But where could they ever find a teacher who knew so many things? Finally it was decided that the only one with so much knowledge was - a cat!....(Thoug h Barnac, Squire of Catnap,) was willing to teach the boy, he insisted that Johnny must also learn to think for himself. And so one morning, when a drop of water splashed on Johnny's book, he soon reasoned where it came from - the ceiling . A n d t h e splash of water was a tear. This tear, though Johnny did not at first realize it, was the beginning of another exciting quest. For Phoebe the Spider was crying because he had lost a treasure, the Magic Hat. And Johnny, at Barnac' s s ug ge st i on , de cided to find it. The search would put all his new knowledge and keener wits to a splendid test...." SOLO-WARGAMING., Featherstone, Donald.
9 Featherstone, Donald. SOLO-WARGAMING.
New York Frederick Warne 1973 072326063X / 9780723260639 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their efforts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that fighting one, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring two wargames armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising the pastime in some sense almost to the level of chess. It enables the 'lonely wargamer' to find pleasure rather than boredom in his solitary state." Contents: Why solo-wargaming?; 'Instant' solo-wargaming; Domestic wargaming; The press-gang; Realism through continuous combat; Concealment in solo-wargaming; Personalized wargaming; Solo-wargaming in the New World; Solo musket wargame (by John Schuster, USA); Solo-wargames campaigns; The matchbox system of solo-wargaming; The importance of War Diaries; Chance cards; Tactical cards; Regimental cards; A small spark of courage; More books for solo-wargamers; Battles by mail; Weather in wargames; Wargaming in bed; A Prince of solo-wargamers; Retasol; Setting up a realistic battlefield; Appendices: Model Soldiers - Sources of Supply; Books and Magazines; Rules for Use in Solo-Wargames; Sources of Inspiration and Instruction for the Solo-Wargamer. Very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light browning on inside, on the spine and on flap-folds, very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good-

186 pp, 11 1/4" H. Dark plum cloth with silver lettering on spine, silver illustration on front board. Pictorial endpapers, full-page colour illustrations and smaller b&w drawings by Jiri Trnka. "No book of fairy tales is complete without its magic spells, enchanted princesses and deeds of daring. But in this collection of tales from Bohemia the familiar strains of fantasy are mixed with unusual touches of the humorous and the bizarre. In these stories you will meet the old childless couple who are given a hedgehog for a son; the magic whistle which can summon birds, animals and fish; the fiddle whose music is so spellbinding that whoever hears it must dance; and a white goose which turns into a beautiful girl. You will read of the twelve brothers' adventures when they find a magic castle and meet the twelve enchanted princesses; the dog Toby who tricks the wolf, and the clever cobbler who manages to outwit the devil. There is the story of the prince who finds a greyhound and a magic pouch, and the story of a blacksmith who works hard for a strange reward. These traditional favorites of Czech and Moravian storytellers have been virtually unknown until now in this country, and their translation and retelling are done with skill and charm." Robin Brass Studio, Toronto, 2000, reprint.
312 pp, oblong 8vo (8" H x 9" D), soft cover. ISBN 1896941141 B&w drawings by the author/artist. "As a boy growing up on the Prairies in the Depression, (the author) dreamed of going to sea, became a sea cadet at HMS Undaunted in Calgary, and in 1938 joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an officer cadet, training with the Royal Navy in Britain until 1941. His wartime service began on HMS Renown in the South Atlantic, searching for the Graf Spee, and off Norway engaging the battleships Scharnh orst and Gneisenau. He lost all his possessions when Renown was damaged by shellfire. He served on HMS Matabele and HMS Hood, leaving that ship weeks before she was sunk with all hands in battle with the Bismarck. Returning to Canada in la t e 1 9 4 1 , he was appointed to HMCS Ottawa, a destroyer on convoy escort duty in the North Atlantic. A year later she was sunk with great loss of life in a battle with German submarines. Jenson was among the lucky ones plucked from the Atlant ic b y a B ri ti sh corvette. He joined HMCS Niagara as executive officer, and in late 1943 briefly commanded the corvette Long Branch before going on to the destroyer Algonquin as executive officer, taking part in raids on German ships, includi ng the T irp itz , a nd being one of the ships to open fire on the shore defences in the invasion of Normandy. Algonquin completed the war raiding German shipping and escorting Allied convoys to Murmansk. The book is illustrated with L.B. Jenson' s l umin ous lin e dr awin gs, as well as sketches and diagrams illustrating uniforms, insignia and so on. His book is a valuable record not only of how ships fought the battles of the Atlantic, but of life on board, where men had to live under d iffi cult cond ition s for week s on end - all seen through the eyes of an energetic and engaging young officer."
