OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
4 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

SEBASTIAN OR RULING PASSIONS., Durrell, Lawrence. Jacket art by David Gentleman.
7 Durrell, Lawrence. Jacket art by David Gentleman. SEBASTIAN OR RULING PASSIONS.
Faber and Faber, London, 1983, first edition.
202 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0571131115 "This is the fourth in Lawrence Durrell's current sequence of novels, following 'Contance', which was short-listed for the Booker Prize. What Mr Durrell calls his 'quincunx' can now b e seen emerging as an Avignon quintet, more and more recognizably linked with the themes and characters of 'The Alexandria Quartet'. In 'Sebastian' the locale is principally Geneva, picking up from the close of 'Constance', and as the sto r y u n f o l d s what were enigmas become revelations, and what seemed brilliant patchwork becomes a cunning woven tapestry. The relationship of Constance and Affad is under threat, and they realize they are heading for a fearful crisis; while h er p r of es si on al p ra ctice as a clinical psychiatrist involves her in the patient healing of an autistic child = her lover's son - and the handling of a dangerous criminal psychopath. These intertwined episodes are as full of tender insight nd el ec tri fyi ng mel odr ama as anything Mr Durrell has ever written." Two small faint soiling marks on top of textblock. 13 Holmes, John W. THE SHAPING OF PEACE: CANADA AND THE SEARCH FOR WORLD ORDER, 1943-1957. VOLUME 2.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1982 0802055419 / 9780802055415 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. "The establishment of the United Nations system at the conclusion of the Second World War was followed by a period of disillusion in the late 40s about the prospects of world order. With the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950 there came a regrouping of forces and revised calculations of what was possible. The first volume of 'The Shaping of Peace' described Canadian attitudes and policies towards international institutions as the Second World War ended. This volume is concerned with the developments in the decade after the war, with the changing Canadian concepts as they were shaped by events and challenges. Although principal attention is paid to the organs of the United Nations, other themes such as the establishment of NATO, the progress of the new Commonwealth, and the changing concepts of the North American relationship are analysed as essential elements in the Canadian search for equilibrium." THE WAR ON THE HOSPITAL SHIPS 1914-1918., McGreal, Stephen.

Barnsley Pen & Sword 2008 1844158586 / 9781844158584 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
272 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Wounded Allied personnel were invariably repatriated by hospital ships, which ran the gauntlet of mined waters and gambled on the humanity of the U-Boat commanders. For, contrary to the terms of the Geneva Convention, on occasions Germany had sunk the unarmed hospital ships under the pretence they carried reinforcement troops and ammunition. The press seized on these examples of 'Hun Barbarity', especially the drowning on non-combatant female nurses. The crises heighened following the German Government's 1 February 1917 introduction of unrestricted naval warfare. The white-painted Allied hospital ships became, in German eyes, legitimate targets for the U-Boats. As the war on the almost 100 strong fleet of hospital ships intensified the British threatened reprisals against Germany, in particular an Anglo-French bombing raid upon a German town. Undeterred the Germans stepped up their campaign sinking two hospital ships in swift succession. Seven hospital ships struck mines and a further eight were torpedoed. Faced with such a massacre of the innocents Britain decided her hospital ships, painted and brightly lit in accordance with the Geneva Convention, could no longer rely on this immunity. The vessels were repainted in drab colours, defensively armed and sailed as ambulance transports among protected convoys. Germany had successfully banished hospital ships from the high seas." Appendices: Roll of Honour; War Memorials and Cemeteries. Book is Near Fine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing.

"Since its foundation in 1839, the Geneva factory (of Patek Philippe) has determined the appearance of each type of watch popular at the time, from pocket watches to table clocks and wrist watches. Countless patents have been developed there in order to substantially improve the reliability and precision of their timepieces. At international auctions, their individual models have always been amongst the most highly prized and sought after by collectors. This volume presents an important private collection with timepieces dating from 1923 to 1981. The exclusive focus of attention is on the most interesting chapter in the history of Patek Philippe's development: the so-called complicated wrist watches whose development was made possible by the firm's winding mechanism, patented in 1861. The various models are classified according to type of watch and date of production, and are accompanied by the essential technical data together with lavish use of illustrations." 501 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "For John Watson, / with my very best wishes, / Peter Oliver". "As premier of Ontario from 1923 to 1930, G. Howard Ferguson was the most successful, the most colourful, and perhaps the ablest of Canadian politicians of his time. Largely as a result of his leadership, the Ontario Tories emerged from the debacle of their 1919 defeat to eliminate virtually all political opposition - and launch the Conservative dynasty in Ontario. Peter Oliver's study of Ferguson's life and times provides both a revealing picture of a political professional of driving ambition and rare talent and a commentary on a largely rural society dealing with the challenges of industrialization and urbanization."
