2 Clay, Catrine. KING, KAISER, TSAR: THREE ROYAL COUSINS WHO LED THE WORLD TO WAR.
London John Murray 2007 0719565375 / 9780719565373 Soft Cover Very Good
416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

A BUNDLE OF BALLADS., Manning-Sanders, Ruth, compiler. Illustrated by William Stobbs.
3 Manning-Sanders, Ruth, compiler. Illustrated by William Stobbs. A BUNDLE OF BALLADS.
Oxford University Press, London, 1959, first edition.
245 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Black, white & brown illustrations. "...'Come listen to me, you gallants so free - All you that love mirth for to hear...' So the minstrels of the Middle Ages would begin, drawing their listeners about them to hear the tale they have to tell. It might be a rousing adventure of Robin Hood and his bold outlaws, or a ballad of true love; it might be the story of a Demon Lover who lured his lady away by flattery, or True Thomas's adventure in fairyland; it might be the sea ballad of 'Sir Patrick Spens' or the stirring battle story of 'Chevy Chase'. Many splendid ballads, such as these are gathered together here in this richly varied collection. The language has been skilfully modernized to avoid difficulties in reading but without losing any of the original flavour and vitality. Happy or sad, mysterious or romantic, heroic or purely mischievous, with their dancing, singing rhythms the ballads hold an enchantment that still delights and lifts the imagination as it did when they were first sung." Lyrics only, no musical notation. Light to moderate edge rubbing to boards, light wrinkling at bottom of spine, small bump at top corner of boards, faint small watermark at bottom of front board, ink gift inscription/date on title page. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling with small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, fading to spine color - lettering still very legible, two small light waterstains on inside of spine, small creases at top corner of rear flap, minor edge browning. VG-/G

Langley, B.C. Stagecoach Publishing 1976 0889830053 / 9780889830059 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
195 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "The rugged coasts and rivers of British Columbia, Alaska and the Arctic Ocean have exacted a heavy toll of ships and seamen during the past 200 years. During this time, hundreds of vessels and thousands of lives have been lost to storms, uncharted reefs, treacherous currents and primitive navigational aids. Shipwreck, piracy, heroism and infamy; all have played their roles on this stormy stage of sea, ice and river rapid. (The author) covers the more spectacular of these ship disasters from the so-called 'mystery wrecks' to the comical salvage of the poor 'Nanette'. Previous owner's name in ink on front pastedown, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling/rubbing, several small edge tears archivally taped, wrinkling on spine.

FIRST APPROACHES TO THE NORTHWEST COAST., Pethick, Derek.
5 Pethick, Derek. FIRST APPROACHES TO THE NORTHWEST COAST.
Vancouver J.J. Douglas 1976 0888940564 / 9780888940568 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Good-
232 pp, 9 1/4" H. Illustration section on green stock at front of book, map. "An ocean-going ship built of copper-sheathed mahogany. A trans-Siberian expedition that builds gallows every 20 miles. A circumnavigator who starts his working life as an apprentice to a Scottish grocer. Of the marvels and quirks of Europe's 18th-century forays to the northwest coast, few signs remain on Canada's Pacific shores. Yet before 1792, twenty-nine voyages reached land between what is now the California-Oregon border and the Bering Sea. Each of these voyages permanently altered the balance of power among European courts - as well as setting the tone of relations between the native peoples and the 'mau mau'l ney': those who came 'floating on the water without land'. Derek Pethick captures the political significance of each voyage while conveying the important details that make the men, their failures and accomplishments, come alive: for instance, the journal entry showing how the crew of the fated second Bering expedition, marooned on a desolate northern island, still debated whether they might lighten their misery by playing cards or whether this behaviour would be at variance with the tsar's orders." Faint erased pencil marks at top of front free endpaper, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few very small chips, several edge tears with old tape repairs on inside top edge, light rubbing/soiling, small surface paper loss on spine, small light water stain on inside bottom edge.
