"With its Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen, the French Revolution opened a whole new stage in the history of women, despite t heir conspicous absence from the playbill. The coming century would see women put in their place as never before, their subordination to men codified in all manner of new laws and rules; and yet the period would also witness the birth of fem i n i s m , the unprecedented emergence of women as a collective force in the political arena. The fourth volume in this world-acclaimed series covers the distance between these two poles. It gives us a vibrant picture of a bourgeouis century, dy na mi c an d ex p ansive, in which woman's role in the home was stressed more and more, even as the economic pressures and opportunities of the industrial revolution drew her out of the house; in which woman's growing role in the family as the cente r o f a ll mo ra ls an d virtues pressed her into public service fighting social ills...." 9 Katz, Michael B. THE PEOPLE OF HAMILTON, CANADA WEST: FAMILY AND CLASS IN A MID-NINETEENTH-CENTURY CITY.
Cambridge Harvard University Press 1975 0674661257 / 9780674661257 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
381 pp, 9 1/2" H. Tables, graphs. "(R)econstructs the social structure, life cycle, and domestic relations within a mid-nineteenth century Canadian city. (Katz's) analysis draws on the records of the entire population found on the manuscript census, assessment rolls, city directories, newspapers, and other sources. (He) has explored the relationships between inequality, ethnicity, sex, mobility, transiency, household structure, and coming-of-age during a period of profound social change. At one level, the book describes in great detail the nature of family and society in a commercial city. Simul-taneously, it uses the patterns uncovered in Hamilton, which the author compares to those other historians have found elsewhere, to speculate about broad questions in social history and social theory. Finally, the book is an exploratory exercise in the application of quantitative techniques to social history; as such its interest lies in its method as well as its substance. The author contents that two themes - structural rigidity and individual transiencey - characterized life in the commercial city. Despite the massive flow of people into and out of the city, its basic structures remained virtually unaltered, thought the identity of its occupants changed dramatically. In part, the history of the family reflected these two themes; but the family had an independent existence as well. For, despite some structural parallells, the family served somewhat different purposes than its modern counterpart, especially the sheltering of young people during a period Katz calls 'semi-autonomy', a phase of the life cycle that virtually has disappeared." Bump and tiny tear at bottom of spine - light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has heavy creasing and small tear archivally taped at bottom of spine, very light wrinkling at top edge, light rubbing and soiling on rear panel.

10 Kohn, Wendy, editor. (Moshe Safdie, Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Peter G. Rowe, Witold Rybczynski.) MOSHE SAFDIE.
London Academy Editions 1996 1854904531 / 9781854904539 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
344 pp, folio (13 1/4" H). Signed on half title page: "Moshe Safdie / March 1997". "Influenced by the diverse cultures of Canada, Israel and the USA, Moshe Safdie's architecture displays a richly evolving tectonic and spatial sensibility. During 30 years of practice, he has designed public institutions, housing and mixed-use complexes, and developed designs for both existing urban districts and entirely new citities. In this monograph more than 40 of his projects are illustrated with spectacular photography, original design sketches and text. These works include his seminal Habitat project for the Canadian Expo '67, the National Gallery of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Vancouver's Library Square in Caada; the Yad Vashem Children's Holocaust Memorial, the Restoration of the Jewish Quarter, Mamilla Center and Hebrew Union College in the city of Jerusalem; the Skirball Museum and Cultural Center in Los Angeles; and the urban designs for Montreal, Senegal, Singapore and the new city of Modi'in in Israel. Together, they demonstrate the depth of Safdie's work, and an architectural vocabulary full of light and colour. In his essay 'The Language and Medium of Architecture' and in an interview with Wendy Kohn, Moshe Safdie discusses his architecture and influences. Each of the essays, by Michael Sorkin, Paul Goldberger, Witold Rybczynski and Peter G. Rowe, covers a different facet of Safdie's architectural oeuvre." THE ROMAN NEAR EAST 31 BC - AD 337., Millar, Fergus.
11 Millar, Fergus. THE ROMAN NEAR EAST 31 BC - AD 337.
Harvard University Press, Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1993.
587 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0674778855 Maps. "From Augustus to Constantine, the Roman Empire in the Near East expanded step by step, southward to the Red Sea and eastward across the Euphrates and the Tigris. In a remarkable work of interpretive history, Fergus Millar shows us this world as it was forged into the Roman provinces of Syria, Judaea, Arabia, and Mesopotamia. His book conveys the magnificent sweep of history as well as the rich diversity of peo ples, religions, and languages that intermingled in the Roman Near East. Against this complex backdrop, Millar explores questions of cultural and religious identity and ethnicity - as aspects of daily life in the classical world and as part of the larger issues they raise. As Millar traces the advance of Roman control, he gives a lucid picture of Rome's policies and governance over its far-flung empire. He introduces us to major regions of the area and their contrasting communities, bringin g out the different strands of culture, communal identity, language and religious belief in each. (This book) makes it possible to see rabbinic Judaism, early Christianity, and eventually the origins of Islam against the matrix of societies in whic h they were formed. (His) evidence permits us to assess whether the Near East is best seen as a regional variant of Graeco-Roman culture or as in some true sense oriental. A masterful treatment of a complex period and world, distilling a vast amou nt of literacy, documentary, artistic, and archaeological evidence - always reflecting new findings - this book is sure to become the standard source for anyone interested in the Roman Empire or the history of the Near East." LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN., Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan)
