LETTERS FROM COMPTON DEVERELL., 'BB'. Illustrated by Denys Watkins-Pitchford.
1 'BB'. Illustrated by Denys Watkins-Pitchford. LETTERS FROM COMPTON DEVERELL.
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1950, "First Cheap Edition", with 7s. 6d. price on dust jacket flap.
281 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover (green boards with black lettering on spine) in dust jacket. Green, black & white map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Where is Compton Deverell? It may be anywhere you choose in the English countryside, because ' BB' has drawn a living picture of that sort of delightful old house among fields and woods, the ideal English home which thousands remember from their childhood or hope to have in that future for which they work and plan. The letters are w r i t t e n b y a countryman to a younger friend abroad and they describe the routine of country life throughout the months of the year as it engages an active man with a contemplative mind. They recount the discovery of the small signs of spri ng , th e de li gh t s of summer and long days spent in the open air, and the white beauty of the winter which the townsman hardly knows. Here then is a tranquil book designed for casual reading, calling up the very sights, sounds and smells of th e E ng lis h cou ntr ysi de . It is one of the most intimately observed of 'BB's' books, and one of the most endearing." Minor browning to pages, light browning to edges of textblock, two very small corner bumps. Dust jacket has light edge wear/ wrin kli ng - m ainl y at top /bo tt om o f spine and flap-folds, browning to spine and flap-folds, a few very small closed tears and tiny chips, a 2 1/2" closed tear on front hinge - archivally taped. 2 Bamfield, Veronica. ON THE STRENGTH: THE STORY OF THE BRITISH ARMY WIFE.
London Charles Knight 1974 0853142319 / 9780853142317 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
223 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "British army wives 'on the strength' have campaigned alongside their men since the earliest days of the standing army. They have had to maintain their marriages and some semblance of home life on camps and stations in every quarter of the world, during peace and war. (The author) brings alive for us stories of heroines whose love and loyalty helped resign them to taking second place to the Army in their husband's lives, and enabled them to keep house and bring up children in alien and often dangerous surroundings. She discusses snobberies and superstitions, traditions and taboos, and with wit and humour treats the 'colonels' ladies and Judy O'Gradys' alike. History, anecdote and personal reminiscences are combined in this book, which includes vivid extracts from letters, diaries and memoirs, some of which have not previously been published. Many of the book's illustrations are provided from a unique collection of photographs taken by a pioneer of photography, Henry Wood - Veronica Bamfield's grandfather - in the course of his military career." Very light browning to pages, very small foxing mark in margin of page 87, light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, light browning to top inside edge, light to moderate fading to spine color - lettering still very legible, very small area of surface paper loss and a small ghost sticker mark at bottom of front flap.

Pluto Press, (London, 1978).
206 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), soft cover. B&w photos. "The critics have never treated (London) kindly - his tales were too earthy and ingenuous. His radical political comrades found him an uncomfortable companion - too famous, too wilful and too often given to racist, sexist and elitist opinion. 176 pp, 11 1/4" H. Beautifully illustrated with colour photographs showing the caribou and their environment through the seasons, colour maps. "(T)o most people's view, the country of the caribou is all barren land: harsh, unproductive, devoid of beauty. One of the purposes of these pages is to show that nothing could be further from the truth. The northern wilderness is barren only to those lacking in perception and imagination. But if we should let the great herds vanish from the barren-lands, they will indeed become what the name implies, and we will have lost a part of the majesty and mystery of life." BELOVED EMMA: THE LIFE OF EMMA LADY HAMILTON., Fraser, Flora.
10 Fraser, Flora. BELOVED EMMA: THE LIFE OF EMMA LADY HAMILTON.
Weidenfeld and Nicolson, London, 1986, first edition.
410 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0297788957 Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "(C)harts Emma's life from her birth as the daughter of a Cheshire blacksmith to her death fifty years later in Calais in circumstances of poverty and neglect. (Fraser) deals in particular depth with the Italian period of Emma's life, when - as the wife of Sir William Hamilton, the affable, erudite British Minister at Naples - she became an intimate friend of the Queen of Naples and s at to all the portrait painters of Europe. The licentious climate of Naples provided an easy setting for Emma's famous romance with Lord Nelson: London Society's reaction to the affair is chronicled in fascinating detail. Flora Fraser sheds n e w l i ght on the shifting relationship between Emma, Nelson and Sir William at Paradise Merton, their home in Surrey, and explores Emma's later life - her strange, will-o'-the-wisp existence after the deaths of her husband and her lover. The a ut ho r h as h ad access to private manuscripts and illustrative material in England and Italy, and her extensive use of contemporary sources such as letters and diaries bring the period vividly to life." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dus t jac ket h as li ght edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing - small line indentations on rear panel, two tiny chips, a little dust staining at top of rear flap. Through the detail of the particular lives and places of his native Newfoundland, David Blackwood moves to the universal, to the pivot and that creates great art. 12 Her Royal Highness Princess Christian of Schleswig Holstein, translator & editor. (Frederica Sophie Wilhelmine of Brandenburg-Baireuth.) MEMOIRS OF WILHELMINE, MARGRAVINE OF BAIREUTH.
