282 pp, lg 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he commu-nicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkle.

ARCHITECTURAL JUDGEMENT., Collins, Peter.
5 Collins, Peter. ARCHITECTURAL JUDGEMENT.
Montreal McGill - Queen's University Press 1971 0773501142 / 9780773501140 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
220 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The expansion of architectural theory into the realms of ecology, cybernetics and even pathology has inevitably led to renewed speculation about the nature of architectural decision-making. But whereas research has tended to place all the emphasis on the psychology of perception, Professor Peter Colllins here suggests that a more fruitful field of investigation is to be found in the intellectual techniques evolved by the legal profession. (The book) utilizes this analogy by surveying the topic consecutively from two separate viewpoints. Part I analyses the nature of judgements about architecture by comparing them with concepts evolved within the legal process. Part II attempts a synthesis in which, after suggesting some of the inadequacies of biological and aesthetic criteria, the author puts forth a case for fuller recognition of the jurist's contribution to the notion of professional criteria, as they affect, or should affect, architectural judgement." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light edge wear, faint erased pencil mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART., Danchev, Alex.
6 Danchev, Alex. ALCHEMIST OF WAR: THE LIFE OF BASIL LIDDELL HART.
London Weidenfeld & Nicolson, London, 1998, first edition. 1998 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
369 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "Basil Liddell Hart was a rare bird: military writer, creative artist, journalist, propagandist, controversialist, archivist, adviser, exemplar, and thrower of stones. A war poet in prose - his best work carried a comparable charge - his writing engaged and enraged three generations. Like a true poet, his voice lingers. His language and his leanings saturate later thought, often unwittingly. Liddell Hart is the Bertrand Russell of his field: he is all-pervasive. Young people who looked up to him (in every sense) were often reminded of a stork - benign, fastidious, outlandish, perhaps even a little comic; undeniably impressive. He dressed well. He dined well. He tipped well. He consorted with Lawrence of Arabia. His womenfolk looked enchanting: he chose their clothes. For the Captain who taught Generals was an expert in more fields than one. He was also a leading authority on fashion - in particular, the corset. Liddell Hart had a sophisticated appreciation of l'artillerie de nuit. Like all great artists, his best ideas were other people's, made matchlessly his own. (This) is the first biography of this remarkable man: a brilliant evocation of a life more succulent, and more subversive, than we ever knew." Tiny bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has small wrinkle at top edge of rear flap, two 1" parallel knife scratches on rear panel.

THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE: HITLER'S FINAL GAMBLE., Delaforce, Patrick.
7 Delaforce, Patrick. THE BATTLE OF THE BULGE: HITLER'S FINAL GAMBLE.
Pearson, Harlow, 2006.
430 pp, small 8vo (7 3/4" H), soft cover. ISBN 1405840625 "After their success in Normandy in the summer of 1944 the Allies thought that the war would be 'over by Christmas'. But in the autumn Adolf Hitler decided to take an incredible gamble. I f it had succeeded, he would have seized the crucial supply port of Antwerp, and divided and cut off half the Allied armies in Belgium and Holland. The final outcome could have been their surrender or at best a second 'Dunkirk'. Patrick De l a f o r c e tells the story of the furious fighting and heavy losses and how close Hitler came to being successful. Featuring individual stories from the American, British and German combatants in the Ardennes battle, and illustrated with photog ra ph s an d dr aw i ngs (many from American war artists) and battle plans, this book provides a gripping account of one of the most important battles of the Second World War." Exterior - minor edge wear, very small crease at top corner of rear cover, two light creases down spine, small indentation on front cover. Very Good

