2 Bruce, Jean. THE LAST BEST WEST.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine.

"Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing. Slipcase has very light edge wear/rubbing, tiny slight puncture on one side, slight bump at top of spine.

GHOSTS ALONG THE CUMBERLAND: DEATHLORE IN THE KENTUCKY FOOTHILLS., Montell, William Lynwood.
8 Montell, William Lynwood. GHOSTS ALONG THE CUMBERLAND: DEATHLORE IN THE KENTUCKY FOOTHILLS.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1975 0870491652 / 9780870491658 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Mike Morse, photographer.
240 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "In the region of southcentral Kentucky known as the Eastern Pennyroyal the lore of death and ghosts endures as a great vestige of the past. Until twentieth-century progress intervened, beliefs and sayings were handed down by word of mouth from one generation to the next. Here, in this area which some longtime residents call the 'Pennyrile', burying one's own dead and recounting stories of their return as ghosts were common practices. But the advance of technology, improved communications, and better roads have slowly urbanized a once agrarian people, and the folk culture of earlier times has been replaced by the ways of life of the current American midstream. Nevertheless it is still possible to find people here who cling to beliefs in the omens of death and the manifestations of the supernatural. Even those who were children of the lean years of the thirties recall with a fondness verging on nostalgia what it was like to sit around the fireplace and listen to parents and grandparents swap ghost tales. In (this book, the author) uses the techniques of the skilled folklorist to capture an almost-gone way of life in the 'Pennyrile', when change rarely occured, when traditional customs were clung to, and when people enjoyed talking about old times and serving as chroniclers of the past to the present. He and his former students have recorded the actual words of these people, letting them literally tell it like it was. In searching out and collecting these lingering oral traditions, in relating them to the culture which produced or nurtured them, and in collating them with persistent items of folk traditions found elsewhere, his work will be a model for similar comparative studies of folk belief systems found in other regions of the country." Contents: Preface; Prologue: The Kentucky Foothills, Where Folk Belief Abounds; Introduction to Omens of Death; Death Beliefs; Death Omen Narratives; Introduction to the Dead; Folk Beliefs Associated with the Dead; Introduction to Ghostlore; Ghost Narratives; Glossary; Selected Bibliography; Index of Collectors; Index of Tale Types and Motifs; General Index. Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has old price label on rear panel, very light edge wear, a few light small scratches on fron panel, minor rubbing, light wrinkling/creasing at top edge, minor browning on inside.
