Toronto Coach House Press 1978 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Benjamin Baltzly, photographer.
159 pp, oblong (9" H x 10 3/4" D). Illustrated with 71 of Baltzly's magnificent b&w photographs, plus a folded map (on thin tissue paper) - "Detail of map of British Columbia drawn by Joseph Trutch, 1871". "(B)rings together for the first time the photographs and journal of Benjamin Baltzly from his trip through British Columbia in 1871. Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. The photographs are probably the earliest taken of the rugged British Columbia interior." Two very small ink smudges on title page, tiny ink mark at bottom edge of rear pastedown. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, light wrinkle at bottom of spine and tiny tear at nottom of rear hinge.

"Formed as heavy cavalry for Cromwell's spartan army (The Blues) have soldiered with the same steady qualities for over three centuries. For the c harge of a squadron of the Royal Horse Guards is no light thing: at Dettingen and Warburg, Waterloo and Tel-el-Kebir, many an enemy fell to the heavy cavalry swords. Sir Garnet Wolsely once asked a badly wounded trooper of The Blues what h a d h a p p e n ed to his assailant. 'I cut him in two, Sir,' was the immediate reply. The Blues fought on foot at Abu Klea, where their action in closing the square saved the column but cost them their colonel; used machine guns to deadly effect i n t he G re at W ar ; were the first troops into Brussels in 1944 (something of a race, one leading armoured car was commanded by a steeplechaser, another by a Master of Foxhounds); and even resorted to donkeys in Cyprus. Amalgamated with The Roy al D rag oon s i n M arc h 1 969 The Blues and Royals, as the new Regiment is now known, may still be seen on ceremonial duties outside Whitehall; it would be wise, however, not to forget their fighting record."
