"World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten a re the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air cam p a i g n i n history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to creat e th e Ro ya l A ir Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in Wo rl dWa r II. 8 Moore, Lucy. AMPHIBIOUS THING: THE LIFE OF LORD HERVEY.
London Viking 2000 067087986X / 9780670879861 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
376 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). Colour plates. "Lord Hervey was one of the most controversial figures of the Georgian age. The consummate courtier - strikingly handsome, elegant and witty - he was both the favourite of the Queen and right-hand man to Walpole. Painted by Hogarth, satirized by Fielding and Pope, and confidant of Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, Hervey counted among his friends and enemies some of the most brilliant men and women of the age. Yet for all his hard-won fame, there was a scandalous private side to Hervey. He was certainly a rake (rumour had it that he shared a mistress with the Prince of Wales), but such behaviour was quite normal among the eighteenth-century aristocracy. Less usual, however, was his ten-year affair with another man. From the outset, Hervey was fascinated by Stephen Fox. His engaging, delightfully witty letters reveal the depth of their passion for one another, and the lengths to which they were driven in order to escape detection. Finally, theirs became an 'open secret', one of many factors that was to contribute to Hervey's downfall. In this entertaining and wonderfully observed biography, Lucy Moore brings to life an entire age, with its shimmering artifice and its poisonous deceit, its highly wrought melodrama and its grand passions." Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine.

HISTORY OF THE GERMAN AIR FORCE., Philpott, Bryan.
11 Philpott, Bryan. HISTORY OF THE GERMAN AIR FORCE.
Bison, London, 1986.
192 pp, 4to (12 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, colour cutaways. ISBN 0861242750 "German military aviation got off to a somewhat slow start in the years before World War I but innovative aircraft designs and brilliant pilots soon established a deadly reputation in the skies over the Western Front. The Germans were pioneers too in long-distance bombing by the naval air service's Zeppelins and the later Gotha aircraft. Despite t h e restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles at the end of World War I innovation continued, to be accelerated when Hitler came to power and the new Luftwaffe had its baptism of fire in Spain. The Luftwaffe went on to play a vital part in th e B litzkrieg campaigns of the early war years and came close to defeating Britain in 1940. The later war years were dominated in turn by the efforts to hold back the American bombers by day and the British by night. In the process the best Ger man p il ots became the most effective in the world, the leading German ace, Hartmann, scoring some 352 victories, while in the technical field Germany pioneered the use of jet aircraft. The present day East German air force is by far the best equ ippe d i n t he Warsaw Pact outside the Soviet Union, fielding such types as the MiG-23 and MiG-27. The new West German Luftwaffe has undergone some problems with its aircraft but with the introduction of the Tornado it now has the equipment to mat ch it s un doub ted operational efficiency. (This book) features Bryan Philpott's carefully researched text as well as photographs and artworks depicting the great and famous aircraft, the men who fought in them and their role in the great conflict s of ( the 2 0th) century. This unique contribution to the history of military aviation is sure to appeal to any aricraft enthusiast." Book is slightly cocked. KINGS & QUEENS OF BRITAIN., Ross, Josephine.
12 Ross, Josephine. KINGS & QUEENS OF BRITAIN.
Artus, London, 1982.
192 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1898799067 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w. "This lively account of the reigns of the kings and queens of England and Scotland is a capsule history of Britain studded with a vast va riety of facts both well-known and obscure. While it is no surprise to read in these pages that Henry VIII had a marital record unequalled in the history of the British monarchy, it is less common knowledge that not one but two kings were cr o w n e d i n England in the year 1066. American schoolchildren to this day are unlikely to be taught that George III, so reviled by the Colonists, led an exemplary family life, was a fine gardener and the first Hanoverian king to speak English wi th ou t a fo r ei gn accent. Richard the Lionheart, the twelfth century crusader-king, never learned English at all; he raised as much money as he could for the costly Crusades and was reported to have said that he would sell London itself if he co uld fi nd a nyo ne to buy it. (This book) is a treasury of such information, entertainingly written and beautifully illustrated, which also serves as a biographical dictionary of the British monarchs from the Norman Conquests to Elizabeth II. It i nclu des fa mily tr ees, tables of dates and events, and a gazetteer describing places of royal interest to visit throughout Britain." Small bump at bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, creasing and small tear archivally t aped at bo ttom of spine , co lor o n spine has faded. Very Good+/Very Good
