2 Bowyer, Michael J.F. 2 GROUP R.A.F. A COMPLETE HISTORY, 1936-1945. (RAF)
Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554254 / 9780947554255 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
532 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2' H). B&w photographs, maps. "No. 2 Group was formed in Bomber Command to support the Army. After equipping with Blenheims it specialized in daylight operations. It engaged in the first raid of the war. After taking part in the Norweigan campaign, it was thrown into the struggle to save France. Heavy losses ensued during operations demanding great courage. A hazardous anti-shipping campaign took the Group to Malta. Night intruder operations were made against airfields, and fighter-escorted attacks on Occupied Territory continued until the 1944 Allied landings in France, where support to the invasion was subsequently given and an effective night interdictor campaign carried out. The Group mounted many spectacular operations, particularly when using Mosquitoes. This is indeed a story of immense courage. Based upon records maintained by Royal Air Force Commands, Groups and Squadrons together with personal accounts by those who flew with the Group, the book gives a detailed day-by-day picture of operations, their planning and execution, illustrated with detailed maps. Appendices give plentiful details of the aircraft, the squadrons and the Group's wartime effort." Three small dints on rear board, light rubbing. Dust jacket has three small dints on rear panel, large crease at top corner of rear flap/panel, light edge wrinkling, one tiny closed tear, light rubbing.

After achieving acclaim with his gang of street urchins, affectionately nicknamed the 'Small Fry', Steig branched out, exploring through his drawings the psychological undercurrents in relationships between parent and child, husband and wife, self and society. Beginning in the sixties, Steig demonstrated his understanding and awe of children in numerous award-winning picture books, including such classics as: 'Rotten Island' (1969), 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble' (1970 Caldecott Medal), 'Dominic' (1972), 'Gorky Rises' (1980), 'Doctor De Soto' (1982 Newbery Award), and 'Shrek!' (1990). Featuring hundreds of illustrations, including a portfolio of previously unpublished pieces selected by the artists himself, (this book) celebrates the life work of an uncompromising iconoclast who has never lost sight of the power of humor." 166 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w reproductions. "The purpose of this study is to give an annotated bibliography of the books and discuss the authors whose words were handprinted by the Woolfs. It has proved easiest to investigate the books and understand how their authors came to be connected with the Press by considering them in groups based on their relationship with the Woolfs. Of course the Woolfs printed their own works and that of their friends. They also printed work by people they admired and wanted to encourage in their endeavor to reach the public eye. Since most of these people developed careers of some note, it is possible to give an indication of their relationships to the Woolfs and what these particular books meant to them at the time of publication." From the Introduction. Contents: List of Illustrations; Preface; Introduction; The Press in the Lives of the Woolfs; Books by the Woolfs; Books by Friends; Books by Acquaintances; Books by Worthy Unknown; The Woolfs and the Book Arts Tradition; Illustrations of the Books in Order of Publication; Appendix A: List of Handprinted Books in Order of Publication; Appendix B: List of Handprinted Books in Order by Author; Notes; Bibliography; Index. Toronto Merritt 1980 092088606X / 9780920886069 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good Andre Bieler.
176 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w reproductions, b&w photographs. "This study of the life and work of Andre Bieler, one of Canada's most important living artists, spans eighty-three years of his life and art in Europe, the United States and Canada. It studies him against the flowering of twentieth-century Canadian art, a fascinating history in itself. (S)tarts with (his) birth in Switzerland in 1896, tracing his European family roots, his World War I experiences and his traditional artist's apprenticeship in Europe, his arrival in Canada as a young artist and subsequent exploration of the rural 'habitant' way of life in Quebec's L'ile d'Orleans and on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Most important, the author shows us the extraordinary creative energy of Andre Bieler, his exuberance and intense love of people and life that, even in his eighties, keep him experimenting in art, traveling across Canada, Europe and Mexico in search of his subject, and which define him as an artist of classic, versatile and sustained talent." Wallace and Harrison McCain worked hard and played hard and turned their family's name into the most famous Canadian brand in the world. Because they knew people were their most important asset, they hired and trained enthusiastic, independent thinkers to help them build McCain Foods into a global powerhouse in the frozen food industry.
