96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1855328348 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. " 'If there is no objection, I will take my Division tomorrow and go to Gettysburg.' With these words Major- General Henry Heth set in train the course of events culminating in the titanic clash around the small Pennsylvania town of Gettysburg. On 1 July two Confederate Corps swept towards this strategic crossroads as Federal troops fought a desper a t e d e l aying action. The men of the Army of Northern Virginia were the best in the Confederacy. Under Robert E. Lee they had whipped every Federal force sent against them, and they were confident this time would be no exception. As the firs t at ta c ks s we pt forward full of confidence they were met by a storm of fire. Judging from the determination of their bluecoated adversaries this was going to be no ordinary fight." "(This series) presents the military enthusiast with a new a ng le on th e m ajo r b attlefields of history. Supported by comprehensive organisation diagrams the forces involved are examined unit-by-unit, including the 'tooth' combat elements and the vital 'tail' support troops. The objectives of the operat ion ar e a nal ysed and thi s 'theory' contrasted with the realities of the battle itself." 242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. "On December 21, 1988, a small block of plastic explosive tore apart a New York-bound Boeing 747, killing 259 passengers and crew and taking the lives of 11 residents of the tiny Scottish village of Lockerbie. The world followed in horrified fascination as a tale of international terrorism, airline ineptitude, and political gamesmanship unfolded. But another story was lost among the headli nes. Making use of more than three years of research and interviews, (the authors) present the whole picture of the disaster, including the story behind this tragic event: that of the people who died and the family members - who were left to d e a l w ith the devastating aftermath of the explosion. (This) is the shocking tale of the bombing, told through the family members' personal experiences: housewives who became adroit at handling the media; a doctor who became an authority on ex pl os iv es ; a real estate saleswoman who became an expert on terrorist groups; and the many others who sacrificed careers and futures in order to reform airline security and bring the terrorists to justice. The authors trace the history of the Pan Am 10 3 b om bin g, starting with the incidents that incited terrorists to attack and culminating with the indictment of two Libyans in November of 1991." 19 Greenway, John L. THE GOLDEN HORNS: MYTHIC IMAGINATION AND THE NORDIC PAST.
Athens University of Georgia Press 1977 0820303844 / 9780820303840 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
226 pp, 9 5/16" H. "As an introduction to modern myth, (this book) masterfully encompasses a wide circle of historical and literary materials. John Greenway examines first the nature of time in the mythic consciousness, then the role of the Nordic past as a myth of origins from the Renaissance through the romantics. Only in the various forms of myth can man find identity, the author argues, and he sees the varying images of the Viking past as unconscious attempts by northern nations to legitimize their own values. Central to (his) methodology is his discussion of the sacred in language not itself sacred and the failure of modern myth to make the primitive distinction between the sacred and the profane. The author establishes the theoretical base of his discussion by examining the nature of time in mythic consciousness in terms of Norse myth. After suggesting several ways in which the mythic apprehension of reality conditioned medieval Icelandic narrative, (he) elaborates on the dialectical relationship between myth and reason, using as an example the conversion of the Germanic tribes to Christianity. Maintaining that myth is neither true nor false but always either expressive or not, Greenway traces the origin, rise, and fall of two great modern myths of northern birth: Swedish Gothicism in the seventeenth century and the Ossianic craze of the eighteenth. Both myths, one social, the other literary, illustrate the singular tension in the modern mind between mythic imperatives and the impulse to de-mythologize. Finally, 'The Golden Horns' traces the romantic belief in a 'new mythology' which synthesizes myth and reason from its early acceptance through its eventual repudiation. In his conclusions about the state of myth in the modern world, Greenway postulates that we have inherited the romantic respect for myth as truth but lack the romantic faith in transcendence necessary to establish myth's reality. We are trapped in a physical and moral world which we, as romantics, recognize to be symbolic in its representations, but we lack a belief in the transcendental reality of these symbols."
