1 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

2 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

4 Hopkins, Andrea. THE BOOK OF GUINEVERE, LEGENDARY QUEEN OF CAMELOT.
Prospero 1998 0886653584 / 9780886653583 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
96 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, many b&w and colour reproductions, decorations. "The enigma of Guinevere, a beautiful and courageous queen or a disgraced adulteress, has received less attention than the achievements of King Arthur, the adventures of noble Sir Lancelot and other knights, the magic of Merlin, or the sorcery of Morgan Le Fay. A key figure in the life of Camelot, this remarkable woman is seen variously as a scholar, seductress, warrior and gentle beauty by the countless artists and writers who have depicted her. Who, then, was Guinevere? (This) is an elegant anthology of poetry and prose, literature and legend, with commentary by Arthurian scholar Andrea Hopkins, accompanied by beautiful illustrations from medieval manuscript illumination to pre-Raphaelite masterpieces. An enlightening introduction describes the contradictory traditions of Celtic oral sources and the blending of these strands by medieval writers into the complex legend we know know. Guinevere's roles - as educated scribe to the court, hapless victim of circumstances, wise counsellor, devoted wife of King Arthur, and lover of Sir Lancelot - are explored through writings through the centuries by detractors and admirers alike." Very light edge wear, Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, light fading to spine color.

THE GRAIL LEGEND., Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes.
5 Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes. THE GRAIL LEGEND.
Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Interior - one tiny corner crease, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.

7 Matthews, John. KING ARTHUR AND THE GRAIL QUEST: MYTH AND VISION FROM CELTIC TIMES TO THE PRESENT.
London Brockhampton 1998 1860198635 / 9781860198632 Hard Cover Fine Near Fine Steven Brown.
159 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps. "Two great narrative themes, which link the sacred and the secular, have been passed down to us from the Dark Ages. These are the stories of the heroic, godlike Arthur and of a mystic object of quest, the Holy Grail. John Matthews has created an easily understood survey of the origins and merging of these epic themes and stories It is a richly woven tapestry of myth and legend, and of love and desire - both sacred and profane. It covers city and temple, knights and monks, and ranges far and wide, from Camelot to Carbonek. In gathering together the strands that make up the stories, the author has examined many of the hundred or so extant texts. He has selected from these - some still untranslated and obscure - to show how the two great themes changed and developed down the centuries as they became inextricably joined. (This book) provides a fascinating survey as well as including five of the traditional stories, retold by the author. In addition, there is a full summary of all sources and an extensive bibliography."

8 Matthews, John. Foreword by Mildred Leake Day. GAWAIN: KNIGHT OF THE GODDESS. RESTORING AN ARCHETYPE.
Wellingborough Aquarian Press 1990 085030783X / 9780850307832 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
208 pp, 9 1/2" H. "Gawain was once the most important knight at Arthur's court, a shining example of all that was best in chivalry at the time. However, as the popularity of the Arthurian romances grew the character of Gawain diminished, leaving him represented as a villain rather than as Champion of the Goddess. How this transformation came about, and the reasons why, are explored here. In this deeply researched volume (Matthews) examines all the known texts relating to Gawain, beginning with early Celtic references and working through the Latin romances and the vivid stories of the Middle Ages, including the famous 'Morte d'Arthur' of Sir Thomas Malory. From these texts the author has rediscovered the original Gawain - a figure of great mythical, magical and historical importance. Gawain's many adventures and several identities are studied in detail, providing a completely fresh and exciting appraisal of the texts in question, and this works adds considerably to our understanding of the Arthurian cycle and Gawain's part in it. It also contains a thorough investigation of the actual site of the famous 'Green Chapel' and the first English translation of the fragmentary medieval text 'The Childhood of Gawain'." Minor wrinkle at top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - migrates into page margins, light remainder mark on bottom of text block, previous owner's bookplate on free front endpaper, very small printing ink stain in margin of page 169. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some light wrinkling at top edge, very light rubbing and faint line indents on rear panel.

128 pp, 9 15/16" H. Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "(T)he great tales, myths and legends of Arthur, Guinevere, Merlin, the Knights of the Round Table and the Quest for the Holy Grail have been vividly recreated in the stunning plates of modern Celtic artwork for which Courtney Davis enjoys a fully justified world reputation. With an accompanying text by Celtic writer Helena Paterson, (this book) begins by retracing Arthur's past life in a series of cameos from the ancient Arthurian saga. Then, mindful of our own New Age of self-discovery and awareness of the continuity of ancient wisdom, the text provides an in-depth analysis of the spiritual nature of Celtic traditions. The combination of superb graphic imagery and a dedicated, sympathetic commentary show how the Arthurian legends remain one of the classic voyages of discovery, symbolically depicting the human struggle for a spiritual evolution through physical deeds. It is a theme as relevant today as it ever was in the past." Light to moderate edge wear on boards, tiny bump at top corners. Dust jacket has minor edge wear, very light edge wrinkling.
