5 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
6 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES., Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.)
9 Birmingham, Kevin. (James Joyce.) THE MOST DANGEROUS BOOK: THE BATTLE FOR JAMES JOYCE'S ULYSSES.
New York Penguin 2014 1594203369 / 9781594203367 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
417 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs. "For more than a decade, the book that literary critics now consider the most important novel in the English language was illegal to own, sell, advertise or purchase in most of the English-speaking world. James Joyce's big blue book, 'Ulysses', ushered in the modernist era and changed the novel for all time. But the genius of 'Ulysses' was also its danger: it omitted absolutely nothing. All of the minutiae of Leopold Bloom's day, including its unspeakable details, unfold with careful precision in its pages. The New York Society for the Suppression of Vice immediately banned the novel as 'obscene, lewd, and lascivious'. Joyce, along with some of the most important publishers and writers of his era, had to fight for years to win the freedom to publish it. (This book) tells the remarkable story surrounding 'Ulysses', from the first stirrings of Joyce's inspiration in 1904 to its landmark federal obscenity trial in 1933." Several soft wrinkles/indentations on free front endpaper - migrate slightly into two other pages, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very tiny tear at bottom of spine, minor edge wrinkling.

University of Alabama Press, Alabama, 1975.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0817371613 B&w illustrations. "It was Millay who captured in verse the freedom, spontaneity, quick wit, and beauty of the pre-1920s as no other poet did. She was a living symbol of the 'new woman' who could live, think, and love as freely as they chose. (This) is a psychological portrait of Millay in her finest years, the ones after she had freed herself of the repression of her childhood and youth and before she accepted th e b o n d s o f a stifling marriage. The four most important influences on Millay's life and art - Floyd Dell, Edmund Wilson, Arthur Davison Ficke, and Eugen Boissevain - are discussed at length in individual chapters. A separate chapter deals b ri e fl y wi th h e r less significant relationships. Dr. Cheney's fascinating study reveals that Millay's concern with and involvement in anti-war protests, women's rights, social injustice, lesbianism, and individual freedom make her not only a rep re sen ta tiv e w oma n of her own time, but very much a woman for our time, too." Stevens & Sons, London, 1951, first edition.
187 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. Presents "a view over the long and varied history of Gray's Inn from the Middle Ages till to-day. For the lover of London and the social historian, no less than for the lawyers, the f ascination of the Inns of Court is irresistible. But this is more than a story of an Inn of Court and its members, or even of its six centuries of change in the shape of our legal system and the ways of the lawyers at study, at work and at p l a y . H ere Gray's Inn, starting as a manor house in the fields outside London, grows and changes as the city reaches out to enclose it. It feels the impact of religious change and civil war. Tudor, Stuart, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian L on do n gr ow up around it. The bombs of two wars devastate it. Yet through every transformation its continuity is unbroken. And the Author demonstrates the essential part which that continuity plays in safeguarding the conception of freedom un der th e rul e o f wa r." WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?, Granatstein, J.L.
20 Granatstein, J.L. WHO KILLED THE CANADIAN MILITARY?
Toronto Phyllis Bruce / HarperFlamingo 2004 0002006758 / 9780002006750 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
250 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). "With tragic helicopter crashes and out-of-date equipment, our military lurches towards irrelevance as our politicians dither. Our personnel are stretched far too thinly and are ill-prepared for the battlefield or increasingly dangerous peacekeeping. In truth, we rank 34th among nations in the provision of UN peacekeeping troops. And since 9/11 and the Iraq War, the United States is seriously re-evaluating our ability to defend our half of North America against terrorism. J.L. Granatstein argues that we are all too willing to hide behind anti-American sentiment, while ignoring the reality that we Canadians have failed our military. Who are the killers of the Canadian army, navy and air force? Granatstein fingers a series of governments since the Second World War who have never understood our military heritage and who have drained military expenditures for years. From Pierre Trudeau to Brian Mulroney to Jean Cretien, (this book) is a catalogue of prime ministers who have never supported adequate military spending. But Granatstein also places blame on ordinary Canadians who have allowed such changes to take place while clinging to the myth that we are the ultimate global peacekeepers. How can we expect the men and women of the Canadian forces to risk their lives for us when we are not prepared to protect and support them in turn?
