11 Chidsey, Donald Barr. VALLEY FORGE.
Crown, New York, 1959.
190 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "A vividly exciting, on-the-scene account of the most crucial winter of the American Revolution. You accompany the ragged, hungry American troops as they leave Philadelphia to spend the winter at Valley Forge. You struggle up the hill, help clear the underbrush, and fell the trees to build huts and fortifications. You endure the cold and the hunger, the sickness and the boredom, the lack of the most rudimentary convenie nces, and you marvel at the spirit that keeps your fellow Americans from deserting. In contrast, you see the relative luxury of the circumstances enjoyed by the British troops in Philadelphia. Then you see the start of the moves that wil l u l t i m a t e ly result in victory: the near disruption of the British fleet at Philadelphia by the world's first submarine and floating mines; experienced foreign officers joining the American cause; the drilling of troops for effective comba t, an d th e de cl ar at ion of war by France. Finally, you share in the long awaited triumph when camp is disbanded and the American army chases the British across New Jersey...." THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO., Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by.
13 Firth, Edith G., edited and with introduction by. THE TOWN OF YORK 1793-1815: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS OF EARLY TORONTO.
Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1962 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
368 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. "(T)ells the history of the town of York (Toronto) from the arrival of John Graves Simcoe in 1793 through the War of 1812 until news of the peace reached its citizens in the spring of 1815. The selection of contemporary documents attempts to show why York was chosen for a settlement in the first place, the kind of community that developed, and the effect of the War on that community. Apart from the normal problems connected with the establishment of any settlement, the officials of the town of York were faced with the necessity of creating a worthy capital city for Upper Canada at a time when Kingston, because of its pre-eminence as the military and naval centre of the province and its commercial prosperity, overhadowed all other settlements. The book also illustrates the gradual integration into a corporate body of many diverse elements - senior government officials, discharged soldiers, tradesmen, labourers - so that by 1815 the characteristics of modern Toronto were beginning to be evident in York. This collection of documents and the editor's very full Introduction will provide the student of local history with much primary material and the general reader with an interesting account of the early years of the modern metropolis of Toronto. Minor wear at corners, 50% of text block edges are lightly browned. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has one or two tiny edge chips and tears, light edge creases at top of rear panel, light edge wear/wrinkling, very light rubbing.

Castles controlled the countryside around them and provided bases from which squadrons of knights could ride out to attack an enemy. Though battles tend to be remembered they were a dangerous gamble. Henry V won the French c rown not by the famous but rather empty victory of Agincourt, but by the series of sieges which followed." Toronto Ryerson Press 1969 770031668 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
120 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. "Until 1649, this small island of Christianity served as the central residence for the Jesuits in Huronia. Here were established Ontario's first hospital, first school, first farm and first social service centre. Begun in 1639, this community within the wooden palisades, stone bastions and sturdy timber buildings prospered until the Iroquois Indians began their reign of terror in the area. Fearing for the safely of its inhabitants, the administrators of Sainte-Marie put it to the torch and fled to what is now Christian Island to establish Sainte-Marie II. (This book) provides a fascinating account of this missionary endeavour. (Hayes) traces the history of Sainte-Marie from its roots in the arrival of Champlain at Quebec, through the early years of the Huron mission, the building and destruction, the intervening years, the early renewed interest in the site during the last century, archaeological investigation in recent decades and finally the reconstruction. Also included is material on Huron life and customs, the life of the Jesuits, and a tour of the site." Minor edge wear, very small bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small ghost sticker mark at top corner of front panel.

A facsimile of the edition published by John Winston Co., Philadelphia, 1913 - with a new introduction for the Coles Canadiana Collection. "After establishing the physical setting of French Canada and its natural splendor, Hopkins examines and describes the types - religious, social, psychological - who were responsible for the creation of French Canada, and French Canadian society. As themes, Hopkins emphsizes the discoverers Cartier and Champlain, the explorers - fur traders Lasalle, and LaVerendrye, the roles of the Church, the martyrs, the early government administrators. Hopkins' views and sentiments reflected the philosophies of many of his contemporaries, including John A. Macdonald, Wilfrid Laurier and Sir Thomas Chapais. Despite the strong and steady current of Imperial sentiment prevailing, an incipient Canadian nationalism was emerging, fostered by the creation of national heroes, villains and saints."