Duke University Press, Durham, North Carolina, 1968, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "A considerable amount of our literary and social criticism has been based on the premise that during much of our history the United States has been inhospitable to the intellectual and the a rtist. The term 'exile' has been used frequently and Henry James has been pictured as the prime victim. The present study is a detailed examination of a selected number of representative writers, artists, and intellectuals who spent a con s i d e r a b l e amount of time abroad. Its purpose is to determine the extent to which they were 'exiled', and especially to learn what they had to say about the contrast between the American and European scenes....Those discussed are Irving, Ti ck no r, B an cr of t, C ogswell, Cooper, Morse, Greenough, Powers, Allston, Story, Fuller, Hawthorne, James, Frederic, and Wharton. In a special chapter devoted to the unique problems of the expatriates of the 1920's, such figures as Stein, Hemi ngw ay, Cr owl ey, Fi tzg era ld, and the Crosbys are included...." 225 pp, small 8vo (7 11/16" H), hard cover - no dust jacket. No. 1442 of an limited edition of 2000 copies. "Henry Blake Fuller died on July 28, 1929, just on the eve of this book's publication. It seems almost foregone that he will take his place among those many artists to whom recognition comes too late. The man who wrote such miniature masterpieces as 'The Chevalier of Pensieri-Vani' and 'The Last Refuge' (which Carl Van Vechten has called a forerunner of 'South Wind') is unknown to the world at large. Only a few discerning critics are aware that from his pen came an unparalleled series of novels about Chicago (although this particular one has a European locale); that this quient man was possessed of one of the finest talents that America has known..." 12 Fuller, John. THE EXTRAORDINARY WOOL MILL AND OTHER STORIES.
London Andre Deutsch 1980 0233971963 / 9780233971964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Peter Rush.
96 pp, 8 1/16" H. B&w illustrations. "Can you fall through a hole in the water? How do you make Purple Cow Pudding? Can you remember someone who doesn't exist? Why shouldn't a wool mill be run by sheep? Why isn't the sky yellow and spring flowers blue? How do you get the fattest woman in the world out of a cottage that is almost smaller than she is? You'll find all the answers in these stories about Emily, who has some strange adventures or says she does. You may not believe in what falls on her from the sky (her sisters didn't) and it surely can't be true that she shouts out Martian words in her sleep, but can you explain away that mysterious little yellow van? Or the fact that the village under the sea is really there on the map? As well as ghosts and dreams there are lots of ordinary things in this book, like building a beach bonfire or mending a car's fan-belt. Peter Rush's line drawings beautifully reflect the subtle mixture of fantasy and solid reality which is so important a part of these stories." Contents: The Extraordinary Wool Mill; Beach Menu; The Little Yellow Van; Pegglara Pellew; The Hole in the Water; Forgotten; Cold Feet; The Fattest Woman in the World; 'They're Coming!'; A Spring Walk. 16 Grey, Zane. TALES OF FRESH-WATER FISHING.
South Brunswick A.S. Barnes 1971 0498077896 / 9780498077890 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Good+
277 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(This book) was first published in 1928, and has now been reprinted in a new format. With the flick of his rod and a twist of his pen, this well-known sportsman-novelist takes you with him on his trips through inland waters. From Pennsylvania to Oregon, from the calm waters of the Delware to the rushing torrents of the Klamath River, Mr. Grey casts and strikes his way. Salmon, black bass, and steelhead trout come tumbling to his line, though none too easily. There are many disappointments and many battles lost. The author tells stories of his fishing adventures with excitement and zeal. His vivid descriptions of the places he fished and the people he fished with are filled with enthusiasm. You'll learn about his techniques for outwitting the piscatorial species and the variety of baits he experimented with. You'll read about the many types of reels and rods, and those that he used. Come with Zane Grey as he takes you to the Rogue River, the most beautiful stream in Oregon, and the coldest, deepest, and swiftest he ever fished. Read about Ken, a fellow fisherman, who followed his catch down Rocky Riffle, forgetting about the deep channel below. Feel the author's anxiety as he battles with a Chinook salmon on the line. The long tug gave him aching arms and cramped hands, but he won - a prize 57-pound beauty. The 100 illustrations, many of them full-page photographs taken by the author, give you an even fuller opportunity of following every joyous tug of the line." Book slightly twisted, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several very small tears - one with crease, very light browning on spine and flap-folds, light rubbing with light color loss on front panel.

THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY., Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh.
20 Little, William T. Foreword by W.J. Eastaugh. THE TOM THOMSON MYSTERY.
Toronto McGraw-Hill 1970 0070926557 / 9780070926554 Hard Cover Good+ Good+
239 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "In 1956, nearly forty years after the death of Canadian artist, Tom Thomson, William T. Little and three companions set themselves to a macabre task. Ever since July 16, 1917, when the artist's badly decomposed body was found floating in the waters of Canoe Lake, controversy and conjecture hovered over the matter of how Tom Thomson really met his death. It was as a result of this prolonged uncertainty that the four men began digging in the little cemetery in Algonquin Park where Thomson was supposedly buried. They were determined to solve, if only for themselves, part of the mystery that surrounded the name of Tom Thomson. What they discovered only confirmed their suspicion that the full story of Thomson's untimely death was not in fact as history had recorded it. The lack of sound and conclusive evidence from earlier investigations set William Little into action. Meticulously he pieced together everything that had ever been written, documented, speculated, or theorized about Thomson during the artist's lengthy periods in Algonquin Park - with special emphasis on those strange events which occurred prior to and after his 'accidental death by drowning'. On the one hand William Little has been able to give us a fuller understanding of both Thomson's personality and his instincts as a painter. On the other, he has amassed considerable evidence that suggests a murder, a suspect, and a motive." Large diagonal creasing on page leaf xiii/xiv, small light stain on fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket has light browning at edges and on spine/flap-folds, several very small edge tears and one small 'v' tear on front hinge - all archivally taped, light rubbing/soiling, large corner crease on front flap.
