THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES., Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks.
3 Brander, Michael. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE 10th ROYAL HUSSARS (PRINCE OF WALES'S OWN). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Leo Cooper, London, 1969, first edition.
137 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Brigadier Humphrey Gore, who raised the 10th Dragoons in 1715, and General Sir David Dawney, Colonel in 1969, each had a son in the regiment, as also did many of t he Colonels between them, including King Edward VII, for such close family relationships at all levels were a feature in the Tenth, with the same names appearing generation after generation. Hence in a very intimate way the regiment has al w a y s b e e n 'Proud of Their Man'. The Tenth has also always been notable for the Cavalry Spirit, that elusive quality, which has nothing to do with horses, implying light-hearted dash and daring, pride in discipline combined with independence o f mi nd an d ju dg ement, the ability to assess odds quickly and take instant and correct decisions, enduring courage and leadership. It was noticeable before Warburg in 1760 in Major Davenport's letters. It was there before they became the Pr inc e of Wal e s's O wn Hus sars and the smartest regiment in the British Army. It was there at Waterloo, when they led the decisive charge of the day, and right down through the years and the campaigns it has always been evident. Whether in intr oduc in g p olo to Eng lan d, or d eveloping new tactics in battle, the Tenth was always in the lead. In the Boer War, when they exchanged gay uniforms for khaki, in the 14-18 War, when they fought amost entirely dismounted, in the 39-45 War, when they ha d co nver ted to t anks , a nd th rough every change of role since, these qualities remained unaltered, epitomised in the regimental saying 'Once a Tenth Hussar, always a Tenth Hussar', and in their pride as 'The Shiners', outshining all others ." Inclu des t he m usic f or th e Re giment al March Past. Faint cigarette odor, minor browning to pages, book is slightly cocked, light browning to edges of textblock, two tiny corner creases, light wrinkling ast top/bottom of spine. 5 Broome, Jack, Captain. SERVICES WRENDERED.
London William Kimber 1974 0718303733 / 9780718303730 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 8 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with cartoons in black, white, blue and red. "Records of World War II are incomplete without a tribute to the 'Fighting Services Title-Abbreviating Department', and the inspired minds therein which christened the Women's Royal Naval Service the WRENS. Surely the dedicated brood - such invaluable handmaidens to Britannia in her wave-ruling activities - owes something to such a delightful title. Captain Jack Broome also feels indebted to the Department for enabling him to call his gay, witty book of illustrated verses about these fledglings 'Services Wrendered'. In their many roles, in dockyards, on parade grounds, driving cars, teleprinters, or motor-boats with such enthusiasm and apparent awe for naval tradition, gold braid and authority, there remained that beautifully balanced, built-in, not-so-subservient subservience." Previous owner's name on free front endpaper and on title page, slight colour fading to top edge of boards and bottom edge of spine, minor wrinkles at top of spine. Dust jacket has slight browning at edges, minor edgewear/rubbing.

LOVE AND THE SPANISH., Epton, Nina.
9 Epton, Nina. LOVE AND THE SPANISH.
London Cassell 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- B.S. Biro, dust jacket illustration.
216 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Spain is a country of Magdalenes and repentant Don Juans as well as of gay sinners. This sums up concisely and colourfully - as far as love can ever be summed up - what must be considered as the Spanish attitude to love both in the past and indeed at the present time, for it has changed remarkably little over the centuries, and only now has enlightened thought to some extent begun to free love from strangling conventions and taboos. This country has produced Don Juan the greatest lover of all time, one of the most passionate and violent of all love stories in 'Carmen', the Inquisition with its scenes of extreme punishment and tortured flesh, the charming court-ship rites like the Fiesta de San Antonio, and the tragic genius of Lorca, preoccupied with beauty and death. How is it possible to reconcile the passionate guitar-playing majo with the cold, unyielding figure of the Inquisitor? Miss Epton gives us the answer - no easy achievement, for the Spaniards have never been inclined to communicate personal feelings about love either in their art or in their literature, and this reticence and pride still persists. She has met every type of Spaniard, from intellectuals to prostitutes, from students to doctors, and she has questioned them tactfully but ruthlessly. As a result, she has laid bare the myth of Romantic Spain, revealing the fundamental difference between Galicia, more tolerant of human weakness, and the severer South, which is one of the most striking character-istics of love in Spain." Light fading to top/bottom edges of spine. Dust jacket has some very light edge wrinkling, light browning on spine and very light on flap-folds, very light soiling on rear panel.