12 Molinaro, Matie; McLuhan, Corinne; Toye, William - Editors. (Marshall McLuhan) LETTERS OF MARSHALL MCLUHAN.
Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405943 / 9780195405941 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
562 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "Marshall McLuahn (1911-1980) became one of the most famous men of the sixties and seventies and the involuntary founder of an unofficial cult. His reputation as a communications theorist was established by two of many books. 'The Gutenberg Galaxy: The Making of Typographic Man' (1962) explains how society and human psychology were changed when pre-literate oral culture was supplanted with the invention of the phonetic alphabet and a manuscript culture gave way to the Gutenberg era of movable type, the printing press, and mass-produced books. 'Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man' (1964), McLuhan's most widely read book, explores the electronic age and its effects on individuals and society. The letters in this collection - which in the early years provide a fascinating background to McLuhan's life and intellectual growth - are filled with discussions of ideas that altered people's understanding of many aspects of the electronic age they lived in. They reveal not only the amiability of a man who earned the friendship and respect of many outstanding people of his day, but also his staggering knowledge of the literature of the great writers and thinkers of the past and present, which inspired him to achieve his penetrating insights into his age and to become its most renowned interpreter. Collectively they furnish a readable and comprehensible gloss on the ideas that made McLuhan's name. His correspondents - distinguished scholars and colleagues, celebrated politicians, famous journalists, and stars of popular culture - range from Woody Allen to Tom Wolfe. The letters are organized in three sections, each with a period introduction: 1931-1936 takes McLuhan through the University of Manitoba and Cambridge University. 1936-1946 covers one year's teaching at the University of Wisconsin; two years at Saint Louis University; one year, with his bride, at Cambridge for work on his Ph.D.; four more years at Saint Louis; and two at Assumption College, Windsor, Ontario. This period includes many letters to Wyndham Lewis. The last section begins in 1946, when McLuhan joined the staff of St Michael's College, University of Toronto. (Two years later he began a long correspondence with Ezra Pound.) Covering the period of McLuhan's fame, it ends in September 1979 with a letter to Pierre Elliott Trudeau, written shortly before McLuhan suffered a stroke that rendered him speechless. This rich and varied collection of over 450 letters, by a man whose thought exerted a singular influence throughout the western world, is an important contribution to the cultural history of the twentieth century." DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX., Pitt, Steve.
17 Pitt, Steve. DAY OF THE FLYING FOX: THE TRUE STORY OF WORLD WAR II PILOT CHARLEY FOX.
Sandcastle / Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.
140 pp, square soft cover (8" x 8"). ISBN 9781550028089 B&w photograph. Canadian Second World War Spitfire pilot Charley Fox, now in his late eighties, has had a thrilling life, especially on July 17, 1944, in France when he spotted a black staff car, the kind usually employed to drive high-ranking Nazi Germany dignitaries. Already noted for his skill in dive bombing and strafing the enemy, Fox went in to attack the automobile. As it turned out, the car very likely contained famed G e r m a n General Erwin Rommel, the Desert Fox, and Charley is now considered by many to be the pilot who seriously wounded him. Rommel, who at the time was the Germans' key military commander in France orchestrating the Third Reich's resistance t o th e Al li e s' D-Day invasion, was never the same after that. (The author) focuses on this seminal event in Charley Fox's life and in the conduct of the war, but he also provides fascinating aspects of the period, including profiles of noted Can ad ian a ce Geo rg e 'Buzz' Beurling, famed legless British pilot Douglas Bader, and Great Escape architect Walter Floody, as well as sidebars about Hurricanes, Spitfires, Messerschmitts, Focke-Wulfs, early jets, V-1 rockets, and a whole lot more." "On January 13, 1953, the official press agency Tass announced the arrest of a group of 'killer doctors' who were systematically doing away with prominent public figures in the Soviet Union. Nine doctors, six of them Jews, were cited, and in the next few weeks many more were carted off to the dread prisons of Lubyanka and Lefortovo. Among them was Yakov Lvovich Rapoport, a distinguished pathologist; this book is a firsthand memoir of his imprisonment, revealling not only the suffering caused by a fabricated 'plot' but also the devastating climate of antisemitism and the appalling disarray of medicine and science in the Stalinist era." 237 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "She baffled and fascinated and infuriated her readers - and may others who never bothered to read her at all. When critics challenged her, she answered simply, 'Why don't you read the way I write?' Another time she said, 'I have been the creative literary mind of the century.' The amazing thing is, she was right. Gertrude Stein was perhaps the most powerful liberating force in twentieth-century literature. In her hands words took on fresh vitality; the novel, an exciting new dimension. Her books - 'Three Lives', 'Tender Buttons', 'The Making of Americans' - influenced a whole generation of writers, most famous among them Ernest Hemingway. An inspired collector, she was both friend and patron of Picasso, Matisse, Bracque. Together she and the composer Virgil Thomson made the world-famous opera 'Four Saints in Three Acts'. W.G. Rogers, a friend of many years, has written a wise and affectionate account of this extraordinary American woman, capturing the flavor of the literary and artistic world of France in the early years of the century, and - more importantly - the excitement of her own lively and inquiring mind."
