160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

THE MAN WHO BROKE PURPLE: THE LIFE OF COLONEL WILLIAM F. FRIEDMAN, WHO DECIPHERED THE JAPANESE CODE IN WORLD WAR II., Clark, Ronald.
8 Clark, Ronald. THE MAN WHO BROKE PURPLE: THE LIFE OF COLONEL WILLIAM F. FRIEDMAN, WHO DECIPHERED THE JAPANESE CODE IN WORLD WAR II.
Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

13 Hamilton, Bea. SALT SPRING ISLAND.
Vancouver Mitchell Press 1969 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good- Good Signed by Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. Signed by the author on the page preceding the title page. "There is an island in British Columbia's sheltered Gulf of Georgia that is uniquely blessed of Nature and the home of generations of people of widely varied origins. There they have lived with more than the usual degree of satisfactions. Some were English and American, some American negroes coming before the slaves were emancipated, some were sailors who jumped ship, not a few were Kanakas from Hawaii. Canadians and Americans of modern times are discovering the joys of island life - but the descendants of the first settlers remain the solid core of today's population. There are salt springs that give the island its unusual name - but chief amongst the natural assets of the place is its tradition of self-sufficiency and its continuing charm of country living and neighbourliness. Bea Hamilton, who was born there of a pioneering family and has never been long away from Salt Spring, is the island's journalist, author and historian. Others today may see modern Salt Spring through different eyes. this is 'her' island, the people 'her' people and she introduces them with lively interest and much respect for what they are - Salt Spring Islanders." It is an island filled with contrasts: on its west side vast lava 'moonscapes' stretch from mountains nearly 14,000 feet high to a coast that's dotted with shimmering blue bays, in the north a remote valley with its walls richly clothed in rainforest greenery and streaked with waterfalls protects a way of life that harkens back to the 1900's, and on the ea st side Earth's most active volcano destroys famous black-sand beaches and begins to create new ones just a few miles away. This guidebook contains walks that will satisfy everyone, ranging from easy strolls to strenuous, multi-day hikes. ( I t ) c o v ers the entire island, describing 60 walking tours and trips in all the hiking areas. For each trip, Morey describes the trail, and provides information on distance, difficulty, driving instructions, and average hiking time. Many tr ip d es cr i pt io ns include Hawaiian legends or interesting tidbits about the area of the trip. 232 pp, 9 1/4" H. Illustration section on green stock at front of book, map. "An ocean-going ship built of copper-sheathed mahogany. A trans-Siberian expedition that builds gallows every 20 miles. A circumnavigator who starts his working life as an apprentice to a Scottish grocer. Of the marvels and quirks of Europe's 18th-century forays to the northwest coast, few signs remain on Canada's Pacific shores. Yet before 1792, twenty-nine voyages reached land between what is now the California-Oregon border and the Bering Sea. Each of these voyages permanently altered the balance of power among European courts - as well as setting the tone of relations between the native peoples and the 'mau mau'l ney': those who came 'floating on the water without land'. Derek Pethick captures the political significance of each voyage while conveying the important details that make the men, their failures and accomplishments, come alive: for instance, the journal entry showing how the crew of the fated second Bering expedition, marooned on a desolate northern island, still debated whether they might lighten their misery by playing cards or whether this behaviour would be at variance with the tsar's orders." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small chips, several edge tears with old tape repairs on inside top edge, light rubbing/soiling, small surface paper loss on spine, small light water stain on inside bottom edge.

228 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "(R)ecounts the global voyage, and the efforts to uncover the fate, of a hero of 18th century Pacific exploration long familiar with Australians and Europeans, but little known in North America. Count Jean Francois de Galaup, de La Perouse, (now called Laperouse) had a distinguished naval career, serving in the West Indies, Mauritius, the Indian Ocean and North America. He defeated the British off Louisbourg and captured forts York and Prince of Wales on Hudson Bay. His scientific expedition in 1785 rivaled, in popular interest, the space voyages of today. The expedition rounded Cape Horn, sailed north to Chile, Easter Island, and Hawaii, and then explored and charted the coast of today's Alaska and British Columbia. They made their way south to San Francisco before sailing across the Pacific to Macao, the Philippines, Korea and Japan. They charted the Tartary Coast and the Kamchatka Peninsula, the farthest outpost of the Russian Empire. Turning south again, they made for Botany Bay via Samoa. On March 10, 1788, the Boussole and Astrolabe headed north and disappeared. Despite several search parties, it was not until 1827 that evidence of one of the wrecks was discovered by an Irish sea captain named Peter Dillon. It was only in 1962 that Reece Discombe, an expert in underwater salvage, found the flagship. Archaeological teams from Australia, France and Vanuatu continue to probe the wrecks to this day." University of Hawaii Press, Honolulu, (1990).
354 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), soft cover. ISBN 0824813782 B&w photos, maps. "In this vivid, dual-sided account Michael Slackman examines the circumstances behind the Japanese decision to attack Pearl Harbor and the Roosevelt administration's stra tegic thought. Central to the unfolding drama is the story of military-civilian relations in Hawaii. Slackman shows clearly how the suspicion and lack of understanding with which authorities viewed Hawaii's Japanese community caused the mil i t a r y c ommand to focus on an imagined fifth column, unconsciously discounting the danger of an overseas attack by conventional military forces. His scrutiny of American efforts to locate and engage the Japanese fleet in the hours after the at ta ck , an d o f the period of martial law that followed, are important contributions to our understanding of Pearl Harbor..."
