PRAIRIE FIRE: THE 1885 NORTH-WEST REBELLION., Beal, Bob & Macleod, Rod.
2 Beal, Bob & Macleod, Rod. PRAIRIE FIRE: THE 1885 NORTH-WEST REBELLION.
Hurtig, Edmonton, (1984).
384 pp, 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888302622 B&w photos, maps, drawings. "(T)ells us about the Metis, who simply wanted the long-standing boundaries of their river-lot farms respected by the government as Ottawa divided up the land to sell it to homesteaders. It tells about the Indians, whose land had been sold by the government and tradition and self-support destroyed, and who were now literally starving while the government broke its promises or tried to tie them to concessions. It tells us of local government officials, who could not agree among themselves whether the Indians should be treated with discipline or with food. It tells us about the frightened settlers and townspeople, caught between the Indians and Metis they often sympathized with and the government they looked to for support. And it tells about the soldiers, who heroically set out to quell a rebellion, but whose greatest ordeal was the long train journey on which they were beset by freezing cold and extreme shortages of food." 5 Charters, Dean. Introduction by Angela M. O'Connell. MOUNTIE, 1873-1973: A GOLDEN TREASURY OF THOSE EARLY YEARS.
Don Mills Collier-Macmillan 1973 029734207 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
253 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "1973 marks the centennial anniver- sary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. (This book is) a pictorial tour of adventure through those glorious early days. One hundred years is not long when we are talking about history, but a glance at these photographs shows the phenomenal growth of Canada during that period. And the man who laid the groundwork for this phenomenal growth was the Mountie. Without his work of pacification, the task of settling and civilizing the Canadian west could not have been carried out. The photographers who took these pictures must have been imbued with the same spirit of adventure that motivated the Mountie. The proof is here. Wherever the men of the N.W.M.P. went, the photographers followed. The results of their work are here, a fitting tribute to the men of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police." Tiny soft bump at top corner of pages 163 to end of book, previous owner's small label on front pastedown, very faint tiny foxing marks on bottom of text block, minor wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - moderate on rear flap-fold, several edge tears (some with creases) archivally taped, light rubbing

8 MacGregor, James G. EDMONTON TRADER: THE STORY OF JOHN A. McDOUGALL.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." "In this book twenty-four of the best-known tales are given in their original form, either as they were first printed in English, or in their earliest surviving text. Each tale has a historical introduction, showing the development of the story and noting particular points of interest. Was Cinderella's shoe really a glass slipper or was it made of fur? Was Red Ridinghood devoured by the wolf, or was she saved? How did the old woman in Southey's version of 'The Three Bears' become the Goldilocks we know today? In a general introduction Iona and Peter Opie look at the realism as well as the enchantment in the tales, and put into perspective the contributions of Per-rault, the Grimm brothers, and Hans Christian Andersen. The book contains 150 illustrations, over 40 in colour, by famous illustrators such as Walter Crane, George Cruickshank, Gustave Dore, Kate Green-away, Arthur Rackham, W. 15 Stephens, H.L. Foreword by Philip Hofer. A FROG HE WOULD A WOOING GO. ROM ORIGINALS DESIGNS BY H.L. STEPHENS.
Walker and Company, New York, 1967, first printing.
Unpaginated, 10" H, hardcover with pictorial front board - no dust jacket. "H.L. Stephens (1824-1882, originally from Philadelphia, later working in New York) was a very good illustrator who has been accorded faint praise by the critics. The reaso n is largely the result of the poor reproductions in which his work appeared. That is why this edition of 'A Frog he Would A-Wooing Go' uses the original drawings by Stephens, which are at the moment in private hands at Harvard University, r a t h e r t han the reproductive lithographs of 1865 which were made from them. The difference is striking; for these drawings compare with the works of Stephens' far more celebrated contemporary John Tenniel, whose 'Alice in Wonderland', Londo n , 19 65 , fi rs t s aw the light of day in the same twelve months." 15 full page monotone illustrations with verses underneath. Slight wrinkling to bottom edges of pages, slight waviness due to dampness at bottom fore-edge of pages - light wate rm ar k o n l as t p age , min or to light soiling on boards - mainly on rear board, tiny bump at top of spine. 17 Stewart, Robert. SAM STEELE: LION OF THE FRONTIER.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1979 038513598X / 9780385135986 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Fair Inscribed By Author
303 pp, 8 3/8" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. Inscribed on title page: "To Mr. Walter Loudon / an old Nor'Wester / Robert Stewart". "Young Sam Steele joined the North-West Mounted Police at its founding in the spring of 1873. His physical strength, skill with a horse, and determined character made him an ideal recruit for the fledgling force faced with the task of policing an area the size of Western Europe. Those first Mounties, ill-equipped and undermanned as they were, managed to bring order to a vast frontier and made possible the preservation of the fragile Canadian confederation. As he rose through the ranks, (he) took part in the great and small events of the opening of the Canadian West. Whether dealing with the refugee Sioux Chief Sitting Bull or tracking down cattle rustlers and murderers - and then dispensing justice in a tent courtroom - Steele displayed a combination of bravery, commonsense, fairness, and ingenuity. Thanks to Sam and the thirty men under him, not a mile of the Canadian Pacific Railway was lost to lawlessness during its construction through the prairies. Durng the gold rush of '98, he gained the respect of the roughnecks and dance hall girls alike in Dawson City, becoming known as the Lion of the Yukon. As commander of Lord Strathcona's Horse in the Boer War, Fighting Sam and his Big Stirrups rode the veldt as they had the Canadian prairie. This is a rich and exciting biography of the most famous Mounted Policeman of his day; it is also the story of a fascinating and formative period in Canadian history." Slight wrinkling at bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board, one tiny corner bump, a few tiny bumps on bottom edge of front board, two ssmall scuffs to fore-edge of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has several tiny chips and small tears archivally taped, small edge creases, light soiling on rear panel, light liquid stain at bottom of rear flap-fold, two 3" tears on front panel with old tape on inside, slight browning.
