2 Adams, Jack. Introduction by Lt.-General Sir Brian Horrocks. THE SOUTH WALES BORDERERS (THE 24tH REGIMENT OF FOOT). FAMOUS REGIMENTS SERIES.
Hamish Hamilton, London, (1968), first edition.
157 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, march. "A Regiment forms a corporate body which takes on a life of its own, often rising above the weaknesses and inadequacies of its human fabric to perform seemingly superhuman deeds such as the 'Immortal Stand' of the 24th Foot at Rorke's Drift during the Zulu War...Since their birth as Dering's Regiment in March 1689, the 24th (which in 1881 became the South Wales Borderers) have participated in nearly all the large and small wars of the past 279 years from Cartagena in South America to Narvik in Arctic Norway. From Saratoga, in America's war of Independence, to Tsingtao in the Far East, where they gained a battle honour unique in the British Army. The Ist Battalion, over which the shadow of amalgamation now lies, has recently returned from an operational tour of Aden. There they proved that the courage and steadfastness of the Regiment and of its individual sons is as strong as ever. This book is a fitting tribute to them and to one of the greatest Regiments of all time." Faint cigarette odor, light browning to edges of pages/textblock, very light paper pull a top of rear endpapers, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price clipped, has very light browning at edges, light edge wrinkling, two very small closed tears, small ghost sticker mark on front flap, very light rubbing. VG/VG-

HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'., Bassett, Ronald.
12 Bassett, Ronald. HMS SHEFFIELD: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF 'OLD SHINY'.
Arms and Armour, London, 1988, first edition.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0853689113 B&w maps and photographs. "The first HMS Sheffield was launched in 1936 to serve her flag bravely for thirty years. During World War Two, the cruiser became one of the mo st illustrious warships of all time, achieving twelve honours. In 1940, she fought in the action off Cape Spartivento; in the following year she shared in the audacious bombardment of Genoa, exchanged salvoes with Bismarck and sank one of that bat t leship's supply tankers, Friedrich Breme. In the Arctic a mine blew a 22-foot hole in her stern, but in an Icelandic fjord her crew fashioned a makeshift timber patch before steaming her back to Britain to fight again. In 1942, in the Barents Se a, Sheffield was in action against the 'pocket battleships' Admiral Hipper and Lutzow, and sank the German destroyer Friedrich Eckoldt. In 1943 she shared in the destruction of the battlecruiser Scharnhorst off North Cape and later supported carri er attacks upon Tirpitz. These, however, were but the highlights of this distinguished ship's wartime service. This book tells the story of her entire life and of her crews before, during and after World War Two - not from the detached perspective of an 'armchair historian', but from that of a writer who served at that time in a similar cruiser. Ronald Bassett was entrusted with research material accumulated over many years by an officer of Sheffield who died before those records could be turn ed into a book. Hundreds of her crew members, including several of her commanding officers, have contributed to this chronicle by means of their memoirs, diaries, letters, newspaper cuttings and photographs, enabling (the author) to paint an a ccura te and powerfully evocative portrait of a famous ship." Slight bump at bottom of spine, slight waviness to edges of text block, previous owner's label on free front endpaper, book cracked in several palces but page signatures are holding firm ly. D ust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, several small edge tears (two taped) and chips, light rubbing with some slight color loss on rear panel. Very Good-/Good+

14 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

158 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850520290 B&w photographs, reproductions, music to Regimental March. Errata sheet tipped in on half-title page. "Since their formation in the mid-eighteenth century the 43rd and 52nd Regim ents of Foot have had a variety of changes in title, achieving in 1908 the name by which they will always be remembered, that of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, although the old cherished numbers, by which the regiments w e r e k n o w n before the Cardwell Reforms, have always b een unofficially used by the regular battalions. In 1803 they were the first regiments to become light infantry in Sir John Moore's Light Brigade, and achieved further fame in the Penins ul ar W ar as p ar t of Craufurd's Light Division. Perhaps the 52 nd's most famous success was at Waterloo, when, under Sir John Colborne's skilful handling, they made the famous charge which carried the day for the allies. With customary skill an d c our age suc cee din g generations in the Regiment lived up to their illustrious predecessors, particularly in the First and Second World Wars; their stand on the Somme in 1918 against the full weight of the German army, and their part in th e gl ider -bor ne l a ndin gs a t D- Da y are only two examples of the fighting skill which has made this regiment famous. Together with the 60th Rifles and the Rifle Brigade they are now part of the Royal Green Jackets - indeed a happy issue out o f the affl ictio n of po st wa r org anisa tio n." At seventeen, he shot his first man; at eighteen he hunted a double-murderer across the velds of Rhodesia. By the time he was twenty-four he had fought (and was twice wounded) at ill-fated Gallipoli and o n t h e w estern front through the Great War of 1914-19. Excitement dogged his footsteps as he sailed round the Horn in a windjammer; fought in a Brazilian revolution; crossed the Andes on foot; was nearly killed in a stampede of wild cattle; and w a s th e s ol e survivor of a gold-seeking hunt in the Amazon. Back in England, jobless, he did a stint as a reporter on a gossip 'sheet'; became a stunt actor, then press agent, in the movies; and in 1938, on the continent, established an under gro un d for J ew s f leeing from Hitler's persecution, subsequently himself falling into the hands of the Gestapo. At Dunkirk in World War II, Sir Michael ferried British soldiers across the Channel, then got into the RAF - and into more hair-rai sing in ci dent s.. .."
