THE GOLD CRUSADES: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF GOLD RUSHES, 1849-1929., Fetherling, Douglas.
4 Fetherling, Douglas. THE GOLD CRUSADES: A SOCIAL HISTORY OF GOLD RUSHES, 1849-1929.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1988 071592876 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good-
(259) pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The first great international gold rush began in 1849 after news about spectacular discoveries in California leaked out to the rest of the world, setting off one of the largest peace-time migrations in history. The final one, using dog-teams as well as aircraft, took place in the wilderness of northwestern Ontario in the Roaring Twenties, when corporate manoeuvring had nearly eclipsed the fierce individualism so central to the idea of the gold rush. The period saw every type of person - saints and charlatans, nobles and peasants, plutocrats and radicals, Asians, Blacks and Europeans - racing off to the Rocky Mountains, Australia, South Africa or Alaska and the Yukon. As they gained cumulative force, the gold rushes produced certain stock characters: the happy-go-lucky millionaire, the golden-hearted prostitute, the aging veteran of some previous frontier search for one final fling. In every instance, the gold rush was not merely an anarchic type of economic development but a signal and informing event in the history of the host country. In nearly all cases, there was great tension between the forces of authority on the one hand and the miners' instinctual libertarianism on the other. Often the result was violence - followed by reform. (This book) throws new light on a popular subject and ties part of one country's history and folkore to that of the others." Small bump at each corner of boards, slight bump at top of spine, very light browning at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has wrinkling and light wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, two tiny edge tears archivally taped.

London Hamlyn 1980 0600363651 / 9780600363651 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good+
176 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Judaism, has flourished for millennia in a myriad of environments; each has contributed something to the Jewish tradition. Far from being a religion ossified in the world of the Bible; it has produced countless legends and stories, built up on Bible inspiration but reflecting the ideas of the cultures within which they emerged. (This book) explores the core of the Jewish faith by retelling the stories made up and told by Jews throughout the world. The author develops essential ideas of Judaism, including the creation of the universe, the history of man, the history of Israel and the future of Israel. He retells the familiar Biblical stories surrounding the great Biblical personalities such as Abraham, Moses and Elijah. He then goes on to show how their ideas and their characters were developed in the legends and folklore surrounding the Torah, and elaborated throughout the rabbinical tradition. With its great variety of stories told in clear and simple style, written for Jew and Gentile alike, (it) provides a fascinating insight into the wealth and vitality of Judaism." 7 Grossman, David. Translated from the Hebrew by Stuart Schoffman. LION'S HONEY: THE MYTH OF SAMSON.
Toronto Alfred A. Knopf Canada 2006 067697421X / 9780676974218 First Canadian Edition. Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
155 pp, 8" H. Volume V of the 'Myths Series'. "Samson the hero: a brave warrior, leader of men and Nazarite of God? Or a misfit given to whoring and lust, who failed to fulfill his destiny? In 'Lion's Honey', award-winning writer David Grossman takes on one of the most vivid and controversial characters in the Bible. Revisiting Samson's famous battle with the lion, his many women and his betrayal by them all - including the only one he ever loved - Grossman gives us a provocative new take on the story and its climax, Samson's final act of death, bringing down a temple on himself and three thousand Philistines. In exhilarating and lucid prose, Grossman reveals the journey of a single lonely and tortured soul who never found a true home in the world, who was uncomfortable in his very body and who, some might say, was the precursor of today's suicide bombers." Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE., Keightley, Thomas.
