London J.M. Dent & Sons 1930 Revised and Enlarged Edition. Hard Cover Good Very Good
242 pp, 6 13/16" H. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 8 plates depicting coins. "The transformation, bit by bit, of a wilderness into the category of a Europeanized civilization may be comprehended from a series of maps which shows the ever advancing line of settlement as it first gnawed away the forests of the sea coast, and then after trickling through mountain passes, seeped across the plains to be stopped finally by the Pacific Ocean. Waterways, roads, and more recently, the railroads, have contributed to the movement of the past towards the fulfilment of the present. The following maps portray the expanding movements of new nations as two continents were wrested from a wilderness. The coloured maps locate states, towns, waterways, advancing frontiers, routes of travel, population densities, and industries. The black and white maps, besides those showing battle alignments and military campaigns, contain many specimens of early maps with their quaint antiquarian charm." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinage of North and South America" by G.C. Brooke, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in America having a Literary or Historic Interest", "Contributions to the Literature of the United States" and an Index. Book is lightly cocked, light browning to edges of text block, light edge wear, very small old ink mark on bottom of text block, rubbing with slight color loss on covers, cloth is split on hinges - repaired, small edge tear on free front endaper - archivally taped. 4 Buker, George E. SWAMP SAILORS: RIVERINE WARFARE IN THE EVERGLADES 1835-1842.
University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." 6 Byrd, Richard Evelyn. Foreword by Rear Admiral William A. Moffett. SKYWARD: MAN'S MASTERY OF THE AIR AS SHOWN BY THE BRILLIANT FLIGHTS OF AMERICA'S LEADING AIR EXPLORER. HIS LIFE, HIS THRILLING ADVENTURES, HIS NORTH POLE AND TRANS-ATLANTIC FLIGHTS, TOGETHER WITH HIS PLANS FOR CONQUERING THE ANTARCTIC BY AIR.
New York G.P. Putnam's Sons 1928 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Poor
359 pp, 8 3/4" H. Bright blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine and front board, top edge blue. Map endpapers, b&w photographs and photogravure frontispiece portrait of author (only the first printings contain this). "Almost since he could toddle Byrd has been an adventurer. At the age of twelve he travelled around the world alone. At Annapolis he was an athlete of note. In his seafaring years that followed he was cited twenty-one times, including the Congressional Medal of Honor. He went to England to help fly the ill-fated ZR-2 to America. He was assigned to the transatlantic flight of the Navy's NC boats in 1921. As flight leader with the National Geographical Arctic Expedition in 1923 he and his plane flew 6000 miles over the icy deserts of the north. On May 9th, 1926, he and Floyd Bennett circled the North Pole for the first time by air. In June, 1927, after forty-two terrible hours in the air he crossed the Atlantic from New York to France. Now the South Pole! With ships and scientists, planes and sledges, and his old pilot Bennett, he determines next winter to enter this facinating realm. Full of action and adventure as it is, Byrd's story does not fall into the class of simple biographical yarns. Using the stark reality of his recurring enterprises as a background he paints a splendid picture of man's struggle to conquer the air and of the grand victory of human ingenuity over gravity that has sprung in a brief span of twenty-five years from centuries of despairing effort. And finally, because Byrd is an idealist as well as a rugged explorer, he projects his flying aspirations into the future." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, light edge wear, slight fading to spine color, previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has large chips/tears, edge creasing/wrinkling, rubbing, creasing on front panel, now protected in a mylar sleeve.

"Heriot went to Quebec in 1792 as a civil servant and became deputy postmaster general of Canada in 1799. Until 1816 he remained in Canada, travelling at least as far west as Niagara Falls, perhaps Detroit, and to some extent in the United States, sketching along the way. His legacy - his water-colors and this book, an unsurpassed intimate history of 'the lakes, the rivers, and cataracts, the villages, farm-houses, and townships of Canada'. Although British reviewers of the day were unimpressed by richly detailed descriptions of a mere colony, the extent and precision of Heriot's account is a virtue one hundred and sixty years later. He wrote at length of each of the major waterways in Upper and Lower Canada which were, as James Talman points out in his introduction, 'of first importance in the life of the people as a means of travel and a source of water power'. And his sketches of buildings, particularly in Quebec, are invaluable since many of those buildings were already falling into ruin when Heriot saw them." Very minor wrinkling at top og spine. 406 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Marcus Garvey, George Padmore, Richard B. Moore, Amy Jacques Garvey, Cyril Briggs, Claude McKay, Claudia Jones, C.L.R. James, Stokely Carmichael - the roster of immigrants from the Carribean who have made a profound impact on the development of radical politics in the United States is extensive. In this magisterial and lavishly illustrated work, Winston James focuses on the twentieth century's first waves of migrants from the Caribbean and their contribution to political dissidence in America. Examining how the characteristics of the societies they left shaped their perceptions of the land to which they traveled, James draws sharp distinctions between Hispanic, Anglophone, and other non-Hispanic arrivals. He explores the interconnections between the Cuban independence struggle, Puerto Rican nationalism, Afro-American feminism, and black communism in the first turbulent decades of the twentieth century. He also provides fascinating insights into the peculiarities of Puerto Rican radicalism's impact in New York City and recounts the remarkable story of Afro-Cuban radicalism in Florida." 20 Jencks, Charles, essays by. (Robert Stern.) ROBERT AM STERN: SELECTED WORKS. ARCHITECTURAL MONOGRAPHS NO 17.
Academy Editions, (London, 1991).
144 pp, 4to (12" H), soft cover with self-flaps. Profusely illustrated in color and b&w with photos, drawings, plans, elevations. "Robert Stern's work as an architect is indivisible from his abiding concern with history and historical style. He regards Post-Modernism not as a random recycling of past styles, but as a necessary liberation from what he calls the 'perennial present' of the Modern Movement. In the four essays reproduced in this Monograph he urges contemporary architects to widen their vocabulary, to learn from the past in order to 'reunite current production with the traditions that a previous generation tried so hard to subvert'. The 33 projects featured here reveal the range of influences which have in formed Robert Stern's projects and buildings: from the Lutyens and Kahn inspired Lang and Westchester houses of the early 70s to later 'Shingle Style' solution such as the Lawson and Marblehead residences.
