THE MAN WHO BROKE PURPLE: THE LIFE OF COLONEL WILLIAM F. FRIEDMAN, WHO DECIPHERED THE JAPANESE CODE IN WORLD WAR II., Clark, Ronald.
8 Clark, Ronald. THE MAN WHO BROKE PURPLE: THE LIFE OF COLONEL WILLIAM F. FRIEDMAN, WHO DECIPHERED THE JAPANESE CODE IN WORLD WAR II.
Boston Little Brown 1977 0316145955 / 9780316145954 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
271 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "(T)ells the story of William Friedman, the master cryptographer who solved the 'unbreakable' Japanese cipher system, 'Purple', used by the Imperial navy and the Japanese embassy in Berlin. (This) is the first full-scale, authorized biography of the attractive but driven leader of the only wartime enterprise as top secret as the manufacture of the first atomic bomb. (It) provides a sober account of how America's early, scattered intelligence agencies burgeoned steadily without foresight into a modern bureaucracy characterized by pathological secrecy and ethical ambiguity - and how such expansion took a severe toll on Friendman's mental and physical health. Clark discloses how much the Purple decipherments contributed to the Allied offensive in Europe and, most of all, influenced the outcome of the war in the Pacific: how the Battle of Midway and the ambush of Yamamoto's plane over Bougainville were decided by decoded Purple messages; and how, tragically, circumstances prevented the deciphered warnings of an impending attack from being understood in time at Pearl Harbor. A thoughtful biography of a dapper figure who transformed cryptography from a remote craft 'run by guess and by God' to a complex science, (it) triumphs in its recreation of those agonizing hours when the fate of our fleet in the Pacific, and its officers and men, was determined by a handful of men with only small strips of paper sitting in a room thousands of miles away." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/creasing - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, crease down front flap at fore-edge, one small edge tear with crease, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Unpaginated, 11 1/8" H. "Envisioning the first book of the Bible like no one before him, R. Crumb, the legendary illustrator, retells the story of Genesis in a profoundly honest and deeply moving way. Originally thinking that he would do a takeoff of Adam and Eve, Crumb became so fascinated with the Bible's language, 'a text so great and so strange that it lends itself readily to graphic depictions', that he decided instead to do a literal interpretation assembled primarily from the translations of Robert Alter and the King James Version. Now readers of every persuasion - Crumb fans, comic book lovers, and believers - can gain astonishing new insights from these harrowing, tragic and even juicy stories." Profusely illustrated in b&w comic strip fashion at an "adult" level, with an Introduction and Commentary by Crumb. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top edge.

GOD'S PLOT & MAN'S STORIES: STUDIES IN THE FICTIONAL IMAGINATION FROM MILTON TO FIELDING., Damrosch, Leopold, Jr.
14 Damrosch, Leopold, Jr. GOD'S PLOT & MAN'S STORIES: STUDIES IN THE FICTIONAL IMAGINATION FROM MILTON TO FIELDING.
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1985, first edition.
343 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0226135799 "Combining literary criticsm with psychology, sociology, and the history of ideas, (this book) offers a fresh approach to the often-asserted connection between Puritanism and the rise of the English novel. Its premise is that the Christian myth, far from serving as a simple, unified background to fiction, was paradoxical and full of potential conflicts, and that these were particularly vivid in the Puritan ima g i n a t i o n . The extraordinary power of Puritan psychology rests in the control it granted Providence over the individual. Yet as a basis for fiction, Puritanism confronted a paradox that is the central theme of Damrosch's study - the tensio n be tw ee n fi ct io ns that confess themselves to be fictional and the Puritan faith in human life as a narrative invented by God....Damrosch holds that the eighteenth-century novel was preeminently a novel of ideas, not simply illustrating or al lu din g t o i de as but te sti ng them and fighting with them. As such, individual masterpieces found unique solutions to shared cultural problems. They demand to be understood from within, even while an attempt is made to trace their historical de velo pmen t. Acc ord ingl y, D amro sch examines a series of major works in detail. After surveying Puritan ideas about the self, time, and language, he considers two very different modes of Puritan narrative: Milton's 'Paradise Lost' and Bunya n's autob iogra phy and all egori es. Damro sch then explores the transition to secular narrative in eloquent discussions of Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', Richardson's 'Clarissa', and Fielding's 'Tom Jones'. A glance at Sterne's 'Tristram Shandy' co nclu des th e book , wi th re flect ions o n th e futu re of the novel in an age when providential pattern could no longer be asserted as synonymous with literary design." 1" faint line indentation on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket moderate w rinkl ing and a few tiny tears/ chips along t op ed ge, lig ht edge wear wrinkling at bottom of spine. Very Good+/Very Good-

INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER., Echlin, Kim.
17 Echlin, Kim. INANNA: FROM THE MYTHS OF ANCIENT SUMER.
Toronto Groundwood 2003 0888994966 / 9780888994967 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine Linda Wolfsgruber.
72 pp, 9 3/4" H. Decorated endpapers, colour illustrations. "Long before the Bible and the Koran, before the myths of the Greeks and Romans were set down, the people of Sumer recorded the stories of their gods and kings on cuneiform tablets. The world's oldest epic poem is the 'Epic of Gilgamesh', the tale of a hero who was part god, part man. But just in the past century a thrilling discovery was made - the four-thousand-year-old stories of his powerful sister, the goddess Inanna. Inanna is a goddess who embodies the quest for growth. Her stories tell how she develops from childish inexperiece and youthful exuberance into maturity and gains the powers to create, to destroy and to name. She is a goddess of spunk and wisdom who outwits and defies the powerful, falls in love with the shepherd Dumuzi and, like Gilgamesh, dares to seek immortality. The people of Sumer associated Inanna with the planet Venus - radiant, changeable and mysterious. They worshipped her with awe and adoration. With the guidance of Sumerian scholars, Kim Echlin has produced a moving, sensitive and knowledgeable translation of the Inanna myths. They describe an ancient goddess who was at once a great warrior, lover, nurturer, seeker of knowledge and giver of power - a figure worthy of admiration by people of any age." Very tiny bump on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling.

218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." His career took him from the shores of Hudson Bay, across the plains, and to the headwaters of the Mackenzie River. Throughout his life, he immersed himself in learning the traditions and culture of Canada's Native Peoples and ultimately became an Indian agent. At his death in 1930, he was described as 'one of the best acquainted with Indian tradition and legend in the west'. Halpin was catapulted onto the historical stage in 1885, being captured by rebel Cree and serving as a secretary/negotiator for Big Bear, the non-rebel Cree chief at the siege of Fort Pitt.
