202 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0709046049 "The ward settles down for a quiet night. A serene, starched nurse soothes the brow of a grateful patient as the lamplight flickers. Bleep! Cardiac arrest! The crash team lea ps into action, skidding along the corridors, etiquette abandoned in the vital race against time. It is in these frantic seconds that a sister, weighing her responsibilities and priorities, must make efficient, professional decisions - deci s i o n s w h ich could mean the difference between life and death. In her autobiography, Joan Ash contrasts her wartime nursing experiences in India with the National Health Service as she found it on her return in 1973. She shows us the day-to- da y fr us tr a ti on s and joys of nursing, the individuals that people the wards, and the resilient dedication of these latter-day Florence Nightingales." book slightly cocked. When a distant, elderly relative arrived from Italy to settle her uncle's estate, Maria suddenly found herself with a new guardian and a new home in a foreign land. At first she hated Italy, where it always seemed to rain, but when she arrived at her relative's villa outside of Florence and met the energetic Cordelia, the situation began to change at once. If it had not been for Cordelia, Maria would never have ventured beyond the garden of the villa and then she would never have visited the little town at the foot of the hill, nor would she have ever seen the wonderful painting that was to mean so much..." 3 Bamfield, Veronica. ON THE STRENGTH: THE STORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY WIFE.
London Charles Knight 1974 0853142319 / 9780853142317 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career." Very light browning to pages, very small foxing mark in margin of page 87, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, light browning to top inside edge, light to moderate fading to spine color - lettering still very legible, very small area of surface paper loss and a small ghost sticker mark at bottom of front flap.

191 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0901627224 Monotone drawings by Charles Freeman, b&w photographs, maps. "The author's experiences as a platoon commander in the Second World War were shared by many others but few published accounts capture so faithfully the particular flavour of that conflict or the impact of battle on the individual soldier. Norman Craig was a conscript, commissioned after a year in the ranks. He served in three infantry regiments: the Welch in the United Kingdom; the Royal Sussex in the Western Desert, and Iraq and Persia; and the East Surreys in Italy. He saw action at El Alamein and in northern Italy where, only a fortnight before the end of the war in Europe, he was wounded. B e t w e e n t h e se spells of fighting he was concerned with the routine of soldiering - training, parades, courses, inspections and regimental chores - which occupied the greater part of of a subaltern's time. Norman Craig writes perceptively an d wi th u nu su a l ca nd our about his war service. His book is both a personal record of considerable human interest and a significant addition to the literature of the Second World War." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. She was everywhere, attending costume balls, visiting an aging Sir John A. Macdonald, interviewing the fiery suffragette Susan B. Anthony, covering sensational murder trials. 13 Fisher, Margery. WHO'S WHO IN CHILDREN'S BOOKS: A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR CHARACTERS OF CHILDHOOD.
New York Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1975 0030150914 / 9780030150913 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Various.
399 pp, 10" H. Pictorial endpapers, profusely illustrated throughout with b&w drawings and colour plates. "Who does not have vivid memories of characters from the books of childhood? Alice in Wonderland, Brer Rabbit, Dr Dolittle, Paddington Bear, the Railway Children, Winnie the Pooh, Tom Sawyer - the list is endless. Many names are so familiar - favourites from generation to generation - that they need no repeating; others are half forgotten; some may be almost unknown. This book is for everyone who wishes to recapture those memories and to find fresh inspiration for reading. It is a personal collection of characters from the world of children's fiction, by an author widely known and respected for her extensive knowledge on the subject. Entries include not only human characters but humanized or personalized animals, toys and vehicles, fairy and folk tale characters. The distinctive qualities of each are evoked in the writing - their appearance, mannerisms, speech, details of background, their role within the story - so that the reader recaptures or is introduced to the essential personality of the character concerned. From Margery Fisher's pertinent critical comments one is given an indication of the quality and status of the book in question. Approximately 400 illustrations accompany the text, showing not only the well-known representations of the characters, but title pages, authors' photographs, and scenes from film treatments. This is an invaluable treasury in which to look up characters from children's books, trace where they appeared, find their authors and first publication dates. It will inspire enthusiasm to read books not previously known and can be read by anyone for pure enjoyment." Minor edge wear, minor wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's name and date on half-title page. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, tiny dent on spine.

CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO., Gibbs, Peter.
14 Gibbs, Peter. CRIMEAN BLUNDER: THE STORY OF WAR WITH RUSSIA A HUNDRED YEARS AGO.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1960, first American edition.
297 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The Crimean War was a little war, a seemingly unimportant war which England entered - as Trevelyan wrote - for no better reason than that she was bored with pe ace. When, in 1854, the London crowds saw their soldiers marching off to fight, they cheered with delight. The war against Russia, into which Britain and France had drifted in alliance with Turkey - and which had grown out of a petty quarre l b e t w e en some monks in Jerusalem - was to be a lighthearted and glorious adventure. True, the Crimean was a war to capture only one town. Nonetheless the suffering was appalling and 300,000 lives were lost. It was in the Crimean War that t he te le gr ap h was first used to apprise statemen at home of events at the front. It was then that Florence Nightingale, horrified by the unnecessary waste of life and by the inhumanity of the treatment of the troops, organized the nursing servi ce t hat wa s t o m ak e history. It was, in fact, Crimea that finally ended the myth that war had glamor. In (this book, the author) tells the full story of this strange conflict, how the errors and blunders and optimism on the part of Palmersto n a nd Que en V icto ria, Lo uis Napoleon and Tsar Nicholas developed into a nightmare. Here is the story of the fantastic, gallant and infamous Charge of the Light Brigade, but here also is the unforgettable drama of the ordinary soldier - Briti sh, Fre nch, Russi an an d Tur kish - who fought steadfastly on, though sacrificed again and again by the stupidity of his commanders." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clip ped, has very small chip/ tears with moderate wear at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds - light edge wear elsewhere, light fading to spine color, some light browning, minor soiling. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55., Hibbert, Christopher.
15 Hibbert, Christopher. THE DESTRUCTION OF LORD RAGLAN: A TRAGEDY OF THE CRIMEAN WAR 1854-55.
Harmondsworth Viking 1984 0670800007 / 9780670800001 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
337 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w maps, photographs. "In March 1954 an army of 30,000 men sailed from Portsmouth to the Crimea to defend the crumbling Turkish empire against invasion by Russia. Led by Lord Raglan, a veteran of Waterloo but, after forty years, out of touch with the realities of warfare, they embarked for an unknown country to defend a cause few understood or even cared about. Nevertheless enthusiasm and confidence were high among the men of what 'The Times' described as 'the finest army that has ever left these shores'. The euphoria was short-lived and the campaign quickly degenerated into a series of humiliating military disasters caused largely by incompetence at the highest level, bitter personal rivalries among the divisional commanders, and criminal inadequacies of transport, clothing and medical supplies. A scapegoat had to be found if the British Government was to survive, and it was Lord Raglan who bore the brunt of the virulent anti-war campaign mounted by the newspapers. Misunderstood and maligned by his contemporaries, his reputation blackened for posterity, Lord Raglan died a broken man only weeks before the French finally defeated the Russians at Malakoff, with little help from their demoralized British allies. In this fair, scholarly and vividly written account of the confused tragedy of the Crimea, Christopher Hibbert has done much to redeem the reputation of a sensitive and courageous man who simply lacked the necessary qualities of leadership and intellect to extricate his army with honour from an ill-conceived and bloody campaign. Drawing on contemporary letters, papers, reports and diaries, the author strongly suggests that the chaos of the Crimea was the result, not of one man's neglect, but of a whole nation's folly." 2" split at top of gutter between index pages 336/337, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling, light rubbing - mainly on rear panel, two wrinkles in laminate down front cover.

Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1964 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
312 pp, 9 1/2" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "Shocking, tragic, almost unbelievable, is this account of the strange sect and its fanatic leaders who have defied the laws of Canada for over fifty years. (Uses) the records of the RCMP, the courts, and the government, (and) also the statements of the Doukhobors themselves to complete this history of the sect from its origin in Russia to the present day. It is a story of fanatical terrorism let loose in the name of religious freedom; of a Mafia-like organization growing more sophisticated in its criminal activities with each passing year - an organization which has killed twenty-three Canadians, destroyed almost twenty million dollars' worth of property, and warped the lives of successive generations of Doukhobor children." OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY., Hughes, Spike.
18 Hughes, Spike. OUT OF SEASON: A TRAVELLER'S TALE OF A WINTER JOURNEY.
Robert Hale, London, 1956, first edition.
156 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "The term 'out of season' is purely relative, of course. The winter's journey which took Spike Hughes and his wife to Sicily and back, by way of Germany and Austria, was made at a time of year which, so far from being out of season, was at the very height of the seaons for their purpose: the study of famous Italian opera houses in full operatic cry, as it were. In the course of a journey of some 4,000 miles (they) found ma ny things to delight them, not the least important being an atmosphere of leisure and an opportunity to stand and stare which....can be achieved only out of season. So it was that by visiting in winter places which normally thrive as summe r r e s o r t s he found time to learn many things which would 'come in useful' to anybody willing to profit from his experiences and likely to spend holidays in those places at a more conventional time of year. In the end, the difference between v i si ti ng I ta ly i n winter was the difference between being fussed over and spoiled as a guest and being allowed to live one's own life without having to distinguish one day from another. And that, Spike Hughes believes, is the greatest lux ury a ny for m o f t rav el can take." Collins, London, 1948, first edition.
50 pp, 8 15/16" H, hard cover in dust jacket. 4 colour plates, 26 b&w illustrations. "The tale begins in the Middle Ages, when the sick were cared for by the religious orders. Later on, the eighteenth century saw a great movement for providing vo luntary hospitals throughout the country. Then came chloroform, antiseptics and the reforms of Florence Nightingale; and with the twentieth century new achievements, and a bold new plan to weld the different hospitals into a comprehensive s y s t e m . . . .(Mr. Ives') book fills a gap in our social history. It shows clearly that, whatever the changes in administration, the quality of the work done in the hospitals will still depend on the skill and devotion of individuals, as it h a s al wa ys d on e in t he past."
