"Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." "On December 21, 1988, a small block of plastic explosive tore apart a New York-bound Boeing 747, killing 259 passengers and crew and taking the lives of 11 residents of the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie. The world followed in horrified fascination as a tale of international terrorism, airline ineptitude, and political gamesmanship unfolded. But another story was lost among the headli nes. Making use of more than three years of research and interviews, (the authors) present the whole picture of the disaster, including the story behind this tragic event: that of the people who died and the family members - who were left to d e a l w ith the devastating aftermath of the explosion. (This) is the shocking tale of the bombing, told through the family members' personal experiences: housewives who became adroit at handling the media; a doctor who became an authority on ex pl os iv es ; a real estate saleswoman who became an expert on terrorist groups; and the many others who sacrificed careers and futures in order to reform airline security and bring the terrorists to justice. The authors trace the history of the Pan Am 10 3 b om bin g, starting with the incidents that incited terrorists to attack and culminating with the indictment of two Libyans in November of 1991." SEBASTIAN OR RULING PASSIONS., Durrell, Lawrence. Jacket art by David Gentleman.
18 Durrell, Lawrence. Jacket art by David Gentleman. SEBASTIAN OR RULING PASSIONS.
Faber and Faber, London, 1983, first edition.
202 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0571131115 "This is the fourth in Lawrence Durrell's current sequence of novels, following 'Contance', which was short-listed for the Booker Prize. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the sto r y u n f o l d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while h er p r of es si on al p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. These intertwined episodes are as full of tender insight nd el ec tri fyi ng mel odr ama as anything Mr Durrell has ever written." Two small faint soiling marks on top of textblock.
