8 Beltrone, Art and Beltrone, Lee. A WARTIME LOG.
Charlottesville, Virginia Howell 1994 0943231906 / 9780943231907 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Authors.
208 pp, 9 3/4" H. Signed on front free endpaper: "Art Beltrone / Lee Beltrone". Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "With watercolors extracted from food can labels and paint brushes made from their own hair, downed World War II American airmen recreated their recollections of combat and experiences as prisoners of war in blank books provided by the Y.M.C.A. With remarkable ingenuity and creativity, prisoners used their Wartime Logs as a mental escape from the physical confinement of German prison camps. Sketches, illustrations, poetry, diary entries - all were recorded in each prisoner's log book. (This book), printed and bound in roughly the size and format of the originals, features artwork and anecdotes from more than a dozen log books kept by U.S. Army Air Force pilots and crewmen held prisoner in German camps during WWII. Adventure, boredom, laughter, horror, and courage fill these pages. (It) provides a unique look into a chapter of history that should never be forgotten and will inspire us all." Osprey, London, 1991, first edition.
128 pp, 11 7/8" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1855321491 Profuesly illustrated with colour photographs. "Built to counter the seemingly invincible Soviet MiG-25 Foxbat, the McDonnell Douglas F-15 Eagle has proven to be more than a match for any 'red' fighter interceptor for over 15 years. Carrying the all-seeing Hughes AN/APG-63 radar inside its massive radome, the interception capabilities of the Eagle have been matched only by its US Navy rival, the F-14 Tomcat. Although a large ae roplane, the Eagle is incredibly agile, with plenty of power from its twin afterburning Pratt & Whitney F-100 tubrofans. These allow a pilot to exploit the F-15 Eagle's suberb in-flight characteristics to the fullest extent. Entering frontline s q u adron service with the USAF's Tactical Air Command in late 1974, the F-15 has gone on to equip no less than six tactical fighter wings based in the USA, and one apiece in Germany and Japan. Five Air National Guard units also bolster the fron t li ne r anks with earlier version of the mighty Eagle. All USAF operators of the potent F-15 are graphically featured in this stunning volume. A chapter on the rarely illustrated Japanese Air Self-Defence Force complements the star-spangled F-1 5s ." Mi nor edge wear, small faint erasure mark at top of free front endpaper. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, some areas of light wrinkling at top edge. Very Good-/Very Good

STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY., Brewin, Andrew.
10 Brewin, Andrew. STAND ON GUARD: THE SEARCH FOR A CANADIAN DEFENCE POLICY.
McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1965, first edition.
140 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In today's nuclear era, in a world now spending roughly $120 billion annually preparing for war, all other questions fade into insignificance in comparison with the problem of preventing conflict. Yet in this race toward annihilation Canada, with a limited budget and modest military strength, could carve for herself a new, significant and perhaps decisive role, if her military and political leaders could set aside tradition-bound c o n c e p t s , concentrating instead on the unique position Canada can hold on a world scale. Penetrating to the heart of our 'defence muddle', stripping away the military jargon that surrounds military discussions, Mr. Brewin traces Canada's m il it ar y ro le s in ce the formation of NATO in 1949, shows why the United States' concept of 'massive retaliation' has lost all practical meaning, and urges Canada to divorce herself from policies which are obsolete, provocative, and meaningles s. Sp eak in g a s o ne of the political leaders whose thoughts may play a major role in shaping this country's defence policies in the future, he outlines with persuasive clarity the factors which make it imperative for Canada to abandon tactical nu clea r we apo ns a nd c onc ent rate on developing a compact, efficient, highly mobile non-nuclear fighting force capable of tackling 'brushfire wars' anywhere in the world." Slight bump at bottom of front hinge/spine, minor wrinkle at top of spin e, ti ny di nt o n bot tom o f re ar b oard. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling; light browning/foxing on flap-folds, spine and parts of panels; light rubbing; very small color scuff on rear hinge; two tiny tears - one with creases. Four volume set, 6 7/8" H. 1. The Far Kingdoms - 439 pp, 1994 1st printing, ISBN 0345380568 - "a place of bright sunlight and magic, where wine and song were always sweet, every purse was fat with gold, and every heart at ease. (It was) said to lie in the distant east, across the straits of the Narrow Sea, beyond the benighted Pepper Coast, in uncharted territory. Young, pampered Amalric Antero cared only for real places and possible dreams. But then he meet Janos Greycloak, a dashing soldier who dabbled in forbidden magic and who carried on him proof of riches and mysteries beyond imagination. And suddenly Amalric found himself setting out on the adventure of a lifetime, a daring and perilous quest through unknown lands peopled by nightmares, to seek the ultimate in fables." 2. The Warrior's Tale - 471 pp, 1995 3rd printing, ISBN 0345387341 - Captain Rali Emilie Antero came from an illustrious family of traders, wizards, and adventurers. But Rali cared little for magic, and even less for journeying. She was a soldier, captain of the elite Maranon Guard, staunch defenders of the magestic city of Orissa. But her family legacy was about to catch up with her. For the Guard's latest mission was sheer suicide: a sea-going odyssey in search of an evil master wizard - the last Archon of Lycanth - who had fled with an secret doomsday spell that could destroy all of civilization. It would be Rali's greatest challenge: a desperate pursuit, raging across the great Western Sea to the fire reefs that marked the end of the world - and beyond, to places unmarked even in legend." 3. Kingdoms of the Night - 436 pp, 1996 first printing, ISBN 0345387325 - "Ever since Amalric Antero returned from the legendary Far Kingdoms, bringing with him magic and riches, the people of Orissa believed they lived in a golden age. Even Amalric did not suspect the truth: that dark forces from another world threatened his beloved city. Then a beautiful stranger arrived claiming to be the great-granddaughter of Janos Greycloak, master-wizard and betrayer of Amalric's youth. And Amalric learned that the idyllic lands he had thought were the Far Kingdoms were not - and that the real Far Kingdoms, The Kingdoms of the Night, were all that stood between civilization and unimaginably evil powers from another world. But now the strength of the Kingdoms was flagging. Only someone with a stout heart and a legacy of magic flowing through his veins - someone like Amalric Antero - could hope to unravel the secrets of the Old Ones and lock the door between realities once and for all. And so Amalric set out, with little more than his wits and the magic of another Greycloak, to find the Kingdoms of the Night." 4. The Warrior Returns - 440 pp, 1997 1st printing, ISBN 0345413121 - "All of Orissa believed that Rali Emilie Antero, legendary warrior and sorceress extraordinaire, was dead, lost at sea during some grand adventure gone wrong. In fact, Rali was not dead, but left entombed in ice to dream for eternity - until a goddess needed her for one last quest.
