2 Evans, A. Margaret and Barker, C.A.V. CENTURY ONE: A HISTORY OF THE ONTARIO VETERINARY ASSOCIATION, 1874-1974.
Guelph, Ontario Self-published 1976 0969069000 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
516 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w photographs. "Few people appreciate the significant contribution made by veterinarians to the economic importance of the livestock industry, the quality of small animals and the control of diseases affecting public health throughout Canada. The increasing value of such work is largely due to the efforts of the profession itself, particularly in the province of Ontario. Human survival still depends on animals and animal products. To that close relationship the veterinarian brings the benefits of modern science; his professional skill and integrity today defend the economic and physical well-being of all citizens. In a fast-flowing but detailed narrative, the authors review the early years of the O.V.A., its emphasis on high ethical and scientific standards and a long struggle for adequate statutory recognition. These advances have been closely linked to the remarkable role of the Ontario Veterinary College throughout the century. The book also traces the rise of the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association to its position of national influence. In Canada, the profession is unique in that close collaboration with all levels of government is constantly required. The control and suppression of rabies is only one example - perhaps the best know to the public." Dust jacket has tiny tear/wrinkling at top of front hinge - archivally taped, minor soiling.

Michael Glover shows how this undoubted act of bravery was exploited for political ends and why i t r e sulted in the award of more VC's than any other single action since the medal was instituted. 5 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.

7 Gough, William. (David Blackwood). THE ART OF DAVID BLACKWOOD.
Toronto McGraw-Hill Ryerson 1988 0075496801 / 9780075496809 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good David Blackwood

"(This book) is an experience as direct as a Nor'Easter, powerful as spring. It gathers together, for the first time in print, a retrospective of the major works of this gifted artist. Through the detail of the particular lives and places of his native Newfoundland, David Blackwood moves to the universal, to the pivot and that creates great art. Vibrant, vital, and the work of a master artist, (it) is also the work of a master storyteller, a narrative that has all the power and delight of this native 'New Found Land'. The prints are accompanied by a lean commentary from the novelist and poet, William Gough." A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813., Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover.
9 Hennell, George. Edited by Michael Glover. A GENTLEMAN VOLUNTEER: THE LETTERS OF GEORGE HENNELL FROM THE PENINSULAR WAR, 1812-1813.
Heinemann, London, (1979), first edition.
181 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w reproductions, maps, battle plans. "George Hennell, born about 1785 the son of a Coventry ribbon manufacturer and tradesman, joined Wellington's army in the Peninsula as a Volunteer, was commissioned in the field in the Forty-third Light Infantry, and served through the campaigns of 1812-13. Of his letters home twenty-six (all but two of them unpublished) survive, and these have been edited by the historian Michael Glover with a ge neral introduction, summaries of the events in the campaign covered by the letters, notes and appendices. The discovery of the letters represents a considerable find. Hennell is particularly good at conveying the detail of everyday life i n t h e f i e ld and camp and from his vivid pen the reader can gain a first-hand impression of what it was like to be a young officer on active service more than a century and a half ago. He is exceptional as a reporter because he not only rec ou nt s e ve nt s a s th ey happen but tries to analyse his own reactions to the dangers and horrors through which he is passing. He sometimes illustrated his letters with diagrams and fluent sketches, several of which are reproduced in this book . Hen ne ll' s s tor y beg in s d ramatically in the thick of the action when as a raw recruit armed only with a letter of introduction to General Picton he joins the British camp just two days before the bloody storming of the citadel of Badajoz. It end s w ith the vict or ious ar my d escending the Pyrenees to invade the soil of France shortly before the fall of Napoleon." Previous owners small stamp and small bookstore label on front pastedown, light edge wear and wrinkling at top/botto m o f spi ne, very lig ht we ar at co rner s. STUDENT AT THE GATES., Locke, Elsie.
11 Locke, Elsie. STUDENT AT THE GATES.
Christchurch, New Zealand Whitcoulls 1981 0723306583 / 9780723306580 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
180 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "The turbulent days in Auckland of the 1930s - the Depression riots, the specials, the jobless, the poverty, the political ferment - are the backdrop of these reminiscences by Elsie Locke. The story begins with the idyllic, tranquil life at Waiuku in the 1920s before the author began her brave struggle to put herself through university. She recounts the impact of Left-wing ideas on the intellectual community in those troubled times leading up to World War II, when hardship polarised opinion and there seemed to be only two choices - communism or fascism. Her own choice was made at this time, and she outlines the experiences which eventually led to her joining the Communist Party - an involvement which was to last more than twenty years. The Government of the day responded to the social unrest caused by the slump with measures which many saw as repressive. Many of the author's acquaintances went on to become some of (New Zealand's) best known literary names (and the) printing house of Bob Lowry was a seminal inlfuence, both political and literary, in those heady days when minds were being freed and it really seemed as if a better world could be built. Despite all this social and political ferment, opportunities for women remained severely limited. Among Elsie Locke's acquaintances were many women of flair and distinction who were not to achieve the prominence of their male peers. Threaded through this important social history is the author's own story, which in itself has the fascination of a survival narrative. How she coped is a story of pluck, independence and integrity." Slight bump at top of front hinge area, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing/soiling.
