466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

9 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF AFRICA AND AUSTRALASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 662.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
218 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers and decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "The extent of the land and sea that (this book) covers, between the extremes of Algiers and Samoa, is immense in latitude and longitude; while in points of history it ranges from the oldest to the newest civilisation; as suggested by Karnak, or the new capital of Australia, Canbena (sic). Moreover, in accord with the general idea of these map-books, the effect of the map in illustrating history, the growth and multiplicity of peoples and cities, and the vast possibilities of unworked regions, is kept in sight throughout these pages. The record includes the wars that have passed, from Napoleon's Campain in Egypt of 1798 and General Gordon's last stand at Khartoum, to the battles of Spion Kop and Colenso, and the sieges of Ladysmith and Mafeking in the late South African War. It covers the routes of the great travellers, Mungo Park, Livingstone and Stanley; Stuart, Burke and Wills; and it touches at Vailima in order to recall Robert Louis Stevenson and his South Sea experiences, at the end of his days, as they are pictured by his Samoa book of 1892..." And as Governor General of Canada, he presided over the Confederation of the new Dominion with tact, firmness, and diplomatic daring. Now, drawn against the background of provincial political turbulence, of menacing threats by the Americans along the border, of French-English dissent, of British-American friction, and British-Canadian dispute, Elisabeth Batt has composed a definitive biographical portrait of the remarkable man who was revered for the impartial and amenable attitude he maintained in his taxing role as 'constitutional monarch' and who remained in Canada as the new Dominion's first Governor General." THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
13 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

14 Birney, Earle. DOWN THE LONG TABLE.
Toronto McClelland and Stewart 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Good- Fair
298 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). In this novel, Gordon Saunders, a Canadian professor lecturing at an American university one day finds himself "among hostile strangers. There they sat, his accusers, looking at him down the length of the table, and of half a lifetime in a room filled with the atmostphere of suspicion and hatred - the special atmosphere of Investigating Committees in the Fifties. Their questions concerned people he had known, and things he had done, in 1932 and 1933; certain people and certain things only, for their final and all-important question - his relationship, past and present, with the Communist Party." Tiny closed tear (archivally taped) at top corner of free rear endpaper, bump to top corner of boards with slight migration into adjacent few pages, slight bump at bottom corners, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny repaired tear in cloth at bottom of front hinge, small shallow bump on bottom edge of rear board, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has heavy browing on spine and flap-folds, small chips and tears, light rubbing, moderate edge wear/wrinkling, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Illustrated with political cartoons.

20 Brimelow, Peter. THE PATRIOT GAME: NATIONAL DREAMS & POLITICAL REALITIES.
Toronto Key Porter 1986 1550130013 / 9781550130010 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very tiny dent on front hinge..
