"This is the outstanding story of a Royal Air Force Volunteer Reservist who flew in the Battle of Britian and kept an exciting day-to-day diary of his experiences. Later, shot down over Northern France, he evaded capture and made his way home through Spain and Gibraltar with the help of the French Resistance Workers and the Allied escape organization. Again he wrote a vivid account of his exploits, but was unable to complete it because after a few months in the UK on fighter operations he was sent off to the Middle East in command of a squadron. There, after only a few weeks he was shot down and killed over El Alamein when leading his pilots on an operation on the evening of 17th July 1942. He was 22." They joined a multi-national expeditionary force that quickly found itself embroiled in a full-scale war. Members of the Canadian navy, airforce and infantry fought with distinction and endured months of bloody stalemate that ultimately stopped the Communists but failed to reunite the people of the Korean peninsula - with consequences that continue to haunt the world today. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
5 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
Arms and Armour, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853689113 B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carri er attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turn ed into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an a ccura te and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several palces but page signatures are holding firm ly. D ust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight color loss on rear panel. Very Good-/Good+

HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION., Coad, J.G. (Jonathan)
8 Coad, J.G. (Jonathan) HISTORIC ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL NAVY: AN INTRODUCTION.
London Victor Gollancz, London, 1983. 1983 0575032774 / 9780575032774 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
160 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w with photographs, reproductions, plans, elevations, maps. "From the 1690s to the First World War, British maritime power, though often challenged, ruled supreme. It was a key factor in the nation's commercial growth which fuelled and underpinned industrial and imperial expansion. Central to the creation and maintenance of that supremacy were the royal dockyards, and the naval hospitals. Without these there could have been no Royal Navy, and Britain's modern history would have been very different. (This book) concentrates on the period from 1700 to 1900, with particular emphasis on the dockyards built to service the sailing navy. They are rich in naval and architectural history and were industrial centres in England well before the Industrial Revolution. They go far towards explaining how it was that Britain was able to maintain and sustain one of the greatest navies the world has seen. With numerous illustrations featuring surviving buildings in Chatham, Sheerness, Portsmouth, Devonport, Harwich, Gibraltar, Minorca, Malta, Bermuda and Antigua, (it) is a fascinating and important book." Tiny corner bumps, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

9 Dezarrois, Andre, editor. Translated from the French by Philip John Stead. (Rene Mouchotte.) THE MOUCHOTTE DIARIES, 1940-1943.
London Staples Press 1956 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
221 pp, 8 3/4" H. Frontispiece. "This is the famous Rene who was transformed by three years of war from an unknown pilot of the Reserve into one of the great leaders of Free France in the air, Pierre Clostermann's hero and commanding officer. In 1940 Rene made his daring escape from Oran in an unserviceable plane seized from under the very noses of the authorities. This was a flight not away from danger, but into the thick of the Battle of Britain. He fought with the R.A.F. in Hurricanes and Spitfires, attacking enemy shipping, sweeping over France, giving air-cover to the Dieppe landing, duelling with the Luftwaffe. His exceptional courage and integrity, his powers of leadership and skill as an aerial tactician quickly won the admiration of his superiors. Rene's airborne career culminated at Biggin Hill where he commanded the fighter wing and it was he who shot down the 1,000th German plane recorded by the fighter group there shortly before his death. In the end, his greatest wish was granted, for he had written in his diary: 'If I am not to survive the war, let me at least have the satisfaction of falling to the enemy's fire'. The personal magnetism and sincerity of 'Commandant Rene' make (this) an original and valuable contribution to the literature of the war in the air." Small crease at top corner of pages 11 to 34, very light browning to free endpapers, very small light glue stain on free rear endpaper, tiny dent on fore-edge of pages 55 to 64 - tiny chip on page leaf 59/60, very light browning to top of text block, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, minor rubbing on rear board. 179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." 18 Hackforth-Jones, Gilbert. SHADOW OF THE ROCK. THE FOURTH PAUL DEXTER STORY.
London Hodder and Stoughton 1973 0340173971 / 9780340173978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Tom Wardill, jacket art.
224 pp, 8" H. "The announcement of Paul Dexter's promotion to Commander in Her Majesty's Royal Navy reached him on the first day of January 1934 after the dreariest Christmas he'd every experienced. The trouble was that after they'd given him the appointment the Navy didn't seem to be able to find anything for him to do. Eventually they sent him on a course, and it was then that he saved the life of a Rear-Admiral when their plane crashed into the sea. If he'd left him to drown life might subsequently have been easier; as it was, when he was fully recovered, young Dexter found himself posted to Gibraltar under the Rear-Admiral's command. Somebody should have warned him about Gibraltar." A series of tiny dents at top of free front endpaper (offset from front pastedown), light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, small bump at bottom corners of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear wrinkling, bump at bottom of flap-folds, very light soiling and a faint stain on rear panel, a few tiny dents on hinges.

Conway Maritime Press, London, 1988.
178 pp, small 4to (10 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. INSCRIBED AND DATED BY AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE. ISBN 0851774776 B&w photographs, maps, reproductions, drawings, colour plates. "Contrary to popular opinion, the defeat of the Armada was not the end of the Spanish Navy as a major maritime power. Indeed it underwent a real renaissance in the eighteenth century, and at the beginning of the Napoleonic Wars was the third largest navy in the world. Its ships were well designed and superbly built, and were officered by brave and dedicated professionals, who were nowhere near as ineffective in combat as often represented. This is the first English language book to look at Spanish naval forces in the century before Trafalgar, an d p r o v i des a long overdue reassessment of the aims and achievements of the service. Following a brief overview of the factors which shaped development and the main maritime events, more detailed chapters cover Spanish warship design and const ru c ti on , an d the much-maligned officer corps, concluding with sections on the battle itself and its significance to Spain....It is illustrated throughout with contemporary plans, paintings and ship models, and will prove stimulating reading for la ym an and s pec ia list alike." Very small bump at bottom of rear hinge area. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good+/Very Good+

CANADIAN SQUADRONS IN COASTAL COMMAND., Hendrie, Andrew.
20 Hendrie, Andrew. CANADIAN SQUADRONS IN COASTAL COMMAND.
St. Catharines, Ontario Vanwell 1997 1551250381 / 9781551250380 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Fine
208 pp, 10 1/4" H. B&w photographs, map. "During the war, Canadian squadrons flew hundred of operations over the North Atlantic, the English Channel, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Such operations included reconnaissance flights as well as shipping strikes to Norway, the Netherlands and the French coast. The Canadians proved themselves admirably despite heavy losses - some of the heaviest of the war. From a force of some 4,000 officers and airmen and 270 aircaft at the beginning of the war, the RCAF had within four months doubled in strength with 8,287 officers and airmen, and 14 operational squadrons in Canada. This comprehensive study covers every success achieved by Canadian squadrons listed in Coastal Command's records for World War II - including attacks on U-Boats and enemy controlled vessels. Each operation is reported in meticulous detail, from the time of departure, current weather, hours flown and crew involved to a description of the action itself."