361 pp, 12mo (7 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "Here will be found famous passages of martial literature, but in the main this book goes to diaries, dispatches, recollections and reflections little known or out of print. It is both an antholo gy for the general reader to dip into and a companion to historical studies. Gay and grumbling, high-flown and understated, dramatic and humdrum, comic and tragic, these pieces illustrate the British temper in war - a business unpremeditate d a n d o f ten bungled at the beginning, conducted prodigally and doggedly but without neurosis, and then finished and done with. They start with the brilliant switch from the Meuse to the Danube which confounded the Europe of 1704 and end with Ko r ea w he r e ag ain the world has seen the characteristic stubborness without display of ruthlessness or heroics..." 15 Hunter, Martin. STILL HUNTING: A MEMOIR.
Toronto ECW Press 2013 1770411267 / 9781770411265 First Edition Soft Cover Fine Richard Williams, cover art. Inscribed By Author
260 pp, 8 3/4" H. Inscribed on title page: "To L___ / Martin June 18, 2013". "Picking up where 'Young Hunting' left off, Martin Hunter's second memoir explores Toronto in the 1960s as he marries his high school sweetheart, goes to work for the family paper company, fathers three children, and settles into a bourgeois lifestyle. But things don't stay settled for long. His flamboyant brother-in-law moves in with his gay lover, and peace, love, and experimentation arrive in Rosedale with wild parties. Hunter writes a play about Toronto's changing social dynamic that's considered racy but wins an award. The University of Toronto offers him a position as playwright-in-residence, and there he consorts with the likes of Robertson Davies and Marshall McLuhan. 'Still Hunting' takes readers on Hunter's adventures in Europe and the Middle East, reveals his stories of working in the theatre, and shares tales of his spirited friends, colleagues, and loved ones. From Greek shipping tycoons to up-and-coming actors to the Maharaja of Jaipur and filmmaker James Ivory, this memoir of a life well lived is full of unforgettable characters - chief among them Martin Hunter." 16 Innes, Michael. THE GAY PHOENIX.
London Gollancz 1976 0575021454 / 9780575021457 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8" H). "A small yacht adrift in mid-Pacific, its main-mast snapped, its navigator dead - that's the highly intriguing (and most uncharacteristic) opening of Michael Innes's latest story. The dead man is Charles Povey, a maverick tycoon. And there's a survivor on board: his brother Arthur, who, when at last he is picked up, semi-delirious, is assumed for several convincing reasons to be Charles himself. As Charles was the wealthy brother, Arthur is very ready to accept the error in identification. He proceeds to enjoy the fleshpots. But of course he also has to have a shot at running Charles's confused financial empire. And, not surprisingly, there are one or two people who see through the impersonation, and make their blackmailing demands. Arthur is driven to marriage, crime, attempted murder and desperation. Unhappily for Arthur, he buys a country estate which makes him a neighbour of that greatest of detectives, Sir John Appleby, sometime head of Scotland Yard. Appleby is in retirement now, but he cannot resist a mystery almost on his own doorstep, and he is soon investigating." afew tiny foxing marks on top of textblock, tiny bump at top of rear hinge. 17 Isherwood, Christopher. A SINGLE MAN.
London Methuen 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Cover art by Don Bachardy.
158 pp, 8vo (8 1/8" H). "(The subject of this novel) is the consciousness of one man, during one day in 1962, in and around Los Angeles. George, the 'single man' of the title, a middle-aged professor of English, has every reason to live in the past, but even the memory of his friend, Jim, killed in a car crash, does not prevent him from resolutely living in the present. From the first moment of waking consciousness the novel fans out over the day, taking in a hilariously funny lecture on a Huxley novel, and culminating in an unexpected meeting with Kenny, one of his students, in a bar on the seafront. Mr Isherwood has never been so mercilessly frank as here - though the frankness is tempered by his usual wit and compassion." Tiny dent in top margin of page 7, very light browning to edges of text block, two tiny dents on bottom edge of front board. Dust jacket has publisher's clip across bottom of front flap and printed "Price 16s net in U.K. only", both flaps have the extended white areas that appear on some copies (see scan), light browning to spine and top edge of rear panel, some horizontal puckers/wrinkles in the publisher applied laminate, very minor edge wear/wrinkling.
