BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
6 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND., Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce.
7 Braz, Anatole Le. Translated by Derek Bryce. THE CELTIC LEGEND OF THE BEYOND.
Llanerch, Felinfach, 1991, reprint.
108 pp, 8vo (8 1/16" H), soft cover. ISBN 0947992065 "This unusual and fascinating book includes stories of premonitions, omens, magic books, strange rites, wakes, ghosts and exorcisms. Many of the stories are based on events which took place, in cluding personal experiences. Other stories are second hand or further removed, and the storytellers have given them an archaic and legendary quality. Many of the beliefs and customs described in this book once existed in identical or an a l o g o u s f o rm in Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and the Isle of Man, but the Celtic cult of the dead survived into modern times in its most complete form in Armorican Brittany. Anatole Le Braz assembled a vast collection of this materia l on t he s ub je c t in to a logical and coherent whole entitled 'La Legende de la Mort....' In making an abridged translation, Dr Bryce has avoided much of the repetition that occurred inthe original work." Interior - soft corner crease on fir st fe w p age s, oth erw is e cle an and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - soft corner crease on front cover, minor wear at top of spine. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY, Burland, C. A.
9 Burland, C. A. THE MAGICAL ARTS: A SHORT HISTORY
London Arthur Barker 1966 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
196 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "From the earliest time man has been fascinated by visions and dreams, and by the discovery that there were men who could, by magical powers, improve a crop or foretell the weather. As civilization grew there were demands for knowledge which would give control over other men or protection from the wiles of enemies. The study of magic and counter magic became important in the policy of states. Later magic was denounced as a work of the Devil, and then the Devil himself was demoted to become a laughing stock. Yet even nowadays there exist in the most advanced nations societies devoted to magical practices, who deal in strange rituals, and promote the interests of their membership against all enemies. A careful study shows that there is a good deal of scientific knowledge involved in the vast and complex network of 'magical' practice today. This book sets out to show some of the main lines of influence which have led to the present traditions. It treats the subject as if if were a tapestry of many strands each of which has a line of origin from which it traverses like a weft thread on the warp of universal psychological experience. This book is a short history of a complex development. It is planned as a groundwork from which the interested reader can advance to further detailed studies." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small slight bump at top corner of both boards. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small closed tears, jacket has been laminated for protection and to prevent further deterioration over the center portion (panels, spine and flap-folds).

12 Caidin, Martin S. NATURAL OR SUPERNATURAL? A CASEBOOK OF TRUE, UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES.
Chicago Contemporary Books 1993 0809238047 / 9780809238040 First Edition Soft Cover Good+
221 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "Throughout history and continuing to this day, occurrences have been reported that are so extraordinary there seem to be no possible natural explanations. Yet the credibility of the witnesses - often including thousands who have simultaneously observed the same mysterious event - and the consistency of these events across centuries of time and disparate parts of the earth indicate that they cannot be easily dismissed. (P)opular writer and aeronautics expert Martin Caidin reviews some of the most fascinating of these observations. Among the phenomena he discusses are: Careful tests by scientists showing that some people really can control objects at at distance; Reports from Vietnam combat marines of huge, glowing yellow 'semi-humans' impervious to machine-gun fire; Testimony from several different teams of Soviet cosmonauts citing encounters with 'giant angels'; Documented reports of people using divining rods to find rich deposits of ore, oil, and underground water sources that had gone undetected by scientific instruments; UFO sightings noted throughout recorded history - and their incredibly consistent similarity over three thousand years and many lands." Someone was trying to kill Peters' boss, wealthy, retired General Stantor, in a most lingering, painful, and maybe poisonous way. And Peters wanted Garrett to keep the general from becoming a ghost of himself. But Stantnor's mansion held a host of surprises for a human detective who thought he'd seen it all. For while the general was dying slowly, his employees were losing their lives at a far speedier rate. And when some of the not-long-departed tried to enlist their comrades in the growing legions of the dead, Garrett knew it was time to call in his own troops in the person of Morley Dotes, the toughest half-elf around. Morley would guard his back against whoever had decided that Garrett, too, belonged six feet underground. And meanwhile, Garrett would try to handle - or get his hands on - both the killer and the mansion's two elusive beauties - who seemed invisible to everyone but Garrett!" 222 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w drawings. "(When Kip) saw the old pioneer school on the Bay of Quinte that his parents proposed to make over for a summer home, something stirred his blood. What followed was actually the most wonderful summer he had ever experienced in all of his twelve years. It began when Kip heard there was an Indian Reserve nearby. Then he met Dan, the Indian boy, in the village general store. (This) is the story of his friendship with Dan, of his job in Mr. Mosely's greenhouse and his explor-ation of the countryside, and, above all, of the eventful canoe trip he and Dan take down the Trent Canal from Lakefield to Trenton. Their trail is strewn with adventures of all kinds, from their first camp-site when they hear the harsh voice in the dark, to the strange sounds at midnight on Spook Island, and the accident at Campbellford. The climax of the journey takes them in search of a pioneer ghost. London Viking 1991 0670821039 / 9780670821037 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
395 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)ells the story of a journey in the strange world of alleged apparitions, prophecies, miracles of healing, levitation, holy relics, weeping statues, stigmata and demonic possession. Cornwell follows the trail through Yugoslavia, Ireland, Spain, the United States, Canada, Italy and Britain, in search of proof of divine, or diabolical, intervention. He encounters the teenage Marian visionaries of Medjugorje, Sister Briege McKenna, the healing nun, and the ghostly influence of the stigmatic Padre Pio. He investigates the Shroud of Turin, the liquefaction of the blood of St Januarius in Naples, a Eucharistic miracle in the Bronx and a weeping plaque of the Virgin in Sicily. He describes a curious and sometimes sinister landscape inhabited by prophets, saints, charismatic political leaders and exorcists, and finds himself in conversation with Graham Greene, Professor A.J. Ayer and the distinguished Jesuit philosopher Father Frederick Copleston. Cornwell's journey culminates in an imaginative and original perspective that demonstrates the moral and spiritual benefits of popular mystical phenomena, while redeeming them from scientific debunking and fundamentalist literalism." Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and at bottom of front flap-fold, tiny scuff on spine, one tiny edge tear archivally taped.
