"With its dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty, Alberta's Bow River valley has inspired generations of artists. (This book) brings together a col lection of works by local and visiting artists from 1845 to 2000 that captures the many moods of the river from its source high in the Rocky Mountains down to the city of Calgary and eastward across the open prairie. From European topographers and military artists to p ai nt e rs c om missioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from the Group of Seven to modernists and abstractionists, these pictures of the Bow valley tell us much about changing attitudes towards nature and the environment as well as the evolution of an a rti sti c c ommunity in western Canada."Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. 3 Birrell, Andrew. BENJAMIN BALTZLY. PHOTOGRAPHS & JOURNALS OF AN EXPEDITION THROUGH BRITISH COLUMBIA: 1871.
Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

London HarperCollins 1995 0261103229 / 9780261103221 First Printing Soft Cover Very Good+ J.R.R. Tolkien.
208 pp, 11" H. "J.R.R. Tolkien (1892-1973) renowned author of 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion', was an artist in pictures as well as in words. Though he often remarked that he had no talent for drawing, his art has charmed his readers and has been exhibited to large and appreciative audiences the world over. In fact, his talent was far more than he admitted, and his sense of design was natural and keen. (This book) explores Tolkien's art at length, from his childhood paintings and drawings to his final sketches. At its heart are his illustrations for his books, especially his tales of Middle-earth. Also examined are the pictures Tolkien made for his children, his expressive calligraphy, his love of decoration, and his contributions to the typography and design of his books. With 200 reproductions, many in full colour, this lavishly-produced book offers a perfect opportunity for anyone wishing to discover a largely unexplored aspect of J.R.R. Tolkien's character." Toronto Queen's Printer 1984 0774389648 / 9780774389648 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
668 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The OPP came into existence (in 1909) with a total strength of fifty-one men, of whom forty-four were constables deployed across the vast province. By the end of World War I in 1918, only twenty-six constables were still serving with the force, but returning veterans were sought for enlistment with the provincials and the force grew, assuming every-increasing responsibilities for policing the province. Liquor law enforcement during the rumrunning days of the 1920s, and the creation of a highway patrol in 1930 played major parts in the evolution of the provincial police. The story of the OPP includes tales of murder, sabotage, corruption, and political influences. There were relief expeditions to the north in the wake of devastating forest fires, and confrontations with hoboes, harvesters, and loafers. Violent crimes, jail-breaks, war services, and industrial disputes all had to be contended with, and not a few members of the provincial police were killed in the performance of their duties over the years. 'Hepburn's Private Army' and 'Drew's Gestapo' gave rise to much criticism of the provincials, and embarrassing Royal Commissions did little to enhance the image or the morale of Ontario's finest. Despite the challenges to its continued existence, the OPP has emerged today as one of the finest, best equipped, and most brilliantly led police forces in the world." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top edge..

12 Tolkien, J.R.R. Christina Scull & Wayne G. Hammond, editors. ROVERANDOM.
Boston Houghton Mifflin 1998 0395898714 / 9780395898710 Book Club Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good J.R.R. Tolkien.
106 pp, 8 3/4" H. Five illustrations by Tolkien (3 colour, 2 b&w). "To console and distract (his young son who had lost his favorite toy dog), J.R.R. Tolkien improvised a story - the story of Rover, a real dog magically transformed into a toy, who, after many fantastic adventures in search of the wizard who wronged him, at last wins back his doggy life. This charming tale, peopled by a terrible dragon and a wise old whale, by the king of the sea and the Man-in-the-Moon, was a Tolkien family favorite and went through several typewritten drafts over the years. Now, more than seventy years after it was written, the story of Rover - or, as the Man-in-the-Moon fondly called him, Roverandom - is published at last. Rich in wit and wordplay, crowded with thrilling and humorous incident, (it) will delight not only Tolkien's countless admirers but anyone who loves a rollicking yarn well told." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny wrinkle at top of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and a tiny chip at bottom of rear flap-fold - minor edge wrinkling elsewhere, soft crease at top of front flap.
