160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

367 pp, 8 3/4" H. Dark blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. B&w photographs. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "L.Marsland Gander / London, / July 9, 1950" with underscore. "Marsland Gander is a man who has 'been places and seen things', things which he records in this autobiography of a successful journalist with all the vigour and humour of a great adventure. Born and brought up in London's East End, the future War Correspondent and Radio Critic started his career on a local paper and worked his way up. Since those early days he has visited more than thirty countries and met many famous men and women. His assignments have given him an 'inside slant' on some of the biggest stories of recent times, and in several instances he is now able to disclose information which was hitherto suppressed by the censor. (He) witnessed the much criticised campaign in Southern France, the sensational capture of Leros, the Airborne drop across the Rhine and the liberation of Rome, Athens and Amster-dam. Since the war he has toured America from coast to coast and has much to say of recent radio and television developments. There are personal anecdotes of President Truman, the Pope, Bernard Shaw, H.G. Wells, George Lansbury, of famous soldiers like Montgomery and Alexander, and many others." Protective measures available to the world's armed forces and methods of detection are also examined. 348 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "(T)he first complete portrait of Joey Smallwood - the most loved, feared and hated of Newfoundlanders who, through a singular will, not only changed his country's history but also held political power continuously, almost unchallenged, for twenty-one years and eight months. Smallwood was a man who, in his time, played many parts: a union organizer who became a strike breaker, a journalist who carried on a running battle with the press, a self-proclaimed socialist whose private friends included the right-wing premier of Quebec Maurice Duplessis, the Portuguese dictator Antonio Salazar, and the most controversial president of the United States, Richard Nixon. He trusted no one and believed that the only way to get somewhere was to take the wheel himself. It was this singleness of mind and purpose that saw him through two bitter and hard-fought constitutional campaigns that would see Newfoundland enter Confederation as our tenth province. Horwood cuts through the hype and half-truths, the anecdotes and legend, to get at the man and his times." Very minor wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top of front hinge area, minor rubbing, faint water mark at top inside of front hinge area.
