DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN., Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian.
2 Amin, Mohamed; Quraishy, Masud; Willetts, Duncan; Tetley, Brian. DEFENDERS OF PAKISTAN.
Midland Counties, (Leicester, 1988).
200 pp, 4to (12 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with color photographs. "Few nations in history came into the world so empty-handed as Pakistan. Born at the stroke of midnight on 14 August 1947, it's bounded in the east by India, in the north by China and the Soviet Union and in the west by Afghanistan and in the south-west by Iran. More recently a simmering war - perhaps the most astonishing one of all - goes on at heights of more than 20,000 feet, in the great H imalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges of northern Pakistan. On its North-West Frontier, the Afghans of the Soviet puppet-regime in Kabul raid and harass Pakistan border posts and villages in the Hindu Kush and the mountains of the famous Khyber Pass. They meet indomitable defence. Yet all it had at the start was courage - and the formidable legacy of the martial Muslims of Asia: pride, discipline, efficiency and unquenchable faith. Out of this came inspired performance. This is the full, remarkable story of the bravest of the brave...the story of how a frail young nation, born amid tumult and bloodshed, threatened on all sides, transformed itself into a major fighting machine." Faint cigarette odor. Dust jacket has mino rrubbing, light edge creasing along top edge, tiny tear and light wear at top of spine. VG+/VG

ARMISTICE 1918., Barclay, C.N., Brigadier.
4 Barclay, C.N., Brigadier. ARMISTICE 1918.
A.S. Barnes, New York, (1969).
155 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos, maps. "After more than four years of the most fearful war in the world's history, the end came almost unexpectedly, with dramatic suddenness. At five o'clock on the morning of November 11, 1918, Marshal Foch and Admiral Wemyss, representing the Allies, concluded an armistice with German civil and military representatives. There had been a general expectation that the war would last well into 1919. The author...examines the various factors that led to the earlier conclusion of the war. He analyzes conditions in the summer of 1918 following Ludendorff's massive offensive in March...also probes the plans of the Central Powers, the Allies, and the American Expeditionary Forces, emphasizing the range of disagreements on the methods by which German could be defeated. He then goes on to consider the first and second phases of the Allied offensives of August 1918, which at last cracked German resistance. Finally the Armistice itself is studied in detail. The penultimate chapter, which comments on military operations, includes the bizarre account of the Kaiser's unheralded arrival in Holland..." Tiny marks and faint ghost marks on endpapers from old tape (removed), thin ink line smudge on page 117, a few pages with soft or full corner creases, slight bubbling to front pastedown. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, some faint writing indentations on front panel, two small closed tears. VG-/VG

WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS., Burley, W.J.
8 Burley, W.J. WYCLIFFE AND THE SCHOOLGIRLS.
London Victor Gollancz 1976 0575020482 / 9780575020481 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
191 pp, 8" H. Red boards with gilt lettering on spine. "Debbie Joyce, a young cabaret singer, is found strangled. A week later, in the same city, Elaine Bennett, a nurse, is similarly murdered. Immediately the press raise the alarm that a psychopathic killer is on the loose. But Chief Superintendent Wycliffe is not convinced that this is the answer. While police precautions are greatly increased, he quietly goes his own way, probing into the possibility, however remote, that there is some logical connection - logical at least to the murderer - between the two deaths. His absorbing investigation takes him into the past of the dead women, and finally to a 'community holiday' which a group of schoolgirls spent together. And nasty little beasts some of them were, playing a cruel trick on the teacher in charge and on one of the other girls. Can this remote escapade have triggered murder in the present? And if so, why and how? And are there other murders to come? Wycliffe learns a lot about the strangeness of human nature during his exploration of the world of the schoolgirls, and the narrative builds up to a tense climax." Faint tanning to pastedowns and half of each free endpaper, two very tiny edge tears at top corner of page leaf 37/38. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has some minor edge wrinkling, minor tanning on inside of flaps and at top inside edge.

THE QUEEN'S FLIGHT: FIFTY YEARSOF ROYAL FLYING., Burns, Michael, ed. Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
9 Burns, Michael, ed. Foreword by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. THE QUEEN'S FLIGHT: FIFTY YEARSOF ROYAL FLYING.
Blandford, Poole, 1986, first edition.
160 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0713718889 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Carrying the Royal Family by air is a unique job and to do it, there is a unique flying unit. Now fifty years old, The Queen' s Flight of the Royal Air Force operates to probably the highest standards of any organisation in the world of aviation. Their bright red helicopters, Andovers and now BAe 146s are a familiar sight on Royal occasions, their punctuality and r e l i a b i l ity taken for granted. The effort which goes into maintaining those standards, and into assuring the Royal Family's safety and comfort in the air, is the fascinating subject of this fully authorised book. Behind the aircrew is the ba ck -u p te am i n Operations, the engineers, the administrative staff, the ground support for the helicopters, the stewards and the security staff - they all play their part, and they all find a place in this book. The history of the Flight (an d i nde ed of Ro yal fl yi ng, which goes back to July 1917) is also recounted both in narrative form and in cameo reminiscences from ex-members of the Flight; these include Brian Trubshaw, later Concorde's test pilot. With 150 photographs to ill ustr ate the te xt, the resu lt is a rare glimpse behind the royal scene, which will intrigue anyone with an interest in aviation." Routledge & Kegan Paul, London, 1975, first edition.
257 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0710079133 B&w illustrations. "....(a) fascinating full-length history of one of the world's most interesting and ancient musical instruments. The story begins in 3000 B.C. with the mouth-blown reed pipes, predecessor to the bagpipe. Mr Collinson looks at the history of this instrument as known in ancient Babylonia and Egypt, through the ancient Grecian Empire and Greece itself, to Rome and thence to Britain. He investigates the application of the bag principle to the mouth-blown pipes in Hellenic Egypt and Rome, and the first appearance of the bagpipe in Great Britain and Ireland in the eleventh or twelfth century. He describes the development of the bagpipe in the Br itish Isles, its rise and gradual waning, leaving the Scottish Highland bagpipe and the Northumbrian pipes as the sole survivors. Having traced its evolution, the book goes on to narrate the fortunes of the 'Great Highland Bagpipe' itself. T h i s i s an account which encompasses the Jacobite risings and Culloden, and the Disarming Act 1747, by which the use of the bagpipe was more or less proscribed. It covers the great music of Pibroch, in the hands of the MacCrimmons and other p ip er s, a n d co ntinues up to modern times. Appendices list the bagpipes of other countries and the materials used in the instrument's manufacture, and there is a comprehensive bibliography."
