In frontier California 130 years ago, English immigrant Eadweard Muybridge managed to capture time and play it back on a screen, inventing stop-motion photography and moving pictures, breakthrough technologies that ushered in our age of visual media. Bankrolling his endeavor was tycoon (and former California governor) Leland Stanford, who built the west half of the transcontinental railroad and personally drove in the last golden spike. Stanford's particular obsession was whether the four hooves of a running horse ever left the ground all at once, and with Muybridge he found an answer. But personal disaster overshadowed Muybridge's remarkable achievements. A visionary artist, and technically brilliant, he was also a murderer." Very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Norman University of Oklahoma Press 1990 0806127317 / 9780806127316 Soft Cover Fine
176 pp, 8 3/6" H. B&w reproductions, maps. "In the summer of 1792, two Spanish schooners, the 'Sutil' and the 'Mexicana', were ordered to inspect the Pacific Coast from Vancouver Island to Monterey. The schooners were commanded by two youthful naval officers, Dionisio Alcala Galiano and Cayetano Valdes. Assisted by their scribe and artist, Jose Cadero, they recorded their efforts to find the so-called Strait of Anian, a Spanish Northwest Passage. The full account, here translated into English, reveals much new information on the indigenous peoples of California, Spanish-Indian relations, and the successes and failures of the Franciscan missionaries. Also included is a vocabulary and catechism of the Carmel Mission Indians missing in earlier editions. In introductory chapters and notes, Donald C. Cutter supplements the authors' observations with a brief history of California and biographical information on the authors, other naval officers, and the soldiers and friars." THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS., Ferlinghetti, Lawrence.
16 Ferlinghetti, Lawrence. THE SECRET MEANING OF THINGS.
New York New Directions 1968 Third Printing Soft Cover Good Signed by Author
48 pp, 7 15/16" H. Signed on half title page: "Ferlinghetti". "(B)rings together six long poems with a certain continuity and progression of vision. The first five poems form a related sequence in which the poet sees 'all too clearly'. In 'Assassination Raga' the 'glass' through which the poet sees darkly is the TV tube, and it was first read on the night of Robert Kennedy's funeral at a mammoth poetry reading in Nourse Auditorium, San Francisco. 'Bickford's Buddha' is a mediation on being afflicted with what the poet calls 'observation fever' - the ultimate vision being that of the 'all-seeing' Buddha. 'All too Clearly' finds a surreal meaning of things in flight. 'Through the Looking Glass' is also an in-flight poem, beginning with an actual flight aboard a commercial airliner and progressing through LSD vision to a final flash of how through everything 'Shiva advances with a broken arm'. 'After the Cries of Birds' is a logical opening-out of that vision into a wide-angle prophecy of the future of the world. 'Moscow in the Wilderness, Segovia in the Snow' is a separate long poem resulting from Ferlinghetti's trip across Russia and Siberia in the Winter of 1967." Interior - tiny bump at top corner of pages, one or two small light stains on inside of rear cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block and to edges of rear cover, an area of light liquid marks on rear cover, very light edge wear, small crease at bottom corner of front cover.

18 Glover, Michael. WELLINGTON'S PENINSULAR VICTORIES: BUSACO - SALAMANCA - VITORIA - NIVELLE. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1963 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Good+
192 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "In the course of the Peninsular War, Wellington became the most celebrated general in British history. When he landed in Lisbon in April 1809, however, there seemed little reason to suppose that the British could maintain their foothold in Portugal, still less to imagine that the French could be driven out of the Peninsula and across the Pyrenees. Since 1793 the British army had experienced a long succession of defeats and reverses. Before Wellington could take the field he had first to overhaul the entire organization of his forces. His allies' troops were ill-led, ill-trained and ill-equipped. His atttempts to co-operate with his Spanish colleagues were stultified by rivalry and distrust. Michael Glover has written a lucid narrative of the difficulties and set-backs of the five years' campaigning that brought the allies to Toulouse in April 1814. Against this background are full-scale accounts of the four battles - Busaco, Salamanca, Vitoria and the Nivelle - in which Wellington defeated his principal opponents of the War - Massena, Marmont, Jourdan and Soult. The officers and men who served in the Peninsula left behind them many absorbing and often moving eyewitness descriptions, and it is on these, no less than on his long acquaintance with the secondary sources of the history of the War, that (he) has based his study of the battles. The numerous illustrations, taken from the supreme period of military art, are themselves of outstanding interest and, with the six maps and plans in the text, complement a perceptive account of Wellington and his army." Light edge wear, previous owner's name stamp on front pastedown, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has browning to the spine and edges, light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small edge tears.
