1 Ainsworth, Ruth. MORE TALES OF SHELLOVER
New York Roy 1968 First American Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Antony Maitland
125 pp, 8" H. Charming b&w illustations by Kate Greenaway Medal winner Antony Maitland. "Shellover (a tortoise) woke up with his head full as ever with wonderful stories. Mrs. Candy and her pets: the cat, the dog, the cow and the chickens are entranced with all the new stories. There are green-clad dancers who vanish at cockcrow. A strange feathered child hatches from a speckled egg. A baby is fished out of the sea. Ordinary-seeming children make snowmen who can talk, and have a friend who is a witch. Shellover tells a new story about Minnie the cat, and her inquisitive kittens; another about two boys in an adventure playground; and the little girl and her friends, the horse and the hen. When Shellover gets sleepy this time, the pets decide to tell their own stories. The results are delightful!" Small letter "R" in red ink, birthday gift inscription and some soft creases on front free endpaper; one page with a dog-ear crease; very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; one tiny corner crease; tiny mark on bottom of text block; very light edge wear; two tiny dints on top edge of front board. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine, small light pink stain on inside of front panel, top edge and flap-folds; light edge wrinkling; wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds with some tiny chips and tears; minor rubbing and soiling.

287 pp + publisher's advertising, 8 3/4" H. Dark green cloth with gilt lettering & banding on spine. B&w photographs, drawing. "Controlling one of the greatest forces in international affairs, the Director-General of the B.B.C. has attained a position of power second only to that of a Prime Minister. He directs a machine that produces mass-education, mass-entertainment, and mass-information for continuous consumption by millions of the peoples of this country and every overseas nation of the Commonwealth. (His life story) is here told in full for the first time, and makes sensational revelations of the career and character of this remarkable, but unknown man. (It) is superimposed on the background of the romance of radio itself, and which clearly shows how, for this man of destiny, the man and his destiny were being developed on parallel lines. Interesting glimpses are given of those who were creating the new science in readiness for the Reith era, and fascinating disclosures are made from inside the B.B.C. itself." Light browning to endpapers, light toning to margins of pages, slight separation between some page gatherings (mostly at photograph pages) but still holding firmly, small label from bookstore on front pastedown, some edge wear to boards, wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block, some very faint liquid marks on boards, spine is a slightly darker green than boards

BABAYAGA., Barlow, Toby.
9 Barlow, Toby. BABAYAGA.
New York Farrar, Straus & Giroux 2013 0374107874 / 9780374107871 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good+ Dust jacket art by Matt Buck.
383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy companion, Elga, have been thriving unnoticed amid the bloody froth of Europe's wars. Inspector Vidot is a hardworking Paris police detective who cherishes quiet nights at home. But when he follows a lead from a grisly murder to the warren of a frightened old woman, he undergoes a radical transformation. Oliver is a patrician, fun-loving American who has come to Paris to start a literary journal with the help of some friends, who ask only a few discreet favors in return. When a few of his dodgier acquaintances start dropping dead, he realizes he's in well over his head, though he remains fairly confident that it's nothing a well-made cocktail can't fix. A few chance encounters, a bit of romantic chemistry, a chorus of angry ghosts, a strung-out jazzman or three, a weaponized LSD program, and a cache of rifles buried in the catacombs - those are approximately half the ingredients of 'Babayaga'. But then there's something even more unexpected that Toby Barlow has smuggled in, too: a daring, moving exploration of love and morality." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at bottom of rear hinge, small blank label across barcode.

Then her promising academic career was cut sh o r t w h e n her first real romance led to an unexpected pregnancy and an early marriage. Finally, and much more recently, her stable home life crumbled with her husband's announcement that he was leaving her to move into a commune with his secr et ar y. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Blythe, Ronald, ed.
16 Blythe, Ronald, ed. PRIVATE WORDS: LETTERS AND DIARIES FROM THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Viking, London, 1991, first edition.
310 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0670832049 "The Second World War was, among other things, a great 'reading and writing' war. There was a passion for books of all kinds, and also a remarkable outpouring of personal w riting in the form of letters and diaries. The latter were actually forbidden in the services because they might fall into enemy hands, but this did not prevent them from being kept in startling quantities. The young especially, whether on t h e H o m e Front or fighting abroad, became extraordinary self-examiners and communicators, finding all kinds of outlets for what was happening to them in the shape of private records and correspondence. It was a time when people lived for let t er s, a n d wh en , since much of the war was spent in boredom by the average participant, reading became the perfect escape. The existence of a vast archive of Second World War personal literary expression has been well-known to historians, but i t h as not o ft en bee n used to reveal the significance of the 'reading and writing' culture of this period. Ronald Blythe has a deep understanding of those days and in this collection of letters and journals has revealed much of their heart a nd soul . Half of th e b ook is made up of the wartime writing of his friends; the other half has been drawn from the Department of Documents at the Imperial War Museum. This book is a personal statement that makes eloquent shifts from pain, desp air and de ath t o ab surd ity, lau ghter and bravery. It is a traveller's tale and a stay-at-home's tale. It is politically hopeful and romantic, and also down to earth. Read together, these confessions and descriptions from and to a Britain of nea rly h alf a cen tury ago c reate an a stonishing impact. We see a world holding itself together by language, by words, and with skill and determination. The 'tone' of those days is often quite unbearably caught, with force and eloquence. (T hey c reate) a m ultiple auto biogra phy of a uni que kind." Dust jacket has soft wrinkle at top edge of rear panel. Fine/Near Fine

"(A) brief, but warm and personal account by Edward Booth-Clibborn of the long friendship between his father (known professionally as an artist under the name of Augustin Booth) and Edward Ardizzone. They met as art students, though Augustin was several years older than Edward, and remained lasting friends until Augustin died in 1969. The lasting bond of their friendship is the succession of Christmas cards which Edward and Catherine sent out annually and for which Edward did a special picture each year; these were printed and then posted to special friends." Minor edgewear to boards, slight bumping to corners. Dust jacket has light edgewear, rubbing, wrinkling and very slight sun-fading to spine.
