1 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881., Beeler, John.
2 Beeler, John. BIRTH OF THE BATTLESHIP: BRITISH CAPITAL SHIP DESIGN 1870-1881.
Caxton, London, 2003, reprint.
224 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840675349 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, plans. "The 1870s and 1880s have traditionally been seen as the 'Dark Ages' of British warship design, where techn ological conservatism and a lack of any definite design policy produced a confusing mix of ship types, with armament and machinery which were outmoded before the ships were even completed. This new book, however, is a powerful refutation of t h a t v i ew, expanding the scope of its study of the ships of this period beyond the narrowly technological to reveal the full range of strategic, logistical and administrative factors which influenced warship development, arguing that it is her e th at t h e or igins of the modern battleship can be found. The author gives an insight into the difficulties faced by warship designers in an age of rapid technological change, and sets out the valid strategic and technical reasons that lay beh in d s uch se em in gly 'reactionary' policies as the fitting of sails in cruising ironclads, and the Navy's retention of muzzle-loading guns well into the 1880s. Far from having no plan, it is shown that the warship designers of this period had a v ery clea r id ea of the types of ship required to meet the range of roles the Royal Navy was called upon to fulfill in defence of a global empire, and that the problems that the ships of this period had owed more to political, financial and admi nist rati ve pr essur es tha n an y lack of competance on the part of their designers." "In 1928, the year in which Alcan began its own journey, the fledgling company's prospects were not bright, and within four years they had dimmed still further thanks to the Great Depression's deadly stranglehold. Alcan had, however, some gilt-edged assets: its employees, men and women of talent, loyalty and above all industry, led by a team cast from the same mold and headed by that brilliant entrepreneur-scholar, Edward K. Davis. (This) is the story of these people and their company. Through a blend of skill, far sightedness, luck and plain hard work they made Alcan what it is today: a world leader in the aluminum industry. From its modest birth through its precarious infancy they nurtured its growth into the giant Canadian multinational enterprise now recognized around the world, thereby realizing that dream of a a global mission which had inspired its founders." THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I., Ferguson, Niall.
7 Ferguson, Niall. THE PITY OF WAR. EXPLAINING WORLD WAR I.
Basic Books, New York, 1999, book club edition.
563 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, tables, graphs. "More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed - double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the fir st, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald. Internat i o n a l l y , more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It toppled the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth - the British - mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their li ve s, y et n on e of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of Adolf Hitler's Third Reich, and the horror of the Holocaust. Now, as the century draws to a close, the time is righ t f or a r adi cal re ass essment of the 'Great War'. In (this book, the author) explodes the myths of 1914-18. He argues that the fatal conflict between Britain and Germany was far from inevitable. It was Britain's declaration of war that needl essl y t urne d a cont inen tal conflict into a world war, and it was Britain's economic mismanagement and military inferiority that necessitated American involvement, forever altering the global balance of power. Ferguson vividly brings back to li fe on e of the semi nal c atast roph es of the century, not through a dry citation of chronological chapter and verse, but through a series of brilliant chapters that answer the key questions: Why did the war start? Why did it continue? And why did it st op? How d id th e Germ ans ma nage to kill more soldiers than they lost but still end up defeated in November 1918? Above all, why did men fight?" 9 Gagnon, Georgette and Rath, Dan. NOT WITHOUT CAUSE: DAVID PETERSON'S FALL FROM GRACE.
Toronto HarperCollins 1991 0002158426 / 9780002158428 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
408 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The stunning defeat of David Peterson's powerful Liberal government on September 6, 1990 broke many of the old rules for Canadian elections - and provided the first glimpse of how future elections will be fought. At the center of the story: Liberal leader David Peterson. Young, handsome and rich, he embodied the glory years of the 1980s when Yuppies, BMWs and image politics ruled. His decision to 'go early', to call an election only three years into his mandate, set the wheels in motion. His campaign attracts some of Canada's leading political players: campaign chair Kathy Robinson, whose pivotal position becomes a hotseat as the Liberal slide begins; former Trudeau pollster Martin Goldfarb, anxious to keep a Liberal government in power; David MacNaughton, Goldfarb critic and rival; Bob Nixon, the tough and respected treasurer faced with scuttling his balanced budget in a last-ditch vote-buying attempt; aide Vince Borg, Peterson's long-time friend, who tries to protect the premier from protesters and Liberals alike. These key players and an army of policy experts, strategists, party members, candidates and reporters tangle and clash in the race for power. (The) gripping account of how the Peterson Liberals did not anticipate or prepare for the new trends emerging in Canada's electoral process: the increasing power of special-interest groups, campaign strategies that attack incumbents without offering alternatives, negative advertising, the critical importance of perceptions and the media, an electorate with declining party allegiances and the rise of non-traditional parties. It's also the reavealing tale of how Ontario's New Democratic and Progressive Conservative parties ran campaigns that became a perfect match for the volatile mood of voters." WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?, Granatstein, J.L.
