MOSQUITO AT WAR., Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken.
4 Bowyer, Chaz. Foreword by Max Aitken. MOSQUITO AT WAR.
Ian Allan, London, 1989, reprint.
144 pp, 11 1/4" H, hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711004749 "From the outset the Mosquito was a daring concept. That an unarmed bomber, constructed almost wholly of wood and relying on pure speed, could evade the immensely powerful air defences of Nazi Germany by night, let alone by day, was completely against contemporary Air Force thinking and war experience. The result was an aircraft which became the most successful fighter and bomber of World War II. Extreme versatility led to i t s use in a wide range of operational roles - day and night bomber, night fighter, intruder, Pathfinder, shipbuster, bomber support, reconnaissance and a dozen others. Mosquitos served too in practically every theatre of war from Britain to Bur ma . I n this book the author has recaptured the unique appeal of the Mosquito to the fighting airmen of World War II and the high spirits and elan that distinguished Mosquito Squadrons everywhere. First-hand accounts of operations by the men who fl ew th e aircraft are illuminated by a remarkable collection of over 200 photographs. They depict the Mosquito in all its various guises and roles. They show, too, the patient, painstaking and frequently hazardous work of the ground crews who, for th eir pa rt, also shared in the Mosquito spirit." Book is cocked, very small tear (archivally taped) with crease at top of rear free endpaper. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor wear/light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and fla p-fol ds, ligh t r ubbing. Very Good/Very Good

London Jonathan Cape Hard Cover
Han Suyin (1916-2012), daughter of a Chinese father and Belgium mother, was born Rosalie Matilda Kuanghu Chow and is perhaps best known for her novel "A Many-Splendoured Thing", basis for the movie, "Love is a Many-Splendored Thing". These are the first three volumes of her autobiography, tracing her family history from 1885, then her own story up to 1948. (Two later volumes, covering the years 1949-1991 are not included here.) All are in dust jackets, have pictorial endpapers, b&w photo-graphs & map, 8 3/4" H. 1. The Crippled Tree - 461 pp, 1970 reprint, ISBN 0224610058. "Han Suyin evokes, through the life of her two families (eastern and western), a panorama of the history of China from 1885 to 1928. It contains eyewitness accounts, from family papers, of the Sino-French War, of the revolution of 1911 and of the emergence of Chiang Kai-shek." 2. A Mortal Flower - 413 pp, 1966 first edition. "(Covers) the decade from 1928 to 1938, when Chiang Kai-shek rose to power and Mao Tsetung in his mountain fastness gathered the spent remnants of an almost destroyed communist army and rebuilt it as a force. The Japanese invasion, the Long March, the Student Revolt of 1936 - all these happened in China while Hitler and Mussolini hypnotized Europe with their preparations for war." 3. Birdless Summer - 347 pp, 1968 first edition, ISBN 224614711. "The events of Chinese history between 1938 and 1948 are vividly reconstructed (here). The story of Han Suyin's unhappy marriage to a fanatical army officer is told against the background of the appalling confusion and corruption of China at that time: the Japanese invasion, the misery and squalor of the retreating Chinese, the activi-ties of Chiang Kai-shek and his 'Blueshirts', the violent prelude to revolution. (Her) narrative is not merely the affecting and extraordinary lfie of a woman of immense courage. In the way that it brings to life more powerfully than ever before the spirit and politics of China, it is a significant contribution to the history of our time." 13 Haworth, Christopher. MARCH TO ARMISTICE, 1918.
William Kimber, London, 1968, first edition.
172 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photogarphs, maps. "Christopher Haworth went to the front near Ypres in 1918: an apprentice law writer of just nineteen, full of idealism and perhaps a little priggish. He became a good soldier, though not in the way of the Regular Army; he missed the slogging disillusion of First and Second Ypres, the Battles of the Aisne and Somme. He was typical of the new, amateur army which was needed to replace the flower of the R e g u l a r A r m y who had held the initial German advances in 1914-15. This is a personal, highly individual account of those last epic months of the Great War and from it emerges some idea of that unwarlike, unexpected quality which thwarted th e pl an s of L u de nd or ff and brought us final victory on the Western Front...." Two creases down free front endpaper, wrinkling at bottom of spine - minor wrinkling at toptiny faint stain on top of textblock. 331 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w and colour illustrations. "Osgoode Hall is a national monument and one of Canada's architectural treasures. Of the many public buildings erected in pre-Confederation Canada, it best encapsulates the diverse stylistic forces that shaped public buildings of its era. The gated lawns, the grandly Venetian rotunda, the ornate courtroom, the portrait-lined walls, and the stained-glass windows evoke a venerable dignity to which few Canadian institutions can aspire. It has been the seat of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1832 and of several of the Superior Courts of the province for almost as long. It has become a symbol of the legal tradition, not only in Ontario, but throughout Canada and beyond." Small gift notation on verso of free front endpaper. On the return trip, the escorts bring back the empty ships for reloading. As told in the words of the veterans, the routines of life aboard a corvette are punctuated by sudden bursts of fierce action - the life-and-death moments for warships, merchant ships and German submarines. This was but one enemy - the other was the North Atlantic itself, a powerful force that brought severe cold, icy storms and fierce gales. In addition to the famous Newfie-Derry Run on the North Atlantic, corvettes also saw duty in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, on the Triangle Run to New York and Boston, in the Caribbean, in the Mediterranean and in the English Channel, as well as the Pacific Ocean." 20 Macintyre, Donald. THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC. BRITISH BATTLE SERIES.
London B. T. Batsford 1961 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
208 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H). "The momentous nature of the Battle of the Atlantic, a struggle whose outcome was in the balance for over three years, cannot be exaggerated. Had the Germans succeeded in establishing a decisive mastery in the Atlantic, Britain would have been deprived of the essential American supplies - above all, arms and food - on which she depended for the continuance of the war abroad and for her own day-to-day survival; nor, later could the Americans have given their vital support. The story of how, instead, the Germans were defeated in the Atlantic, is a complicated and exciting one which Captain Donald Macintyre, a naval historian who himself played an active part in the battle, is well qualified to tell. Not only does he analyse the strategic issues, above all the importance of the convoy system and of continuous air-cover, he also describes the battle from the viewpoint of the participants themselves. The long drawn-out duel between escort and U-boat is made vivid by quotations from the log-books of some of the ablest escort-commanders, such as Captain Walker and Lieutenant-Commander Gretton, and from the combat-reports of the German U-boat 'aces', Prien, Kretschmer and Schepke.
