2 Bonsor, N.R.P. SOUTH ATLANTIC SEAWAY: AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF THE PASSENGER LINES AND LINERS FROM EUROPE TO BRAZIL, URUGUAY AND ARGENTINA.
Jersey, Channel Islands Brookside Publications 1983 0905824067 / 9780905824062 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
525 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "(T)he first comprehensive book devoted to the passenger lines and liners running from Europe to Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Seventy-one lines have been deemed to merit a chapter and fleet list, but it is a sad thought that only one of them, the Costa Line, is still running a multi-passenger service between the Old World and these countries of the New, and even their sailings are not very frequent. The reason, of course, is that the steamship and motorship have been eclipsed by the aeroplane. (This book) contains about 150 illustrations of ships, together with indexes of ships and lines, a chronological list of ship losses and a list of the largest ships (14,000 tons and over)." Light waviness to edges of text block, small slight bump at bottom corner of front board. Dust jacket has slight fading to spine color, minor edge wrinkling.

3 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS., Cox, Cynthia.
5 Cox, Cynthia. THE REAL FIGARO: THE EXTRAORDINARY CAREER OF CARON DE BEAUMARCHAIS.
Coward-McCann, New York, 1963, first American edition.
212 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "(A) biography of a brilliant and impudent man living in eighteenth-century France: Caron de Beaumarchais. It was a life of fantastic adventure. Inventor, secret agent, politician, c ourtier, publisher and supplier of arms to the American colonies, Beaumarchais also wrote plays. Music lovers enchanted by Mozart's 'The Marriage of Figaro" and Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville' remember that they are based on the brillian t c o m e d i e s of Beaumarchais. Born Pierre Caron in 1732, Beaumarchais was the son of a prosperous Parisian clockmaker. As a child, he was apprenticed to his father, became fairly famous in the field of watchmaking and invented several new an d c om pl ic at ed d ev ices. He soon found wider scope by buying an appointment at the Court of Louis XV, where he swiftly rose to the highest favor. The King sent him on a secret mission to Madrid, and he returned to find himself accused of for ge ry an d e mbe zzl eme nt. H e became emeshed in a series of legal actions in which he fought vigorously to maintain his honor. Louis XV, meanwhile, sent him secretly to London to stop a blackmailer from publishing scandal about the royal mist res s, Mada me d u Ba rry. Th e ne xt K ing, Louis XVI, gave him two similar missions; the first, to smother a scurrilous attempt to libel Marie-Antoinette, took him to London, Amsterdam and Vienna; the second, to recover some papers of the late K ing whi ch we re of expl osive impo rtanc e, in volved him in London with the extraordinary Chevalier d'Eon, a secret agent who, on occasion, wore female dress and was widely (but wrongly) believed to be a woman. While in England, Beaumarchais al lied him self w ith th e caus e of t he Ame rican coloni es; and when Louis XVI refused to aid the rebels openly, Beaumarchais organized a private firm to supply them with arms and munitions as well as ships, with astonishing results. Meanwhile, h is pl ay 'T he Barb er of S eville' had be en accl aimed and its sequel, 'The Marriage of Figaro', so audaciously mocked the Government that for five years the King forbade its performance. But when public readings spread its fame, and when the b an was reluc tantly l ifted, a ll Paris fought to see i t. Wh en the R evolution broke out, Beaumarchais witnessed the storming of the Bastille. In 1792 false rumors caused an hysterical mob to invade his ostentatious mansion; he escaped to a fr iend's house. Later he was arre sted, rel eased th rough inf luence of a woma n, and after further adventures he found himself a proscribed refugee in Hamburg. He returned to France in 1796 and died there three years later." A few small faint fo xing ma rks on free endpa pers, ligh t wrinklin g at top/ bottom of spine, very small dint at top edge of front board, tiny foxint marks at edges of illustration pages. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling/creasing - m ainly at top/bo ttom of spi ne and flap -folds, tin y closed t ears at bo ttom of spine and on rear hinge, minor foxing on edges of flaps. 13 Lucas, James. Foreword by the Rt Hon Sir Bernard Braine. LAST DAYS OF THE THIRD REICH: THE COLLAPSE OF NAZI GERMANY, MAY 1945.
New York William Morrow 1986 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
241 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). "Buttressed by more than 100 maps and photographs, (this) is the first account of the fall of the Third Reich and what happened to its soldiers as the nations that had been forcibly made a part of Hitler's satanic empire exacted their retribution. Here are the stories of quite ordinary people over whom there swept a destructive war and who have not forgotten those events although they occurred more than forty years ago. There are not merely the stories of what happened to the Germans - who had made the mistake of starting a war and then losing it - but also the first-person recollections of people of other nations. On the Eastern Front, the fighting had taken on a dreadful, bitter aspect early on: Three years of intensive, epic conflict in which each side had seemingly tried to outdo the other in atrocity and terror had not prepared the ground for peace and reconciliation. In Germany, propaganda predictions of the horrors and brutalities of the Red Army were to prove all too true. The brutality of the Nazis would be fully paralleled by that of the conqueror. For the governors of Hitler's empire, their families, wives and children, escape from the approaching apocalypse meant running the gauntlet of now-confident partisans on the road to safety. But fear of reprisals was not confined to the vanquished. Exiles from Russia, anti-Communists, deserters, even ex-prisoners of war, knew well what hard fate awaited them in the cold heart of Russia. This compelling account fully captures the tension, turmoil and tragedy of the last days of the Third Reich." One very tiny corner bump on rear board, very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

THE AVRO LANCASTER., Mason, Francis K.
14 Mason, Francis K. THE AVRO LANCASTER.
Aston, (Bourne End, Bucks, 1989).
