The present exhibition attempts to give a balanced representation of the entire period. Howerever, a period of over sixty years in the rapidly changing world of the nineteenth century could hardly show anything approaching uniformity of style. Even the most cursory view of this exhibition should demonstrate that no one set of generalities is adequate to describe the variety of works created during the era, all of them 'Victorian'." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of covers, minor edge wear, spine flat and uncreased.

3 Elleman, Barbara. Preface by Trina Schart Hyman. TOMIE DEPAOLA: HIS ART & HIS STORIES. (DE PAOLA)
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1999 0399231293 / 9780399231292 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Tomie dePaola
218 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w. Tomie dePaola is among the best known, best loved artist-authors creating books for children today. His art and his stories, filled with imagination, humor, elegance, and curiosity, emanate from a love of life reflected in everything he does. Barbara Elleman, a critic in her own right, explores Tomie dePaola as artist and storyteller. The result is this fascinating, highly readable account which looks first at dePaola's life, complete with family photographs, and then at the extraordinary scope of his work - autobiographical picture books, folktales, Christmas themes, religious stories, collections, and more. She explores patterns and motifs that thread through his illustrations from the beginning; discusses major influences on his art; gives a rare glimpse at his fine art and his 'non-book' designs; provides an intriguing step-by-step account of the development of a picture book, 'Big Anthony, His Story', from the original draft of the manuscript to finished art. Ms. Elleman's thoughtful narrative brings a fresh appreciation of this unique artist-author. Tomie dePaola's followers and those discovering him for the first time will find this remarkable volume filled with over 200 illustrations a feast for the eye to be looked at again and again." A few very tiny edge bumps. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.