London David Stott 1887 Hard Cover Good- Inscribed by editor.
458 pp + (1) pp publisher's advertising, 9" H. Tissue-covered sepiatone frontispiece. Inscribed on half title page: "For dearest Louisechen / from her devoted Sister / Helena (underlined with a flourish) / July. 1887. (underlined)". Helena Augusta Victoria was Queen Victoria's 5th child and married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein, becoming Princess Christian. The British Royal family were fond of German diminutives and the 'Louisechen' of the inscription could have been her younger sister, Louise Caroline Alberta, or her Prussian sister-in-law, wife of Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, who was referred to as 'Louisechen' in family papers. The Duke served as Governor General of Canada in 1911 and 'Duchess of Connaught' has been pencilled above 'Louisechen' at some time. An interesting association copy. Dundurn, Toronto, 2008, first edition.

"Recounts a journey that began three-quarters of a century ago in a small village inn nestled in the Laurentian Hills of Quebec. One day, the journey will end at the village cemetery, just one kilometre from the inn. The traveller is the author. The trip is not long, but is rich in rural and natural experiences along the way. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. (He) shares with his readers the evolution of his philosophy through his personal experiences with the people and the wilderness flora and fauna he has encountered on his life's journey." Ottawa Ministry of Environment 1985 0660117908 / 9780660117904 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
Unpaginated, oblong (8 3/4" H x 11 1/4" D). 113 colour photographs, plus three maps. "Beside the Columbia Icefield, in Banff National Park, lies a narrow valley. One end of the valley is a barren arctic waste, newly formed by the retreat of the ice ages. Gradually, it grades into an alpine meadow and then into a northern coniferous forest. The valley and the glaciers around it gell the story of how the landscapes of Canada were formed, from the great ice ages to this summer's flowers. Partway down the valley there is a cave mouth, the sole entrance to an enormous complex of vaults and passage-ways under the valley and glacier. In the cold darkness of the Castleguard caves water has been forming and enlarging passages for hundreds of thousands of years. Glistening white stalactites, among the purest in the world, have been growing for millennia. Come celebrate Castleguard with the adventurers who have explored and photographed the austere beauty of this land shaped by water, cold and time." Contents: Foreword; Castleguard; The Two Landscapes of Castleguard; Populating a New Land; A Succession of Plant Communities; Water Makes Life Possible; The Little Ice Age; Cave Formation: The Surface; Cave Formation: Underground; Return to Light; The Experience; An Overview; Maps; Photographers/Acknowledgements. Toronto Oxford University Press 1987 0195405862 / 9780195405866 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
443 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, maps. The second volume of 'The Selected Journals of L.M. Montgomery' "records a time of great change and upheaval both in Montgomery's life and in society. When she wrote the first entry in this volume she had recently become a world-famous author, having published 'Anne of Green Gables' in 1908. Here we become privy to her response to the death of her grandmother, who had restricted her life severely; her marriage and honeymoon trip to Scotland and England; and her departure from Prince Edward Island to the new restrictions of her life as the wife of a Presbyterian minister in an Ontario village. Montgomery reveals the intensities of friendship, the minutiae of home-making, the joys of motherhood along with the traumas of a disturbed marriage, and records the sources and composition of the 'Anne' series and the emergence of her new heroine 'Emily'. Besides learning about the rewards and trials - including two unpleasant lawsuits - of being a successful author, we see also how a sensitive woman responded to the possibility, the actuality, and the aftermath of a world war. By turns tart and sentimental, sharp-sighted and anxiety-ridden, L.M. Montgomery provides a compelling record of her remarkable life against the background - both social and literary - of a tumultuous period in Canadian history." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling and a few tiny edge tears, light fading to spine color, wrinkling on rear panel.
