1 Black, M.H. Foreword by Geoffrey Cass. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, 1584-1984.
Cambridge Cambridge University Press 1984 0521264731 / 9780521264730 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
343 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "In 1984 the Press celebrates four hundred years of continuous printing and publishing, and this history gives a readable and not-too-formal introduction to that unique record. It is the story of the development of the printing and publishing arm of the University of Cambridge, from the medieval system of resident stationers who dealt in manuscripts to the present large printing and publishing house which produces computer software and audio cassette tapes as well as books (mostly now computer-set). The narrative is given its proper setting in the development of the University, which has inevitably determined the history of the Press itself; in the history of the book trade as a whole; and in the intellectual and political history of England which has at times affected the fortunes of the Press. There are anecdotes about powerful personalities, from Richard Bentley to Stanley Morison, which give colour and life to the sober black-and-white history of printing and publishing." Previous owner's name label tipped-in on half-title page, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, some light browning on spine, small ghost sticker mark on rear flap.

2 Campbell, Donald. With Alan W. Mitchell. INTO THE WATER BARRIER.
London Odhams 1955 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Association inscription.
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. Blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. B&w map, photographs. Inscribed on front pastedown: "With Sincere Good Wishes / & Thanks. / James J. Hinton". Mr. Hinton was associated with time trials of the Bluebird and is referenced in the book with at least one notation and a photograph (mislabelled 'Hunter'). The following quote is from an article in "Sports", November 1957 - "Donald Campbell Lives for Speed", by Diana Bartley - "(T)hat the blue-eyed youth who seems endlessly preoccupied with the enormous bright yellow rubber balloons which form course markers clearly visible to Campbell even at speeds beyond 200 m.p.h. is Jim Hinton, on temporary leave from atomic research activities with the Dunlop Rubber Co. Jim is the designer of the functional buoys and master of the course". "Into the Water Barrier" is "the personal story of Donald Campbell, only son of the late Sir Malcolm Campbell. It tells how Donald suddenly determined to try to improve his father's world water speed record of 141.74 m.p.h. for Britain when he heard of an American challenge. (The) new Bluebird was launched on Lake Ullswater in February, 1955, and after four months of further research and modification a new world record of 202.32 m.p.h. was established on 23rd July. Donald regards the development of his jet Bluebird as a scientific venture that could lead to the development of a high-speed offensive Naval weapon." 3 Cooper, Alan W. Foreword by Air Marshal Sir Harold Martin. Cover painting by Maurice V. Gardner. THE MEN WHO BREACHED THE DAMS: 617 SQUADRON 'THE DAMBUSTERS'.
Airlife, Shrewsbury, 1993.
204 pp, 8 5/8" H, soft cover. ISBN 1853103969 B&w photographs. "Alan Cooper writes about an operation which at the time and ever since has captured the imagination of the world - the attack on the German dams in May 1943. This forms a deeply-res earched history of one of the most successful operations of the Second World War carried out by the famous 617 Squadron led by Guy Gibson. This account includes the whole lead up to the final mission; the development of the bouncing bomb, the f o r m i ng of 617 Squadron and the intense course of training carried out to make the operation a success. The raid itself is viewed from both British and German camps; many of the aircrew who took part in 617 operations give their accounts, as d o se ve ra l Germans, including Albert Speer, the Armaments Minister. All in all, the book recreates the excitement and aura of danger and uncertainty which surrounded the dam busters' mission, giving the reader the full story of one of the great es t epi sod es of the war." London Hodder & Stoughton 2011 1444730827 / 9781444730821 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor to very light edge wrinkling.

96 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H). Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, maps, battle plans, reproductions, uniform studies. "The fall of Khartoum and the death of General Gordon at the hand of the Mahdi's army constituted one of the most colourful and controversial episodes of Britain's military history - a seemingly unfeeling Imperial government had 'let down' one of the nation's heroes. Here, Donald Featherstone, well known for his many books on military subjects and wargaming in particular, focuses especially on the battles fought by the relief columns." "The Osprey Campaign Series presents concise, authoritative accounts of the great conflicts of history. Each volume begins with an assessment of each commander's campaign stragegy, then recounts the progress of the fighting, blow-by-blow. More than 90 illustrations, including maps, charts and colour plates accompany the text, and a series of three-dimensional battle maps mark the critical stages of the campaign. Each volume concludes with a brief guide to the battlefield today, and detailed notes for wargamers." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Cassell, London, 1961, first edition.
177 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps. "At half past seven on the morning of the first of July 1916, along a front extending for eighteen miles in the valley of the Somme, an intensive bombardment which had conti nued since dawn lifted, and fourteen divisions of British troops stumbled out of their trenches to attack the enemy. This was the climax of Sir Douglas Haig's carefully conceived plan to break the interminable deadlock of trench warfare on th e W e s t ern Front, and score a resounding and dramatic victory over the German forces. Haig's design foundered within a few hours among the defences of Fricourt, La Boisells, and Thiepval, at the appalling cost of twenty thousand British soldier s k il le d an d thirty-five thousand wounded. - But the official dates for The Battle of the Somme are from 1st July to 18th, November 1916. The 'Big Push' went on, the preliminary bombardments, the attacks, the horrifying slaughter - every single c as ual ty be ing measured in terms of individual pain, misery, and sacrifice. Belief in the High Command that prolonged shelling must reduce an entrenched enemy to inertia and impotence, easy prey for advancing infantry, died hard. It persiste d t hro ugho ut the aut umn and into the following year, when the same ghastly pattern was repeated at Passchendaele. It was not fully discredited till the full potential of armoured vehicles was realized and military concepts, bred in minor theat res of w ar be for e th e tur n of the century, were rejected. - (This book) provides a critical, and immensely readable analysis of the policy, planning, and action of the British and French armies at the Battle of the Somme, a battle in which the cas ualti es of the Briti sh arm y alone exceeded those suffered by it during the whole of the Second World War. An important historical account of a great military blunder, it is also a vivid portrait of the tragedy, the unspeakable horror, and t he co urage, which are commo n to an y war at any time, but which were peculiarly intensified in France and Flanders from 1914 to 1918." Book is lightly cocked, has light edge wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners, light wrinkling at top/bo ttom o f spine , light brow ning on edges o f text block. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has moderate edge wear, tiny chips/tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light soiling at top/bottom edges, two scuffs on rear panel, old tape on inside of top/ bottom o f spin e. Rupert Hart-Davis, London, 1971, first edition.
319 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 024664043X B&w plates, maps. "There has never been a company like the East India Company: it ruled over nearly one-fifth of the world's population, possessed its own army and navy, its own c ivil service, and even its own church. It became the greatest military power in Asia and had a revenue larger than that of Great Britain itself. This is the story of the London merchants who, in their persistent and dogged quest for trade w i t h t h e East, struggled with misunderstanding and suspicion, rivalry with the French and the collapse of the authority of the Indian emperors. The Company brought the brilliant military conquests of men like Robert Dlive and Warren Hastings, an d th e a cq ui sitions of Sir Stamford Raffles and men who spent their entire careers in its service. There were the conquests of the Wellesleys, the intrigues and battles for power with the British government, the prejudice and envy inspired b y t he re tu rn hom e o f wealthy retired employees, and the compromise which ended in the appointment of government selected Governors-General. The story of the East India Company is one of adventure, triumph and disaster, pride and loyalty, that spa ns more th an two hund red years of British history: it is also the story of the foundation of the British Empire in India."
