THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA., Johnstone, Kenneth.
2 Johnstone, Kenneth. THE AQUATIC EXPLORERS: A HISTORY OF THE FISHERIES RESEARCH BOARD OF CANADA.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1977 0802022707 / 9780802022707 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good
342 pp, 10 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1898 a group of scientists, working without pay, often under hazardous conditions with only the most primitive equipment, began a systematic study of the fishes of Canada's inland and marine waters. The team operated under the aegis of a board of management which was later to evolve into the Fisheries Research Board, a scientific organization that has placed Candada among the world's leaders in fishery knowledge. This history of the Fisheries Research Board examines the aims and achievements of its research, its attempts to deal with the often conflicting demands of pure and applied science, and its confrontations with a frequently uncomprehending and dissatisfied government. The people who shaped and sustained the organization figure prominently in the account. In-depth taped interviews with senior members and employees, as well as the Annual Reports and other publications of the Department of Fisheries, have enabled (the author) to produce a rich history of a remarkable scientific organization." Very light wear at top/bottom of spine and at corners.

McClelland and Stewart, Toronto, 1974 reprint.

A fictionalized life of one of the world's great fighting fish. "Below the surface of the Kawartha Lakes is the strange, fierce, forbidding world of eternal conflict for survival. Here is the world of the great game fish, the muskellunge, Ma-Kee. The muskellunge is the fierces, strongest and most voracious of our freshwa ter fish, a king of the water as the lion is king of the jungle. From birth to death, Ma-Kee is surrounded by violence and danger. In infancy, she escapes by a thin fin from becoming a meal for minnows and water beetles, and as her size increases, she in turn becomes a savage hunter: a hunter prized by human hunters - 'Ma-Kee' is not only a book for the ardent fisherman, who enjoys the tug of a powerful tale; it will also find itself in the hands of anyone who cherishes the dramatic yet int imate relationship between animal and man."
