1 Ansell, Mike, Colonel Sir. Foreword By H.R.H. The Prince Philip. SOLDIER ON: AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY.
London Peter Davies 1973 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+ Inscribed By Author
180 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). **Inscribed on half title page: "G_____ A_____ Best wishes Mike Ansell Oct. 14th 1973". B&w plates. "In June, 1940, when Colonel Mike had just been awarded the D.S.O. and was the youngest Commanding Officer in the Army, disaster struck: he was blinded in a hail of bullets at St Valery. The way he has overcome this handicap, and other more heartbreaking losses, is the inspiring theme of this book. For Colonel Mike has never failed to 'soldier on' in the face of adversities that would have broken lesser men. Whether catching salmon on the Torridge in Devon, creating the beautiful garden at his home near Bideford, planning a new show-jumping course with his specially designed magnetic board, attending St Dunstan's reunions or sitting in his study typing this book, to everything he does Colonel Mike bring his own unique brand of enthusiasm and professionalism - just as he did before the war, when, for example, he organised the famous Trick Ride for his regiment, the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards, and show-jumped for England. Chairman of the British Show-Jumping Association and of the British Horse Society for some twenty-five years and now President of the British Equestrian Federation, he has done more than any other single man to make Britain one of the leading equestrian nations in the world, and to stimulate the ever-growing interest in riding as a competitive and leisure sport." Publishers' promotional material laid-in. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top third of both boards and on edges of text bkock, light wear at corners. Dust jacket has bee price-clipped, heavy creases at top corner of rear flap-fold, tiny foxing marks on top inside edge, some light edge wear/wrinkling, small closed tear on front hinge, small repair at top edge - archivally taped.

ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES., Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young.
8 Chandler, David, ed. (Robert Parker / Comte de Merode-Westerloo). Note on series by Peter Young. ROBERT PARKER AND COMTE DE MERODE-WESTERLOO: THE MARLBOROUGH WARS. MILITARY MEMOIRS SERIES.
Longmans, Green, London, 1968, first edition.
276 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Maps/battle plans, 2 portraits. "The War of the Spanish Succession (1701-13) holds a special place in the annals of several European armies. The protracted struggle produced a number of great cap tains - John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, Prince Eugene of Savoy and the French Marshal Villars - and their respective martial achievements still exert a strong fascination. Two of their contemporaries who throw a considerable amoun t o f l i ght on the day-to-day conduct of Marlborough's most important campaigns, with their roll-call of famous successes - Blenheim, Raimillies, Oudenarde, Malplaquet, the lines of Ne Plus Ultra - are Capt. Robert Parker of the Royal Regiment o f F oo t o f Ir eland (whose 'Memoirs', though often briefly quoted, have not been republished since they first appeared some time after his death); and the Comte de Merode-Westerloo whose 'Memoires' are hardly known outside Belgium. In almost ever y re spe ct t he y p resent striking contrasts, in birth, rank and character, and their differences are reflected in their writing. Parker, an Irishman of obscure origins, reached the relatively humble rank of Captain of Grenadiers. His whole mil it ary lif e w as int imat ely bound up with his regimental family. His feelings for Marlborough at times amount to uncritical hero-worship. From first to last he reveals himself as a highly competent professional soldier of modest and unpretenti ous cha racte r. The Com te de Merode-Westerloo, a great magnate in Flanders with a redoubtable ancestry behind him, eventually became a Field-Marshal of the Holy Roman Empire - not that he had begun the war in the Emperor's service, but in that of h is en emies. B rave to t he poi nt of folly, irascible, touchy, overbearingly arrogant, he was continually in trouble. He bore lasting grudges against the men who, he thought, had conspired to ruin his career - Marlborough and Prince Eugene . As a com mander it i s dou btful whether he possessed sufficient cool judgment to merit his appointment to posts of the highest responsiblity. Expertly edited and annotated, the relevant passages from these two memoirs provide a narrative of t his gr eat war of ext raord inary immedi acy and fascination. It will also be invaluable to students of the period." Small soiling mark on bottom of text block, light wrinkling and tiny tear at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate wear and archiva lly tape d tear a t bott om of spine, light ed ge wear/wrinkling at top of spine and top/bottom of flap-folds, slight browning, minor soiling. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG., Ferguson, Ted.
10 Ferguson, Ted. DESPERATE SIEGE: THE BATTLE OF HONG KONG.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1980 0385146949 / 9780385146944 Hard Cover Very Good Good
252 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "On Christmas Day 1941, Hong Kong, 'the Gibraltar of the Orient', crumbled under the massive onslaught of crack Japanese invasion troops. The Winnipeg Grenadiers and the Royal Rifles of Canada, ill equipped and unblooded, fought side by side with four other British Commonwealth units to defend the Crown colony. For eighteen days, the heavily outnumbered soldiers surpassed all expectations, winning lasting honour on the battlefield before being marched off to spend four and a half years in Japanese prison camps. They had endured constant air strikes, artillery barrages, vicious assaults, and hand-to-hand combat. Their heroic sacrifice is made all the more tragic when one realizes that, from the start, they were considered expendable. Base on interviews with survivors of the battle and the POW cages, (this) is a powerful tale of human courage in the face of impossible odds." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light to moderate edge wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears archivally taped, light water marks on lower inside of flap-folds, light fading to spine colour.

154 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations, music notation for "The British Grenadiers" and "The Seventh Royal Fusiliers". "After more than 280 years of turbulent history, the Royal Fusiliers look back on a career that has taken them to nearly every country in which Englishmen have fought. The Fusilier has not always been well-treated, and not always well-liked, but his achievements - and his failures - have helped to decide the course of the British nation. Over the years, in their many campaigns, the Fusiliers developed a certain way of doing things, a certain style. They formed a tradition. And this tradition, because it grew out of the fundamentals of British character and British life, still has value for the soldiers of today." Previous owner's small stamp on each of front endpapers, faint erased pencil mark on free front endpaper, very light browning to top of textblock. Dust jacket has light wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, light browning to edges, minor rubbing, old price label on front flap.

Greenhill, London, 1999.
208 pp, folio (14 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In a stunning collection of full colour plates, this superb book captures the spirit of the Imperial Guard cavalry and their role in Napoleon's battles. It fully conveys the glory of soldiers of a military era surpassing the splendour of any other.---(B)rings together, for the very first time, ninety-one colour plates by the celebrated artist Lucien Rousselot. The plates, housed in the Anne S.K. Brown Miltiary Collection, illustrate Nap oleon's key Guard cavalry units: the Dragoons (25 plates), a regiment established in 1806; the Chasseurs (27 plates), formed from Napoleon's own personal bodyguard of 'Guides'; the Polish Light Horse (25 plates), the first foreign regiment to be p a r t of the Imperial Guard; and the Grenadiers (13 plates), the most feared of all the French army's regiments. In addition there is one vivid picture of Napoleon, wearing his favourite uniform - that of the Chasseurs (frontispiece). Carefully re se ar ched by the leading French exponent of the history of uniforms, Lucien Rousselot, from primary sources, including surviving uniforms and official documents, and brilliantly executed, these paintings are the very best of their type and supe r b e xam ple s of military art.
