacKenzie, David. Foreword by Pierre Berton. ARTHUR IRWIN: A BIOGRAPHY.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 080202632X / 9780802026323 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
323 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "From 1925 to 1950 Arthur Irwin was the driving force behind the success of 'Maclean's Magazine', first as associate editor, then managing editor, and, finally, as editor. He had strong views on what it meant to be Canadian, and under his direction 'Maclean's' was moulded into 'Canada's National Magazine', mirroring the development of Canada as an independent nation in the twentieth century. In the years before the outbreak of the Second World War, he was at the centre of the Maclean company's investigation of defence contracting, or what has become known as the 'Bren Gun Scandal'. In the 1940s Irwin actively sought out writers of talent and potential and gradually added to the magazine's staff many Canadian writers who went on to distinguished careers, including Ralph Allen, Pierre Berton, Blair Fraser, and Scott Young. After leaving 'Maclean's' in 1950, Irwin was appointed film commissioner at the National Film Board, during a time when the board's survival was in doubt because of allegations of espionage and subversion. Irwin was the man called in to deal with the NFB's 'red scare', and, afterwards, he reorganized the board and moved its operations from Ottawa to Montreal. Irwin subsequently went on to a career as a diplomat: he was appointed high commissioner in Australia, and ambassador to Brazil and Mexico. In his last professional position he was publisher of an Victoria newspaper. This book, in describing a man who was profoundly representative of his times, and whose presence in major Canadian institutions was influential, captures the mood of Irwin's period and raises important questions about the roots of present-day Canadian nationalism and cultural identity." One small corner bump. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.
