1 Ball, Edward. THE INVENTOR AND THE TYCOON: A GILDED AGE MURDER AND THE BIRTH OF MOVING PICTURES.
New York Doubleday 2013 0385525753 / 9780385525756 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
447 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(T)he compelling saga of an artistic genius, a ruthless railroad tycoon, and a sordid crime of passion. In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY., Basbanes, Nicholas A.
2 Basbanes, Nicholas A. AMONG THE GENTLY MAD: PERSPECTIVES AND STRATEGIES FOR THE BOOK HUNTER IN THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY.
New York Henry Holt 2002 0805051597 / 9780805051599 First Edition. Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(A) delightfully discursive twenty-first-century guide to book collecting that combines a fresh respect for proven methods of acquisition with sound advice on how to use the exciting electronic tools now available. Drawing on the superb insight he has gathered from some of the world's most notable collectors, dealers, and librarians, (the author) offers a penetrating consideration of the pastime as it enters an era in which 'everything', it seems, has become collectible, an era in which the computer has become an indispensable tool. For newcomers, this book presents the rare opportunity to look over the shoulders of accomplished book hunters, all with their own successful strategies, as they pursue their prey, to glean some invaluable tips from the pros. Along with conveying the thrill of the chase, their stories remind readers that good books bought shrewdly are 'always' wise inventments. Traditionalists who believe that preparation and knowledge remain the soundest foundations for success will not be disappointed by Basbane's contention that for all the wonders of the Internet, there is still no substitute for going out into the field, meeting up with kindred spirits at book fairs, open shops, auctions, and flea markets, and learning how to 'handle the goods' from people who have been there. At the same time, he questions the relevance of a few axioms that have been accepted as gospel, while explaining the timeless wisdom of others." Tiny bump at top of front hinge, tiny scuff at top edge of front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

252 pp, 13 1/2" H. Brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine, pictorial endpapers. In publisher's original plain cardboard slipcase. B&w and colour reproductions. "(A) stunning exhibition of the city's mag-nificent art treasures. Compiled by the directors of Prague's National Museum and National Gallery, this important and eye-filling work is a rich cornucopia which art historians, students of central Europe, and travelers to the historic city may sample with profit and pleasure. Itself an art treasure with its ancient buildings, historic monuments, and panoramic views, 'the city of a hundred towers' is home to notable collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and objects d'art dating from Charles IV and even earlier. Reflecting Prague's position at the heart of Europe along centuries-old trade routes, these collections encompass the continent's many schools of art, architecture, and handicrafts and repre-sent a distillation of Prague's turbulent thousand-year history. Modern scholarship, including some extraordinary scholarly detective work on the Prague Castle Gallery collection, has uncovered, restored, and made available to experts and public alike many little-known treasures. Equally impressive are collections of early art, coins, astronomical instruments, and Bohemian and modern Czechoslovak glass and porcelain. History of church and state can be glimpsed in the art of stone-cutters, goldsmith and silversmiths, weavers and embroiderers, and masters of illuminated manu-scripts." Contents: Introduction; National Museum; National Gallery; Museum of Decorative Arts; Museum of the City of Prague; Treasury of St. Vitus' Cathedral; Prague Castle Gallery; State Jewish Museum; Military Museum; Illuminated Manuscripts in Prague Libraries. Slight toning to edges of text block, light toning in margins of illustration pages. 5 Dickson, Lovat. THE MUSEUM MAKERS: THE STORY OF THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM.
Toronto Royal Ontario Museum 1986 0888543263 / 9780888543264 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Near Fine
214 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Mummies, dinosaurs, Persian textiles, exotic fishes, European bronzes, fossils, early Canadian furniture, artifacts of the Native peoples of Canada, rare Chinese ceramics, and a Ming tomb with its guardian figures - all these and much more are to be found in the galleries of the Royal Ontario Museum. (This book) gives a vivid account of the origins and growth of this impressive institution, which each year touches the lives of hundreds of thousands, from researchers to school classes thronging the galleries, to senior citizens involved in special programs. (The author) uses a biographical framework for the story of this exciting institution. First on the scene are the founders, such memorable figures as Sir Edmund Walker and Charles Trick Currelly. Then come the early directors, curators, and technicians, whose research and discoveries in every branch of the natural sciences and art and archaeology contributed to the Royal Ontario Museum's growing international reputation. In the aftermath of World War II a new generation of museum men and women took up the challenge of keeping the Royal Ontario Musuem one of the last combined science and art and archaeology musuems of first rank in the world. The unfolding story, with accomplishements, stresses, and strains interwoven, is captivating." One tiny corner bump, tiny bump at top/bottom of spine, tiny dent on front board. 6 Donegan, Rosemary. Introduction by Rick Salutin. SPADINA AVENUE
Vancouver Douglas & McIntyre 1985 0888944721 / 9780888944726 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 11 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Spadina has been the starting point for wave after wave of new Canadian immigrants. Once the main focus for Jewish culture and life in Toronto, the street became a centre of commerce and saw intense political activity during the thirties and forties. Now the Jewish garment factories overlook bustling Chinese sidewalk markets. Greek cafes jostle with delicatessens and Szechuan restaurants. Contemporary art and music thrive amidst this colourful ethnic diversity. Studios and alternative galleries crowd abandoned warehouse space above street level, and all along the street, such classic watering holes as Grossman's, the El Macombo, the Paramount and the Silver Dollar dispense entertainment for tastes that run from black and new wave music to strippers. (This book) presents a collection of photographs and related texts ranging from the years when the street was a tree-lined boulevard, right through to today, when the Queen Street art scene and a rapidly expanding Chinatown are transforming Spadina. Drawing on his own Jewish roots and family history, Rick Salutin provides a very personal introduction that demonstrates how and why Spadina is unique, why it has become so important to those whose lives it has intersected. Organized to reflect and even recreate the Spadina experience, (it) takes the reader up the street starting at the lakeshore and ending at Bloor Street." Very tiny bump at top corner of both boards, small slight bump at top of rear hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds.

PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946., Eates, Margot.
7 Eates, Margot. PAUL NASH: THE MASTER OF THE IMAGE, 1889-1946.
John Murray, London, 1973.
156 pp, 4to (11 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour reproductions, b&w photographs. "Paul Nash was always a leading and often a controversial figure in modern English art. His complete integrity of vision, his sturdy individualism and his remarkable ability to evoke the indwelling spirit of his subject - a quiet woodland scene, a menacing prehistoric site, a strange 'objet trouve' or 'monster' bombers on the ground or in the air - set him somewhat apart from his contemporarie s. In its later phases his work was marked by a degree of intuitive vision which may well explain why he never adhered closely to any school or sought to found one himself. Despite this apparent isolation, or perhaps even because of it, his co n t r i bution to the art of the twentieth century was both vital and unique. No full scale study of his life and work has appeared for nearly twenty years and the Paul Nash Trustees felt that the time had come for a reappraisal of his achievement. Th ey a ccordingly invited Margot Eates, who had edited the 'Paul Nash Memorial Volume' and knew him well towards the end of his life to undertake this new, fully illustrated monograph. In it she traces Paul Nash's artistic development in relatio n to hi s b ackground and personality, and in a long appendix has attempted the difficult task of producing a workable chronology covering over one thousand of his recorded paintings and drawings." Slight musty odor to pages, small light dust mar k on b otto m of text block, a few tiny light marks on top of textblock, small heavy dent on front board - migrates lightly into first few pages. Dust jacket has light wrinkling on spine and parts of rear panel, small closed perforation on front p an el, l ight edge wrinkling at top edge, light wear/wrinkling with tiny tears/chips at top of hinges and flap-folds, rear panel color has light to moderate fading, slight browning and soiling. Unpaginated, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Opaque printed mylar dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "This bookwork, produced by Oakville Galleries, represents the third and final version of a photographic work begun two years ago at the Domaine de Kerguehennec in Brittany, France, where it took the form of a work in situ: a 'fonds photographic' that was placed in the drawers of the castle's library to become a permanent installation. The work represents a monument to a fictional woman photographer who lived in the castle sometime in the late 19th century, and who wandered the park - especially the area around the lake - obsessively taking pictures of the landscape. Her mental health slowly deterioriated and eventually she killed herself. Her decline is illustrated in the photographs placed in the drawers in porfolio folders or boxes - ." Here is an inside look at the bourgeois and eccen tric Guggenheim family, from a mother who skimped on tips to an uncle who gave fur coats to any woman who asked. We are taken behind the scenes at Art of This Century, Peggy's renowned New York gallery, where she actively promoted the Abstract Expressionists: Pollock, Motherwell, Hans Hofmann, Rothko. 174 pp, 10 3/4" H. B&w photographs, colour and b&w reproductions. "Throughout (this book) Daphne Odjig's story has been told by herself as related through R.M. Vanderburgh and M.E. Southcott. As a product of an oral tradition that was still flourishing during her childhood in the village of Wikwemikong on Manitoulin Island in Georgian Bay, Daphne became a superb storyteller, in the tradition of her elders. It is this inheritance that she has built on as she told her stories to her two collaborators. Odjig's skills as a storyteller are reflected in the impressionistic introductions to many of the chapters. Her lively expresion of events and activities in her life come vividly alive for Vanderburgh who has maintained as much as possible the authenticity of Odjig's narratives and tried to pass these impressions along to the reader. Odjig's skill in visual communication is evident in the paintings reproduced here. Southcott has tried to pass on to the reader the thoughts and emotions the artist experienced in the creation of these paintings."
