3 Horak, Jiri and Carruth, Jane. Translated by Alice Denesova. FOLK AND FAIRY TALES FROM BOHEMIA.
London Hamlyn 1973 0601071387 / 9780601071388 Hard Cover Very Good Fair Jiri Trnka.
186 pp, 11 1/4" H. Dark plum cloth with silver lettering on spine, silver illustration on front board. Pictorial endpapers, full-page colour illustrations and smaller b&w drawings by Jiri Trnka. "No book of fairy tales is complete without its magic spells, enchanted princesses and deeds of daring. But in this collection of tales from Bohemia the familiar strains of fantasy are mixed with unusual touches of the humorous and the bizarre. In these stories you will meet the old childless couple who are given a hedgehog for a son; the magic whistle which can summon birds, animals and fish; the fiddle whose music is so spellbinding that whoever hears it must dance; and a white goose which turns into a beautiful girl. You will read of the twelve brothers' adventures when they find a magic castle and meet the twelve enchanted princesses; the dog Toby who tricks the wolf, and the clever cobbler who manages to outwit the devil. There is the story of the prince who finds a greyhound and a magic pouch, and the story of a blacksmith who works hard for a strange reward. These traditional favorites of Czech and Moravian storytellers have been virtually unknown until now in this country, and their translation and retelling are done with skill and charm." Small crease/bump to bottom corner of pages 21 to 32, very light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is prive-clipped, has a few tiny dents on front panel, moderate wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - light elsewhere, several edge tears with creases, area of laminate loss at top corner of front panel at flap-fold, jacket protected in a mylar sleeve.

4 Newman, F.G. With the Sunniside Local History Society. BURNOPFIELD & THE TURNPIKE ROAD REVISITED.
Seaham, Durham The People's History 2002 1902527917 / 9781902527918 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
128 pp,9 3/8" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Burnopfield is another link in our chain of villages - including Byermoor, Marley Hill and Sunniside along the Turnpike Road - inextricably linked to the coal industry. Although best know for its famous neighbours, the coal owners Bowes & Strathmores of Gibside Estate, Burnopfield had other industries and grew into a thriving community. Arguably the 'Capital' of our villages and not just because it had the much appreciated Grand Cinema, but because there was a far larger community in bygone days which attracted a better choice of shops and always seemed to be a hive of activity. Like all of our villages now, community spirit seems to have waned, possibly due to the demise of the coal industry. This book reminds us of the gentler days when people did seen to care more for each other and pull together, even through the dreadful days of two World Wars and many other hardships." Interior - greetings notation on contents page, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear.

5 Pack, S.W.C. THE BATTLE OF MATAPAN. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
183 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "In March 1941 Britain faced the Axis powers alone. Her army was still in disarray after Dunkerque, her fleet was stretched to the uttermost. It was in this context that, 100 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece, there was fought an action in which the Italian fleet was so signally defeated that it never voluntarily offered battle again so long as the war lasted. The engagement, the first major fleet action since Jutland a quarter of a century earlier, was of historical significance for two reasons; it was the first time carrier-borne aircraft had played a vital role, and the first time that the use of radar was of preponderant importance in a large-scale fleet action. Here is an account of Matapan which, illustrated by unfamiliar action photographs, will satisfy the expert no less than it will engross the general reader." The author, Captain Pack, was present throughout the Battle in the carrier 'Formidable'. Light to moderate edge wear to boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, two previous owner's names/info./date on front pastedown, very light browning to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning on spine and edges, light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
Price: 17.50 USD

A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY, Pope, Clive Mason
7 Pope, Clive Mason A-Z OF STAFFORDSHIRE DOGS: A POTTED HISTORY
Woodbridge, Suffolk Antique Collectors' Club 1999 1851492585 / 9781851492589 Reprint Hard Cover Fine Very Good
168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made." Very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear panel, two tiny dints on front hinge.