12 Keightley, Thomas. THE WORLD GUIDE TO GNOMES, FAIRIES, ELVES AND OTHER LITTLE PEOPLE.
New York Avenel 1978 0517263130 / 9780517263136 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
560 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). B&w illustrations. First Avenel reprinting of the 1878 G. Bell edition. "Kelpies, Korrigans, Pixies and Peries, Deeves, Brownies, and Bugaboos - these are just a few of the fantastic figures you will encounter in this unique collection of fairy mythology. Gnomes, faries, and elves of every imaginable size, shape, color, and demeanor spring to life in this marvelously illustrated guide to the fairy realm. Just one glance at the extensive table of contents reveals the scope and variety of fairy folklore explored here - from Persian and Arabian romance to the mythology of Scandinavia, England, France, Germany, and Switzerland. In addition, the author includes sections dealing with the more obscure fairy folkore and tradition of Greece, Spain, Italy, Africa, and the Middle East. Indeed, (he) has left no stone unturned in accomplishing the task he set for himself: 'to collect, arrange and classify and give under one point of view the various ideas and legends respecting fairies and similar beings of the popular creed.' Taken from a variety of sources of popular myth and legend, (it) forms a rich compendium of the superstitions surrounding those enchanting lesser deities, 'the little people'. Not only does (he) explore every type and species, but he also traces resemblances and similarities among the fairy traditions of different countries. For instance, did you know that the Nis (Scandianavia), the Kobold (Germany), and the Goblin (England) are all names for one species, which appears in Scotland under the name of Brownie, and that the Brownie is a person of small stature and wrinkled visage, is covered with short and curly brown hair, and wears a brown mantle and hood? In addition, Keightley discusses the fairy tradition as it appears in major works of English literature, from the Middle Age epic of 'Beowulf' and Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales' to Spencer's 'The Faerie Queene' and Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'." Light wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two repaired small tears at top of spine. 17 Spence, Lewis. SPAIN. MYTHS AND LEGENDS SERIES.
London Bracken Books 1986 185170017X / 9781851700172 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Otway McCannell.
405 pp, 8 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "Lewis Spence provides a detailed and enthralling guide to (Spain's) great legends, discussing the source of romances and romanceros, debating the Moorish influences upon them, and then taking the reader into the tales themselves. Folkore plays a relatively small part; Spain's chivalric fictions are usually the offspring of historic happenings or of that brilliant and glowing imagination that illuminates the whole expanse of Peninsular literature. As the 'chansons de gestes' spread south across the Pyrennes, the themes of noble valour and courtly love were adapted to native heroes - Bernaldo de Carpio, champion of Castile, and the Cid, with his famous sword, Colada. These and other stories will be found in the pages of this book, together with the Moorish romances, including 'The Arabian Astrologer' and 'The Three Beautiful Princesses'. The author concludes with a selection of humorous romances - including 'Don Quixote', and also such less well known tales as 'Lazarillo de Tormes' and 'Guzman de Alfarache'." Minor wear at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

TALES OF THE PUNJAB: FOLKORE OF INDIA., Steel, Flora Annie. Notes by R.C. Temple. Foreword by Patricia Barrett Perkins.
18 Steel, Flora Annie. Notes by R.C. Temple. Foreword by Patricia Barrett Perkins. TALES OF THE PUNJAB: FOLKORE OF INDIA.
New York Greenwich House 1983 0517425874 / 9780517425879 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good- Good- J. Lockwood Kipling.
326 pp, 8 3/16" H. B &w illustrations. Originally printed in 1894. "At the turn of the (20th) century, Flora Annie Steel traveled through India, and spending countless hours, listened to the village storytellers and gathered their tales together into this brilliant and definitive collection, sifting and carefully selecting the most vivid stories in their best form, but not doctoring them in any way, not even in the language. She preserved the rough, ready wit, their drama, poetry, and humanity. In addition, J. Lockwood Kipling (Rudyard Kipling's father) designed a host of ingenious and charming illustrations to accompany them, full of the flavor of India. And R.C. Temple prepared notes that give a thorough background for the tales and define certain unfamiliar words. Here are tales of wizards and princes, of serpents and talking beasts, of enchantments, temporary deaths, and restoration of lost limbs. But underneath it all, we recognize the universal evils and timeless values of mankind: jealousy is a constant motive and reason for deadly assault, but beauty, truth, and honor conquer evil in the end. In these stories, the devotee of folklore will find a wealth of material to dissect; the parent, a wealth of bedtime stories; and all readers will find entertainment as delightful and exciting as any by the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, or Aesop, but with its own unique Indian character and setting." Light to moderate edge wear, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, some areas of light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has chips, tears (archivally taped) and creases - mainly at top edge, light edge wear elsewhere, minor edge browning, soft wrinkles on front panel, protected in mylar sleeve.
