NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS., Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.)
3 Delderfield, R.F. (Ronald Frederic Delderfield.) NAPOLEON'S MARSHALS.
Philadelphia Chilton 1966 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
242 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Napoleon, that master strategist, created twenty-six Marshals of France between the years 1804 and 1815. These men, who held the highest positions in the Empire after Napoleon himself, came from diverse, and often humble backgrounds. Among the twenty-six were officers, sergeant majors, rankers, apprentices, a farmer's boy, a brewer, a poet, a smuggler, an actor, a barber, and a prince. The two qualities they all had in common were courage and ambition. During the years when Napoleon was conqueror of most of Europe, the marshals acquired titles and great riches, and in the end there was only one who was not to some extent corrupted by greed or ambition, and who remained loyal to the man who had elevated them all to power. Through their stories, and the eyes of the author, the entire panorama of French history, from the first days of the French Revolution until the restoration of the Bourbons, is seen. The color and excitement of the great battles, the strategy, the roll of history is here in (this book), the first to follow the actual careers of the marshals from July, 1789, until their deaths." Light cigarette odor, a few pages with small a soft wrinkle at top corner, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light browning at top edge, very light edge wear/wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

5 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.

London Hamlyn 1980 0600363651 / 9780600363651 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." One page with small dog-ear crease - indent on adjacent page, minor wrinkling at bottom of spine, small shallow bump on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has very light edge wrinkling, soft crease at top of rear panel, some light water staining on inside top surface.

8 Hood, Robert. Edited by C. Stuart Houston. TO THE ARCTIC BY CANOE 1819-1821. THE JOURNAL AND PAINTINGS OF ROBERT HOOD, MIDSHIPMAN WITH FRANKLIN.
Montreal Arctic Institute of North America / McGill-Queen's University Press 1975 0773501924 / 9780773501928 Reprinted with Corrections Hard Cover Fine Very Good Robert Hood.
217 pp, 11" H. B&w and colour illustrations, maps. "(In 1819, a) dedicated but ill-prepared group of Englishmen set out under instructions from the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to seek for the Northwest Passage. They encountered every hardship and hazard during their two-year mission, a mission which culminated, almost inevitably, in the loss of many lives. One of those who died was a young midshipman, Robert Hood, who had, in spite of the many dangers and problems that beset the expedition, kept a remarkable and invaluable record, in words and paintings, of the experiences of this, the first Franklin expedition. Hood's journal, less formal and more lively than Franklin's official account, shows his appreciation of the beauty as well as the harshness of his surroundings and an awareness, unusual in his time, of some of the adverse effects on the native peoples and their environment of the coming of Europeans. His paintings are among the finest as well as the earliest records of the animals and birds of northern Canada." Dust jacket has minor edge wear, light wear and crease at top of spine, faint small line indentation on rear panel.

9 Houston, C. Stuart, editor. Commentary by I.S. MacLaren. (George Back.) ARCTIC ARTIST: THE JOURNAL AND PAINTINGS OF GEORGE BACK, MIDSHIPMAN WITH FRANKLIN, 1819-1822.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1994 0773511814 / 9780773511811 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good George Back.
403 pp, 11" H. B&w and colour reproductions, maps. "(T)he liveliest and most complete account of Sir John Franklin's tragic first Arctic land expedition. George Back's prose captures the drama of this journey, and his superb watercolour sketches reveal the beauty and wonder of this northern land. Back's journal completes Stuart Houston's trilogy of journals of Franklin's officers, and is particularly valuable because it is the only journal that records the entire expedition; Franklin himself relied on it for his own published account of the journey. Houston provides an introduction and extensive annotations, as well as synopses of the frank comments regarding the expedition recorded in the various journals of the Hudson's Bay fur trade posts. I.S. MacLaren's commentary on Back's paintings reveal a naval officer of exceptional talent. Conversant with the artistic conventions and aesthetic temper of his age, Back used his sketchbooks not only to depict the expedition's progress but also to capture his imaginative response to the northern wilderness. MacLaren also edits and comments on two other documents by Back during the expedition: a candid letter to his brother and a poem dramatizing the disaster that claimed the lives of eleven of the twenty explorers in Franklin's party." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine and at top of rear panel, two very tiny dents on front panel, crease down front flap.

LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI., Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>)
10 Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>) LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI.
St. Martin's Press, New York, 1992) Ist U.S. edition.
252 pp., 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, reproductions. ISBN 0312070179 "(E)xamines Christina Rossetti's life alongside those of of other nineteenth-century women writers - notably Emily Bronte, Elizabeth Barrett Brown ing, and Emily Dickinson. (She) was the youngest of four children, born in England to Italian parents. Although she and her brother, Dante Gabriel, were known as the 'two storms', Christina's passionate nature was curbed in a way that her broth e r ' s was not, as she submitted to the social and religious pressures that lay so heavily on Victorian women. Like E.B.B., Christina suffered the tyranny of a loving family. Her sister Maria's influence was described as 'a species of police surv ei ll an ce', and Christina was always careful never to write anything that would hurt her mother. As her personal life became increasingly tragic, her output of religious poetry grew. Her desire for both poetic and moral excellence kept her conti nua lly in conflict, a struggle whose corrosive effects deeply affected her writing. (Her) deliberate self-effacement, Dante Gabriel's portrayal of her as the meek virgin, and William Rossetti's role as editor and interpreter of her work have gra dual ly b lott ed out the passionate, lively spirit who wrote with such simplicity and power. (The author's) fascinating work finally strips away the shadows of Christina's life to reveal her true self." THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS., MacBeth, R.G., Rev.
11 MacBeth, R.G., Rev. THE MAKING OF THE CANADIAN WEST; BEING THE REMINISCENCES OF AN EYE-WITNESS.
Toronto Coles 1973 Facsimile Edition. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good-
230 pp, 8 5/8" H. Burgundy cloth with black title block, gilt lettering/banding on spine, gilt lettering/banding on front board - one of the Coles Canadian Collection. B&w photographs, drawings. A facsimile of the edition published by William Briggs, Toronto, 1898. "As a boy, R.G. MacBeth witnessed the struggle we now know as the Riel Rebellion. His account begins with the barring to the new Canadian governor of the highway between Fort Garry and the border on October 21, 1869, and ends with the triumphant return of the Winnipeg Light Infantry to Winnipeg in 1885. Written from 'notes made nightly at the camp-fire' while the author took part in the military campaign, the story is dramatic and authentic. However, there is more here than simply sources for the military or political historian. The book brings to life the drama of frontier days. The remarkable men who shaped the West walk again: Ambroise Lepine, Riel's huge lieutenant, 'the only one who manifested anything like manliness after it was over'; Dr. John Shultz, who escaped from the rebels by running six miles on an injured leg through arctic temperatures; Donald A. Smith, the commissioner from Ottawa, 'a man of rare skill and tact'; Riel himself, who 'felt the wine of a new movement in his system'. The heart-breaking struggle of these men and their contemporaries to create a new land is graphically portrayed." 13 Nichol, Eric, editor. (Francis Dickens.) DICKENS OF THE MOUNTED: THE ASTONISHING LONG-LOST LETTERS OF INSPECTOR F. DICKENS NWMP, 1874-1886.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1989 0771068077 / 9780771068072 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). Map on front endpapers, reproductions of letters on rear endpapers. "Few people know that Charles Dickens had a son who served in the North-West Mounted Police in the days when the Canadian West was wild. Those historians who mention his twelve years in the force (1874-1886) dismiss him as a round peg in a square hole, a fat, stammering, slightly deaf, alcoholic Englishman with a tendency to fall off his horse in the course of tense confrontations with Indian warriors. These recently discovered letters home to England set the record straight, and reveal the true Dickens. Not only do these letters tell us much about the Dickens family, even to the point of parodying 'Pa's' purple prose, they also tell us a great deal about early Canada as Dickens saw it in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, and Winnipeg, and in forts all across the prairies. Dickens met everyone worth meeting in the West - including Crowfoot, Gabriel Dumont, Sam Steele, Jerry Potts, and Louis Riel - and even encountered famous visitors such as Sitting Bull, the Governor General, and Col. Harry Flashman (whom he calls 'a humbug'). And while he may have blotted his copy-book surrendering Fort Pitt to Riel's rebels, we learn here that he deserves credit for inspiring the Mounties' Musical Ride and the phrase 'a Mountie always gets his man'. Editor Nichol's wonderful skills have brought this man so alive that when we part from Frank Dickens at the end of the book, we do so with the sense of having lost a friend." Small area of light browning on top of text block. Dust jacket has tiny dent on rear panel, very minor edge wrinkling.

320 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. "Whether he was a martyr to his country's growth or the traitor he was branded, and why the jury's recommendation for mercy was ignored have been the unhappy questions on Canada's conscience since that November morning in 1885 when Louis Riel walked to the gallows 'with the dignity of a king'. Although one of the author's illustrious forebears appeared for the prosecution, E.B. Osler takes his stand unequivocally on the side of Riel; and every fair-minded Canadian will want to give him a hearing." 15 Parkin, J.H. BELL AND BALDWIN: THEIR DEVELOPMENT OF AERODROMES AND HYDRODROMES AT BADDECK, NOVA SCOTIA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good
555 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, tables (several fold-out). "(P)resents a detailed chronicle of the fascinating experiments in aerial flight and with hydrofoil craft conducted by Dr. (Alexander Graham) Bell and his engineering assistant and collaborators, Frederick Walker (Casey) Baldwin, at Baddeck, Nova Scotia. Bell was the chairman and Baldwin the chief engineer of the Aerial Experiment Association (1907-9), a group founded, inspired, and financed by Mrs. Bell: the successes of the Association, were based largely on logical, step-by-step development under the guiding genius of Dr. Bell. The detailed, day-by-day records of the group's operations kept by Dr. Bell make abundantly clear that his scientific and technical contributions, and his guidance and criticism, were of great importance to the development of aviation and hydrofoils. His keen analytical and deductive mind was at its best in analysing failures and propounding remedies, as in the suggestion of the aileron following the crash of the 'Red Wing'. Dr. Parkin provides here a brief description of Bell's amazing kite experiments, which extended over many years, and led to his powered- flight projects; and, to place the work of Bell and Baldwin in proper perspective, and to enable their accomplishments to be assessed, he has included a brief record of the prior art, including descriptions of the machines, early designers, builders, and pilots, including the Wrights, the Voisins, Bleriot, and Santos Dumont. He also presents the hitherto unpublished details of the remarkable development of hydrofoil craft at Baddeck, culminating after many years, in the spectacular achievement, in 1919, of 70.85 miles per hour, by the HD-4, the fastest craft afloat at that time." *Pages 463 through 494 plus one fold-out table are duplicated* Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
