MERE ANARCHY., Allen, Woody.
1 Allen, Woody. MERE ANARCHY.
Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." "Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II., Bacque, James.
5 Bacque, James. OTHER LOSSES: AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE MASS DEATHS OF GERMAN PRISONERS AT THE HANDS OF THE FRENCH AND AMERICANS AFTER WORLD WAR II.
Toronto Stoddart 1989 0773722696 / 9780773722699 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
248 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs and drawings. "In the U.S. Army prison camps of western Germany at the end of World War II, almost four million German soldiers were held prisoner outdoors, in barbed-wire enclosures, with little or no food and water, for many months. The French Army, which took some 630,000 prisoners from the Americans to use as reparations labor, starved and mistreated them so badly that likely 250,000 died. In the American camps, at least 750,000 died. Most were soldiers of the Wehrmacht who surrendered on May 8, 1945, but many scores of thousands were women, children and old men. The deaths were simply listed as 'OTHER LOSSES". In painstaking, wide-ranging research, the author has interviewed hundreds of prisoners, guards and army officers and has amassed many thousands of pages of evidence from Army archives in Paris, Koblenz, London, Washington and Ottawa. He was ably assisted by senior U.S. Army historian Col. Ernest F. Fisher. How the public was fooled, the U.S. State Department co-opted, the International Committee of the Red Cross deceived, the press negated, the U.S. Senate neutered, books censored, archives destroyed and senior officials inveigled into the coverup - all this is outlined in a work that destroys the genial myths about Allied war aims and exposes the sources of cynical Cold War propaganda that blamed the Russians for all the deaths among these prisoners." Slight bump at top of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light browning at top/bottom edges of flaps, very light rubbing, tiny scuff on front panel.

If you can accept this fact both your love-life and your cooking will improve immeasurably. This is a book for people who cook with love and enjoyment, for people who want to leave drudgery out of the kitchen. It tells you in cartoons and words how to prepare food (maximum time for most things thirty minutes), how to eat it, and even what to do while you're waiting for it to cook. Anybody can be a good cook. 'All this idiocy that makes good food the specialty of gourmet clubs', says the author, 'is just another aspect of snobbery. Nice dishes and tablecloths are great but they are not essential. What is essential is a loose and happy approach to the stove'. You may never be called a gourmet if you follow this book, but you will get to be called a hell of a good cook." Bump at top of spine - migrates int o text block, small bump at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear and rubbing, light edge wrinkling, a few tiny/small edge tears - some with creases.

Hurtig, Edmonton, (1984).
384 pp, 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0888302622 B&w photos, maps, drawings. "(T)ells us about the Metis, who simply wanted the long-standing boundaries of their river-lot farms respected by the government as Ottawa divided up the land to sell it to homesteaders. It tells about the Indians, whose land had been sold by the government and tradition and self-support destroyed, and who were now literally starving while the government broke its promises or tried to tie them to concessions. It tells us of local government officials, who could not agree among themselves whether the Indians should be treated with discipline or with food. It tells us about the frightened settlers and townspeople, caught between the Indians and Metis they often sympathized with and the government they looked to for support. And it tells about the soldiers, who heroically set out to quell a rebellion, but whose greatest ordeal was the long train journey on which they were beset by freezing cold and extreme shortages of food." THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
11 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

Princeton University Press, Princeton, New Jersey, (1975).
290 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "....draws on the remarkably complete records of the British government offices concerned with logistics during the Revolutionary War and army service departments such as commissary, quartermaster and barrackmaster generals to provide a full account of the everyday life of the British army and an accurate record of how logistical and administrative problems in America affected the course of the war. His study makes it clear that the British army in America depended almost entirely on Britain for supplies, and that for six years inadequate and sometimes corrupt administration seriously affected the course of operations and the morale of the troops. An organization capable of supplying the army was not developed until 1781, too late to change the outcome of the war." New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 20 Cole, Jean Murray. EXILE IN THE WILDERNESS: THE BIOGRAPHY OF CHIEF FACTOR ARCHIBALD McDONALD, 1790-1853.
Don Mills, Ontario Burns & MacEachern 1979 0887680844 / 9780887680847 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
268 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "At the age of twenty-two, Archibald McDonald was responsible for the health and well-being of all ninety-four members of the 1813 party of Lord Selkirk's ill-fated Red River settlement. (He) responded to this heavy burden as he did to all the other difficulties that he experienced in his life as adminstrator and fur trader in the days of the Red River settlement and the early history of the Pacific Northwest - with an engaging combination of practicality, good humor, and hard work. Drawing extensively from McDonald's letters, reports, and diaries, (the author) lets the subject of this biography tell his own story: of the enmity between the Red River settlers and the violent, vindictive Nor-Westers, who were determined to destroy the Red River colony; of his years of service in the Hudson's Bay Company, where he became commander of forts on the Lower Fraser and Columbia Rivers; and of the long canoe voyages through the untamed Canadian wilderness." Dust jacket has one small edge tear archivally taped, minor edge wear/wrinkling, tiny scuff at top of rear hinge.