10 Granatstein, J.L. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?
Phyllis Bruce / HarperFlamingo, Toronto, 2004, first edition.
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0002006758 "With tragic helicopter crashes and out-of-date equipment, our military lurches towards irrelevance as our politicians dither. Our personnel are stretched far too thinly and are i ll-prepared for the battlefield or increasingly dangerous peacekeeping. In truth, we rank 34th among nations in the provision of UN peacekeeping troops. And since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the United States is seriously re-evaluating our abil i t y t o d efend our half of North America against terrorism. J.L. Granatstein argues that we are all too willing to hide behind anti-American sentiment, while ignoring the reality that we Canadians have failed our military. Who are the killers o f th e C an a di an army, navy and air force? Granatstein fingers a series of governments since the Second World War who have never understood our military heritage and who have drained military expenditures for years. From Pierre Trudeau to B ria n Mul ro ney to J ean Cretien, (this book) is a catalogue of prime ministers who have never supported adequate military spending. But Granatstein also places blame on ordinary Canadians who have allowed such changes to take place while cling ing to the my th t hat we are the ultimate global peacekeepers. How can we expect the men and women of the Canadian forces to risk their lives for us when we are not prepared to protect and support them in turn? Here is an articulate and impassi oned ar gumen t fo r a w ell- tra ined , well-funded military so that we can take our place among those who defend freedom in this century." 12 Herman, Arthur. TO RULE THE WAVES: HOW THE BRITISH NAVY SHAPED THE MODERN WORLD. (Inscribed)
Toronto HarperCollins 2004 0060534249 / 9780060534240 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
648 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). Inscribed by author on half-title page: To ....., thanks for your service and very best wishes, Arthur Herman. Maps. "This is the story of how the British Navy came to dominate and shape modern history. It is the story of an institution built around a tradition of heroism, in which courage in battle and bravery in death were a byword, from Nelson's death at Trafalgar to Commander Robert Scott's death in the icy wastes of Antarctica. It is also the story of a military force very different from any other, with a cast of individual personalities and intellectual eminences, from Sir Francis Drake and Captain James Cook to Charles Darwin and Sir Winston Churchill. But above all, the Royal Navy is part of the story of how one nation rose to global dominance without precedent in history and without equal, even today. The Royal Navy enabled Great Britain to build an empire on which the sun literally did not set, encompassing one-fifth of the world's population. But it also facilitated trade and communication with every other part of the planet. Thanks to its navy, the British Empire became the first truly global community, bound together by law, language, and commerce - and by the 'hearts of oak' of British ships and sailors....This is an epic journey from the age of the Reformation to the age of computer warfare and special ops: a tale of tall ships and battleships and great battles at sea; of heroic sailors, admirals, and aviators, of violent conflict and personal tragedy." 13 Laven, Mary. MISSION TO CHINA: MATTEO RICCI AND THE JESUIT ENCOUNTER WITH THE EAST.
London Faber and Faber 2011 0571225179 / 9780571225170 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
279 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w maps, colour plates. "In the sixteenth century, the vast and sophisticated empire of China lay almost entirely unknown to Western travellers. As global trade expanded, this land of reputedly boundless wealth, pale-faced women, and indecipherable tongues begn to feed the fantasies of European merchants and adventurers. The Catholic Church, meanwhile, saw in this great people millions of souls who would be damned unless the Christian message could be brought to them. Mary Laven tells the extraordinary story of the first Jesuit mission to China. Confronting enormous challenges, the Italian priest Matteo Ricci and a handful of learned companions embarked on a journey into the heart of the Empire, the fabled Forbidden City. As they became intimate with a culture that was utterly alien and strangely familiar, they clung to a belief that reason, books and science would be their chief tools in the battle to win Chinese converts. Yet the story told (here) is much more than a war of ideas. The Jesuits waged their campaigns through the senses: the smell of incense, the taste of warm rice-wine, the sound of an out-of-tune harpsichord, the gleam of a Venetian prism. The history of religion has never been so sensuous." 379 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w and colour illustrations (maps, plates). "(T)he story of the Siege of Quebec and its climax, the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. A brief bloody affair, it brought a brutal end to the Seven Years' War in North America, the first truly global conflict - and the first truly modern one - waged against civilians and cities as well as soldiers and fortifications. This is a story of strategy, generals and geopolitics - and ordinary people. A British sailor, an American irregular, a French officer, a Huron warrior, a nun who tended the wounded; their impressions, captured in letters and journals, give us a new, more human view of the battle, one often absent from the history books. By day's end September 13 (1759), Wolfe was dead and Montcalm dying, the British victorious and the French on the run. France's New World empire was finished. The battle was over, but the musket volleys fired that morning continue to echo through our world. The hardships of North America's First Nations, the birth of Canada, and the rise of the United States can all be traced to that morning's actions. Our world was created on that field 250 years ago.
