Buckingham Barracuda 1987 0860232921 / 9780860232926 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

Mosaic, (Oakville, 1982).
287 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
17 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous K h y b e r P a ss. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. Th is i s th e f ul l, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine."