437 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photos (some aerial), maps, reproductions, fold-out color cutaway. "...the most extensive chronicle of a British bomber ever undertaken - of more than half a million words - describes how the Lancaster came into being and how it fulfilled the faith placed in it by those who planned it. From the consuming belief, espoused by Trenchard between the Wars, that the heavy bomber was the raison d'etre of the R oyal Air Force, to the realisation that Britain, faced in 1936 with the likelihood of war with Germany, was still without an aircraft that could hit the enemy capital with worthwhile bombs. Thus was developed the famous trio of true heavy bombers, the Stirling, Halifax and Lancaster. And by the end of that war, the Lancaster equipped 60 out of Bomber Command's 80 heavy bomber squadrons; more than 1,3000 out of 1,850 British heavy bombers were Lancasters...the Author has made reference to all the outstanding raids undertaken in an extraordinary compendium of individual 'histories' of every Lancaster built (over 7,000 of them), and mention is made of several thousand individual crew members - separately indexed for ease of reference. Th e book contains hundreds of photographs (many from previously untapped sources) as well as maps and diagrams, and a separate Chapter - including cutaway and general arrangements drawings, executed by the Author in colour-describesthe Lancaster in considerable detail." Contents: Towards a Strategic Bombing Force; The Reluctant Transition: Farewell to Biplanes; Heavyweights - With Two Engines; Odds Too Great; The Lancaster is Born; The First Lancaster Squadrons; The Coming of the Pathfinders; No Corner of the Reich; Special People for a Special Job; The Battle of the Ruhr; The Battle of Hamburg; The Battle of Berlin; Nuremburg and Overlord; More Special Operations; In Support of the Armies; The Last Six Months; The Transition from War ; Lancasters in the Laboratory; In Other Air Forces; They Also Served; The Lancaster Described; Appendices - Deployment of Manchester and Lancaster Units; Awards of the Victoria Cross and the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal; Lancaster and Manchester Production, Allocation and Service; Lancasters with High Raid Tallies; Glossary; Bibliography. 804 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win a war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians are only now beginning to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague Chris Everitt are the first to compile the full story of this fascinating campaign in reference form. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries on the effects of the raids. Little of this material has been published previously, and never before have the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way. (It) is sure to become the standard work of reference on this extraordinary campaign." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one pade with small wrinkle at bottom edge. 3 volume set - 8 5/8" H, b&w photographs, b&w and colour maps (many fold-out). Volume I: 430 pp, fourth impression - July 1954. "(T)he story is taken from the first stirrings of rearmament in 1934 to approximately the close of 1941. It tells of pre-war plans and preparations, the leaflet raids and the 'phoney war', improvised intervention in Norway, heroic efforts by the A.A.S.F. and the Air Component in France; of the desperate days of the Battle of Britain and the struggle to master the night raider of the 'Blitz'; of the lack of success in bombing pinpoint targets in Germany and the decision to attack large industrial areas; of the growing use of aircraft against the U-boat and the surface raider; and of the whole series of campaigns in 1940-1941 for control of the Mediterranean and the Middle East." Volume II: 415 pp, second impression, April 1954. "(O)pens with an account of the early campaigns in the Far East, where the British defences in the air, like those on the ground, were far too weak to hold the sudden Japanese onslaught. The story moves back to Europe, (tracing) the growing successes of Coastal Command against the U-boat and enemy merchant shipping, then (examining) the progress of the air offensive against Germany. The great part played by the Royal Air Force in winning control of the Mediterranean and North Africa is recounted from 'Crusader' in late 1941 to the victorious conclusion at Tunis in May 1943; and consideration of the Casablanca decisions leads on to studies of the combined bomber offensive against Germany and the invasion of Sicily. Concludes with a survey of the air operations in the Italian campaign as far as the capture of Rome. Volume III: 441 pp, first edition, 1954. "(B)egins with an account of the great air attacks against Germany in the year before 'D Day', and records the highly effective work of Coastal Command against the U-boat. A study of the 'Overlord' plan then leads to a survey of the intensive air operations which did so much to liberate France and carry the Allies into Holland and Belgium. After some description of Royal Air Force help to the 'Resistance' and the vain efforts of the Germans to atone for the decline of their air force by the use of the V.1 and V.2, the advance of the Allied armies is followed up to the Rhine. British air operations over the Balkans, the last stages of the campaign in Italy, and the shattering air attacks against German oil and transport preface the end in Europe, and the story concludes with the long fight for the recovery of Burma and the final victory in the Far East." Leo Cooper, London, 1987.
184 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 085052881X B&w photographs. "The German attempt to break the morale of the British by bombing London in 1940 did not succeed, so two years later, they switched their targets to the und efended cathedral cities of Exeter, Bath, York, Canterbury and Norwich, cities marked in Karl Baedeker's famous guidebook with three stars. Hence the name by which they came to be known. This time the British were not slow to retaliate and t h e p u n ishment rained down upon the unfortunate people of Hamburg and Cologne surpassed in ferocity anything that had gone before. From now on the morale of the civil population came to be regarded as a legitimate target in the battle to bre a k th e e ne my 's will. Charles Whiting describes in detail the Baedeker raids on the cathedral cities of England and the retaliatory raids on Germany, illustrating his story with the recollections of many of those who survived the raids. He an al ys es th e per son ali ties of the Top Brass on both sides who authorized the bombings and shows how the change in attitude to indiscriminate bombing gradually came about. It is a gruesome yet fascinating story, told with all the vividness which re ade rs of Ch arle s Wh itin g's books will have come to expect." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling. Very Good+/Very Good+
