RHODESIA: THE ROAD TO REBELLION., Barber, James.
1 Barber, James. RHODESIA: THE ROAD TO REBELLION.
Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations, London, 1967, first edition.
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In thi s careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the politi c a l developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." Previous owner's place, date and signature on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at bottom of spine; light edge wear. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear, a few small/tiny tea rs , a few tiny chips, light browning - mainly on inside of spine, some light edge wrinkling. Very Good/Good+

Chicago Quadrangle Books 1968 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
184 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Mr. Bull, editor of the 'Central African Examiner' (one of Salisbury's leading magazines before it ceased publication late in 1965 as a result of rigid censorship by the Rhodesian government), presents the first authoritative explanation of the Rhodesian situation. Most of his book is a factual account of the important political, social, and economic changes in Britain's colony from the first European settlement to the present day (1967), with particular attention to the separate develop-ment of the racial communities. The second part of the book is an assessment of British policy before and after Rhodesia's Universal Declaration, and the likely outcome of the present deadlock." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny faint water mark on top of text block; previous owner's signature, name and date on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has light to moderate wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light fading/browning on spine, very small tear at top of front panel - archivally taped, some light rubbing with color loss on rear panel.

Throughout this fascinating offshore and off-centre island - fr om Cornwall's spectacular Land's End to Scotland's lonely northern outpost of John o' Groats - the dramatic and magnificent story of Britain has always been punctuated by the quirky, the irreverent and the downright dotty. (This book) explor e s e v e r y quirky corner of the nation from the outrageous expose of Dorset's Cerne Abbas giant, outlined in chalk on a green hillside in all its rude glory, to chasing cheeses down helter-skelter hillsides in Cambridgeshire. Farther north thin gs m a y ge t co lder, but they're still crazy with it. There's the highest pub in England at Yorkshire's Tan Hill and a Lake District lighthouse that is miles from the sea. Wales and Scotland are not far behind either when it comes to mad-hatter y. Wh er e els e wou ld you find people eager to submerge themselves for fun in a freezing Welsh bog? And how about Scotland, with a pineapple-shaped house and the world's best worst poet? Organized by area with maps that show the location of ever y b izar re bu ildi ng , pe culiar place and offbeat event and illustrated throughout with superb specially commissioned photography, this book will entertain, enlighten and more than often raise the odd eyebrow."
