THE ART OF CHOOSING., Iyengar, Sheena.
4 Iyengar, Sheena. THE ART OF CHOOSING.
New York Twelve 2010 0446504106 / 9780446504102 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
329 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Life is full of choices. How do we make them? Choice is a powerful tool to define ourselves and mold our lives - but what do we know about the wants, motivations, biases, and influences that aid or hinder our endeavors? Columbia University professor Sheena Iyengar, a leading expert on choice, sets herself the Herculean task of helping us become better choosers. She asks fascinating questions: Is the desire for choice innate or created by culture? Why do we sometimes choose against our best interests? How much control do we really have over what we choose? Ultimately, she offers unexpected and profound answers, drawn from her award-winning discipline-spanning research. Here you'll learn about the complex relationship between choice and freedom, and why one doesn't always go with the other. You'll see that too much choice can overwhelm us, leading to unpleasant experiences, from 'TiVo guilt' over unwatched TV programs to confusion over health insurance plans. Perhaps most important, you'll discover how our choices - both mundane and momentous - are shaped by many different forces, visible and invisible. This remarkable book illuminates the joys and challenges of choosing, showing us how we build our lives, one choice at a time." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has soft wrinkling at top edge, minor rubbing.

5 Jenkins, Janette. LITTLE BONES.
London Chatto & Windus 2012 070118194X / 9780701181949 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine
282 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "It's 1899. London. A young girl is abandoned by her feckless family and finds lodging and work assisting a doctor. But Jane Stretch is no ordinary girl, and Mr Swift is no ordinary doctor - . Jane does her best to keep up with the doctor, her twisted bones throbbing, as they hurry past the markets, stage doors and side shows to appointments in certain boarding houses across town. The young actresses who live there have problems, and Mr Swift does what is required, calmly and discreetly. Grateful to her benefactor and his wife, Jane assists him and asks no questions - the desperate young women not minding that it is a cripple girl who wipes their brows. When this unlikely pair becomes involved with a rakish music hall star, Johnny Treble, it seems that Jane's spell of good fortune is not going to last. The police come knocking - how will the doctor explain the absence of his medical certificates? How will they explain their connections to Johnny Treble's sudden death? And how will Jane argue her innocence? It seems that no amount of wand waving will make their problems disappear. 'Little Bones' conjures a tawdry, tantalising, troubling world of unclear morality and conflicting sympathies - richly evocative and full of curiosities. Two people act against their consciences simply to get by, and the choices we make are called into question. Is it possible to commit abhorrent acts without being corrupted by them?"

GUILTY CREATURES: RENAISSANCE POETRY AND THE ETHICS OF AUTHORSHIP., Kezar, Dennis.
6 Kezar, Dennis. GUILTY CREATURES: RENAISSANCE POETRY AND THE ETHICS OF AUTHORSHIP.
Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2001, first edition.
268 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0195142950 "In this innovative and learned study, Dennis Kezar examines how Renaissance poets conceive the theme of killing as a specifically representational and interpretive form of v iolence. Closely reading both major poets and lesser known authors of the early modern period, Kezar explores the ethical self-consciousness and accountability that attend literary killing, paying particular attention to the ways in which t h i s r e f l ection indicates the poet's understanding of his audience. Among the many poems through which Kezar explores the concept of authorial guilt elicited by violent representation are Skelton's 'Phyllyp Sparrowe', Spencer's 'Faerie Quee n' , Sh ak e sp ea re 's 'Julius Caesar', the multi-authored 'Witch of Edmonton', and Milton's 'Samson Agonistes'. Each chapter places an incident of textual violence within the context of England's literary and social history. In each case, Keza r o ff ers an o rig ina l a cco unt of early modern depictions of violence that reflects on the poetic process and explores the ethical ramifications of literature for both author and audience. In emphasizing the social, literary, and historical cons equ ence s of 'k illi ng p oems ', t his volume further advances scholarship in historicist and speech-act theories of the early modern period. (It) also contributes a provocative chapter to the current debate on the ethics of literary commun icati on." Min or wr inkl ing a t bot tom o f spi ne. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, minor color offset on inside top of spine/flap-folds. Fine/Very Good+
