SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND., Borawski, John.
3 Borawski, John. SECURITY FOR A NEW EUROPE: THE VIENNA NEGOTIATIONS ON CONFIDENCE- AND SECURITY-BUILDING MEASURES 1989-90, AND BEYOND.
London Brassey's (UK) 1992 1857530403 / 9781857530407 First English Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
235 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "While the 'traditional' threat of East-West military confrontation appears much reduced, events in Yugoslavia have removed any complacency about the stability of the new Europe unfolding around us. New threats - territorial quarrels, nationalism, and the demise of the Soviet Union as a unitary state - require a radically new approach to European security. The creation of an effective security system will be highly dependent on the trust and co-operation between the former Warsaw Treaty Organisation countries and their new-found NATO allies. As their title suggests, the Vienna Negotiations on Confidence- and Security-Building Measures aimed to do exactly this, by fostering greater openness about military organisation and activity. John Borawski's history of the negotiations provides a detailed analysis of the issues involved, indicating the likely direction of future talks following the watershed March-July 1992 CSCE follow-up meeting in Helsinki, and highlighting their extreme relevance to the problems confronting European policy-makers today. As they continue to seek an alternative to the limited, hardware-based negotiations of the past, 'Security for a New Europe' grows in importance as a source of ideas for problems old and new." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL & CHEMICAL WARFARE. (NBC), Gander, T.J.
7 Gander, T.J. NUCLEAR, BIOLOGICAL & CHEMICAL WARFARE. (NBC)
Ian Allan, London, (1987).
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos, drawings, maps. "...explores the historical background and early development which has led to the creation of these deadly weapons of 20th century conf lict. (Gander) proceeds to examine in considerable depth, with special reference to NATO and Warsaw Pact forces, the delivery systems and hardware employed, the various forms of nuclear device, war chemicals and biological agents and their use in action. Protective measures available to the world's armed forces and methods of detection are also examined. With the aid of over 100 illustrations and line drawings, the book presents an objective overview of a subject which is frequently misrepresented by the mass-media and a seemingly universal ignorance of the plain facts. 209 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0139594388 B&w drawings. "Gerald Bull was a gifted designer of military hardware who, early in his career, seemed destined for scientific stardom. At age twenty-two he was a doctor of aerophysics, the youngest doctoral graduate of the University of Toronto. On March 22, 1990, at the age of sixty-two, he was dead; gunned down at the door of his Brussels apartment by 'a person or persons not currently known to the authorit i e s ' , a ccording to Belgian police. His murder remains unsolved, although theories abound: Iraq, another Arab nation, the C.I.A., Canada, and Israel's dreaded Mossad. During the intervening forty years, Bull did pioneering work in artillery t ec hn ol og y, le ading to a two-decade-long relationship with the U.S. Department of Defense; developed a system for launching projectiles into space using a giant cannon; became an arms manufacturer and dealer; spent time in an American federal p ris on for vo ila t ing the Arms Export Control Act and the United Nations arms embargo against South Africa; and became involved in Iraq's Project Babylon, the so-called Super Gun. This latter endeavor probably cost him his life....(This book lo oks) at Bul l's fami ly bac kground, his friends and colleagues; (attempts) to explain the technology involved in his military developments; and to show the effects of his work on events in Canada and throughout the world."
