3 Barclay, Isabel. SONG OF THE FOREST. INDIAN FOLKTALES RETOLD BY ISABEL BARCLAY.

Unpaginated,10 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The Indians told stories to explain how their world was made; they told stories to preserve their history for themselves and their children; they told stories because there were always those who wanted to listen. Their stories were handed down from generation to generation and in recent times have been collected by anthropologists working among the surviving tribes. The eleven stories retold in this book by Isabel Barclay are all about birds and animals. One or two come from the Prairies and the Pacific Northwest; the rest belong to the people of the eastern woodlands. The illustrations have been taken from a seventeenth-century manuscript in the Public Archives of Canada know as 'Les raretes des Indes'. It is believed to be the work of a young Jesuit, Louis Nicolas, who recorded in these extraordinary and beautiful drawings his impressions of the strange animals who lived in the wilderness to which he had come." THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE., Finch, Robert.
12 Finch, Robert. THE IAMBICS OF NEWFOUNDLAND: NOTES FROM AN UNKNOWN SHORE.
New York Counterpoint 2007 158243154X / 9781582431543 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
270 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "After spending the greater part of a decade traveling around the island of Newfoundland, at 'the edge of North America', beloved nature writer and host of an NPR radio series Robert Finch chronicles the people, geography, and wildlife of this remote and lovely place. From the shear cliffs of Cape Spear overlooking the Atlantic, the beaches of Sandy Cove (about eight miles by road from Squid Tickle), the steep streets of St. John's, and the moss-covered tundra of the southern coast, Finch carefully collects the intimate stories of birds and moose and foxes - and the people who share their space. He evokes an untrammeled landscape of raw beauty even as he tells a tale of economic hardship, with the local cod fisheries deplete and very little industry to replace it. Finch's ear is finely attuned to the vernaclar of Newfoundlander's stories; he revels in the particular cadences and unexpected movement of their tales. With a boundless curiosity, a profound appreciation for the beauty of everyday life and prose as hospitable and full of good humor as the people he encounters, Finch brings alive a wide array of characters - fishermen, hunters and hitchhikers, newcomers and old timers - and an island tucked between provinces, languages, and cultures, a land of ancient hardship and stirring beauty." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine.

13 Heming, Arthur. THE DRAMA OF THE FORESTS: ROMANCE AND ADVENTURE.
Toronto S.B. Gundy 1924 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Good+ No Jacket Arthur Heming.
324 pp, 7 3/4" H. 14 colour plates, including frontispiece (collated). "(I) travelled twenty-three times through various parts of the vast northern woods, between Maine and Alaska, and covered thousands upon thousands of miles by canoe, pack-train, snowshoes, bateau, dog-train, buck-board, timber-raft, prairie-schooner, lumber-wagon, and 'alligator'. (B)ack again I went at all seasons of the year to encamp in that great timber-land that sweeps from the Atlantic to the Pacific. thus it has taken me thirty-three years to gather the information this volume contains - (but) I wish to explain that in compliance with the wishes of the leading actors - who actually lived their parts of this story - fictitious names have been given to the principal characters and to the principal trading posts, lakes, and rivers herein depicted. Furthermore, in order to give the reader a more interesting, complete, and faithful description of the daily and the yearly life of the forest dwellers as I have observed it, I have taken the liberty of weaving together the more interesting facts I have gathered - both first- and second-hand - into one continuous narrative as though it all happened in a single year. And in order to retain all the primitive local colour, the unique costumes, and the fascinating romance of the fur-trade days as I witnessed them in my twenties - though much of the life has already passed away - the scene is set to represent a certain year in the early (1890s)." Separation between some page gatherings (mainly at illustration locations) - pages are firm in binding, very slight bump at top corner of boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor shelf soiling on bottom of text block, three very small stains on top of text block, minor rubbing on boards. Book is protected in a stiff mylar sleeve.

SIXTEEN YEARS IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY: THE JOURNAL OF DANIEL WILLIAMS HARMON, 1800-1816., Lamb, W. Kaye, editor. (Daniel Williams Harmon.)
20 Lamb, W. Kaye, editor. (Daniel Williams Harmon.) SIXTEEN YEARS IN THE INDIAN COUNTRY: THE JOURNAL OF DANIEL WILLIAMS HARMON, 1800-1816.
Toronto Macmillan Company of Canada 1957 Hard Cover Good+ Good- Maps by C.C.J. Bond.
277 pp, 8 3/4" H. Map endpapers, frontispiece, maps. "The Journal of Daniel Williams Harmon is one of the great basic documents of the fur trade and of Canadian exploration. In early corrupt versions it was printed several times but of recent years has become increasingly difficult to obtain. Here for the first time is the authentic text meticulously edited by a foremost authority on Canadiana. The journal begins on April 29, 1800, when Harmon shortly after his twenty-first birthday, 'under an engagement to the North West Coy.' left Lachine for the West in one of thirty canoes, all heavily laden with supplies and bound for the Company's central rendezvous and depot at Grand Portage on Lake Superior It ends on August 18, 1819, at Fort William with the entry: 'I have at length arrived at head quarters. In coming from New Caledonia to this place, which is a distance of at least three thousand miles, nothing uncommon has occurred. A few days hence, I shall leave this place to proceed to Canada. As I have already described the country between this, and Montreal, I shall here conclude my Journal.' Between these two entries are the observations of a man with a sharp and sympathetic eye and a gift for succinct description. His journal is a lively, often exciting, always informative, record of life in the wilderness." Previous owner's name, small fore-edge stain - migrates into first few pages, very light dust soiling on top of text block, light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light bumping to corners, tiny bump to top edge of front board.
